(510) 981-CITY For Immediate Release Rabid Bat Found In Berkeley Berkeley, California (Wednesday, March 31, 2004) – A bat infected with rabies was recently found in the area of 1900 block of Ninth Street in the City of Berkeley. Although the bat was removed without incident, residents in Berkeley and the surrounding areas are advised that Alameda County has been a “Rabies Area” since 1958. In Berkeley, bats and skunks are the most likely animals to be infected, although unimmunized dogs, foxes, coyotes, badgers, weasels, raccoons and unvaccinated cats can also carry the rabies virus. Rabies infection is virtually always fatal in man so it is critical that people know how to prevent infection: Avoid skunks and bats. Do not handle dead wild animals. Educate your children about the dangers of wild animals and warn them not to touch any animal they do not know.

What a Hunk! It's a Skunk!
Rescue Or Leave Alone? The answer to this question is very simple when it comes to skunks. Leave them alone!
If you feel you have found an injured or orphaned skunk contact a wildlife rehabilitator nearest you, immediately. Rescue! If you are convinced the mother is not going to retrieve her babies, or you've found an injured skunk, you may need to rescue it.
There are three steps to rescue.
First,
Do not touch the skunk.
Skunks are widely known to sometimes carry diseases harmful to humans such as rabies disease Second, Do not feed the skunk or offer it a drink.
Athough this is a noble gesture it may do more harm than good in a rescue effort. The Third Step is the MOST important step! Contact a wildlife rehabilitator nearest you!
The rehabber can help you prepare the injured or orphaned skunk for a proper rescue. To learn more about the rabies disease.

Possum Vital Facts:
Possums require very special diets. Feeding cat food will lead to blindness and metabolic bone disease in these little critters. We recommend an Omnivore Zoo Feed manufactured by Mazuri, which is available through your local feed store - and costs the same (or a bit less) than store brand cat food.

Ferret Vital Facts:
Ferrets are NOT cage animals, and to imprison one is one of the cruelest things one can do to a ferret. Ferrets also require a very special diet, just as we humans do! Cat food will almost guarantee health problems, in addition to a wiry coat. From possum care to wild bird care, you'll find it under the umbrella of Wild Critter Care! Tom coined our site motto, and caring for unwanted, injured and abandoned critters is our humble attempt to have one nobel cause in life.

Striped Skunk ( Mephitis mephitis ) - the "common" skunk of North America, and the one seen at this show as a domesticated pet. Other types of skunks include the Spotted Skunk (a protected fur-bearing game animal in most parts of the country, and as such, not a legal pet) and the Hog-Nosed Skunk (which has a broadened, fleshy, hairless nose, and is not usually considered as attractive as the Striped Skunk). The "classic" basic pattern consists of black or other solid-colored body fur with unbroken white stripes down the back and tail. The terms below describe color and marking variations of the Striped Skunk: Albino - a white skunk with white markings (may still be visible due to different fur shades or lengths) and general lack of any skin/eye pigmentation, resulting in pink eyes and nose. Sometimes found in the wild, usually quite sensitive to light. White with Dark Eyes - a white skunk with white markings, but with normal, eye pigmentation. Frequently mistaken for an albino at first glance, but only normally sensitive to light. Blonde - a skunk with body fur of yellow or orange color, with white markings and dark eyes. Also called Apricot-colored. Comes in many different shades.

Living With Skunks "I never met a skunk I didn't like"
Anonymous
Photo by Art Wolfe Skunks are members of the weasel family (Mustelidae). There are four species of skunk in North America: striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis), hooded skunks (M. macroura), spotted skunks (Spilogale putorius), and scarce hognosed skunks (Conepatus mesoleucus). The striped and spotted skunks are common in San Diego County's rural and urban areas; the striped skunk is larger and more common than the spotted skunk. Although their markings vary, these bushy- tailed creatures are always back and white and absolutely unmistakable. Striped skunks measure 20 to 30 inches long (including the wide, bushy tail) and weigh 6 to 10 pounds (about the size of a house cat) and have two wide, white stripes on their backs that meet on the head. Spotted skunks are about half that size with white spots instead of stripes. Skunks have small heads and eyes, pointed snouts, and short legs that make them seem to waddle. Their strong forefeet and long nails make them excellent diggers. They tend to be slow-moving animals, never in much of a hurry, and are generally poor climbers. A litter of from one to seven young, averaging five, is born from late April to early June.

BellaOnline's Exotic Pets Editor Skunk spray and dogs; there is a simple solution Your child and their pets can be infected with the numerous diseases that wild rats carry. The skunk is part of the natural eco-system that keeps rat populations under control. One of the things people don't like about skunks is when their dogs are sprayed. The odor can be difficult to get rid of. I just hated it when my son and his Golden Retriever went walking in the woods and came back reeking of skunk spray. This method works great.
How to deodorize your child and his dog. I get numerous inquires on what to do when a dog, other pet, or person is sprayed by a skunk. Using tomato juice usually ends up smelling worst. The chemical mixture that makes up skunk spray is rather unique. In fact, one
