The trend in hollywood is to use professional stuntmen rather than professional skydivers to perform aerial stunts for movies. Skydiving really is not a stunt in the manner that a car crash or high fall from a building is. Skydiving itself requires years of training and thousands of skydives to become proficient. If a director wanted a snowboarding or a surfing scene the trend is to hire a professional snowboarder or surfer. A good example is the James Bond film "Die Another Day" which featured one of the best surfers in the world, Laird Hamilton, to double for Bond. Often times when a skydiving scene is required a stuntman who happens to skydive is chosen to do the skydiving rather than a competitive skydiver . A professional stuntman is usually very skilled in general stunts but typically does not have the skills that a competition skydiver has honed. A professional skydiver usually trains year round for a competition that is judged on 7-10 jumps. There is no margin for error and the slightest mistake can be the difference between a gold or silver medal. A freefall cinematographer is used to camera flying with expert skydivers and can concentrate on getting the the best aerial shot for the director.
