The Architecture of Skyscrapers By Francisco Asensio Cerver Arco for Hearst Books International, New York, 1997, pp. 191, $39.95 Many of the greatest new towers are not the tallest By Carter B. Horsley This volume of recent skyscrapers is short on theory, but includes many interesting and important projects with many illustrations by different architectural photographers. The profusely illustrated volume focuses on just 23 high-rise projects, but each is presented with several color photographs as well as site plans and drawings. Perhaps the most fabulous project in the book is the Sea Hawk Hotel and Resort, completed in 1995 in Fukuoka, Japan, and designed by Cesar Pelli. The photographs by Taizo Furukawa, Osamnu Murai, Cesar Pelli and Yukio Yoshimura are spectacular, as is the project, shown below. Pelli here has added a twist, literally, to his famous scheme for the wonderful Wintergarden at the World Financial Center in Lower Manhattan. The Wintergarden is essentially a giant atrium with a telescoping form facing towards the Hudson River. In this project, Pelli has cascaded a similarly scaled atrium along a curve in a far more interesting and dramatic form. This pavilion is the centerpiece for a high-rise tower, clad in ceramic tile, that is a magnificent form that is far superior to his nice, but rather boxy towers at the World Financial Center. Here, Pelli has returned to his sculptural brilliance that first brought him fame with his Blue Whale building at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles.

Skyscrapers
Skyscrapers Higher and Higher by Caroline Mierop in cooperation with Georges Binder and with the participation of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, Norma Editions, Paris, 1995, pp. 223, $65.
By Carter B. Horsley
These two handsome books document the recent burgeoning of major new skyscrapers around the world that are challenging the American skyline.
Mierop's book, which has an introduction by Paul Goldberger, is much more lavish.
Both are sobering eye-openers for many Americans and are indispensable for any serious student of the genre.
The implications are obvious: America has fallen out of love with the skyscraper; the rest of the world has fallen in love with the skyscraper; America can't afford them any longer; the rest of the world can afford them, but the reality is that skyscrapers are among man's most impressive achievements.
"Deemed both avatars and annihilators of civilized life, they have been praised as efficient s[ace savers and denounced as rapacious consumers of light and air. In short, the skyscraper's bold visual gestalt, one layered with multiple meanings, has become a complex metaphor for all that is good and bad about the twentieth century," Dupré writes in her foreword to her book.
In an introductory interview, Philip Johnson, who is represented with several entries, states that "the skyscraper is finished…because there is no economic need for them," adding "It's pride."

How Skyscrapers Work
by Tom Harris Table of Contents Introduction to How Skyscrapers Work Fighting Gravity Giant Girder Grids Making it Functional Wind Resistance Vertical Variations Onward and Upward Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Throughout the history of architecture, there has been a continual quest for height. Thousands of workers toiled on the pyramids of ancient Egypt, the cathedrals of Europe and countless other towers, all striving to create something awe-inspiring. People build skyscrapers primarily because they are convenient you can create a lot of real estate out of a relatively small ground area. But ego and grandeur do sometimes play a significant role in the scope of the construction, just as it did in earlier civilizations. Photo courtesy Wayne Lorentz: The two towers in New York's World Trade Center stood 1,360-feet (415-meters) tall, with a massive steel truss at their core.

See the Economy page for a review of the Russian economy during 2002. The armed conflict in Chechnya continued to cause problems beyond that region, with terrorist acts being carried out in neighbouring regions and as far away as Moscow. These culminated in the tragic events of last October where the armed siege of a Dubrovka theater ended with a tremendous loss of life; although, had the terrorists succeeded in blowing up the building, the number of casualties would have been far higher. The theater recently reopened after an extensive refurbishment and performances of the musical "Nord-Ost" were staged once again.

Reinhart Wolf interviewed by Andy Warhol, New York, April 30, 1980
A.W.: Reinhart, why did you do New York instead of Hollywood? I like Hollywood better.
R.W.: I can understand that, Andy, but you must admit that Hollywood is sort of flat-and I like tops. I really feel that the tops of New York's skyscrapers express the strength and the spirit of America. New York inspires me-the skyscrapers are like phaIlic symbols of fertility. I wanted to capture these buildings before they disappear. Now construction is going on everywhere I look. Many of the buildings I've wanted to photograph have already been demolished.
A.W.: You make New York look so different: all mixed-up.
R.W.: New York is mixed-up! The confusion of styles can even be mad and dynamic! And it is exactly this which demonstrates the creative power of the city. And besides-something is really certain, I think: the people who erected these buildings were all trying for one thing: to defy the stars!

Reinhart Wolf interviewed by Andy Warhol, New York, April 30, 1980
R.W.: And when the morning with the right weather finalIy arrived and my sleepy assistant dropped me off and parked the car leaving me with all those cases and tripods in a totally deserted street, I just prayed I wouldn't get mugged. And then on our difficult journey through revolving doors and into elevators we were always viewed with dark suspicion. People were down-right scared meeting us that early in the morning with what could easily have been the latest thing in machine-guns. But once you conquered all these obstacles and you got into position on the right roof and your picture was there in front of you-in the right distance with the right angle and the right sky,-it gave you such an overwhelming feeling of achievement and success-downright joy! It was like reaching the summit of Mount Everest.
