What to do if you find a skunk Skunks
Photo by Art Wolfe Skunks are a member of the Mustelidae - the weasel family - and like most of the other members have as their defense the ability to squirt out a strong smelling spray of oily droplets. Their main diet is insects, grubs, beetles, carrion and sometimes fruit and berries. Like many other mammals they have discovered that human beings unwittingly (and usually unwillingly) provide a great variety of foods (cat food, dogfood and table scraps) along with warm snug housing (crawl spaces under hot tubs, decks, houses and basements). When spring arrives along with the brood of cute, bouncing but stinky babies, trouble follows as the calls come in to wildlife rehabilitators and agencies for the removal of the cute but now nuisance animals. The following information may help people deal with some skunk-related problems. Human health and safety - local and state laws Anyone attempting to help an orphaned, sick or injured skunk should be aware of the following facts:

Dogs and cats have been domesticated for centuries. A baby racoon raised as a pet, no matter how cute it is, is still basically a wild animal and will retain some wild animal traits despite your best efforts. It takes an almost saintly patience to keep a racoon as a pet. You should also be aware that many, if not most, states have laws prohibiting the keeping of wild animals as pets. Nevertheless, here are some sites featuring racoons and skunks raised in the company of humans. RACOONS The World Wide Racoon Web . Seth Morabito. A wonderful site for everything racoon related including raising young racoons. The author of this site strongly advises against racoons as pets. The Gable's Racoon World . The author of the site does not advocate racoons as pets.

STRIPED SKUNKS occur throughout Missouri, although they are most common in agricultural and forest edge habitats. Their fur is shiny black with varying amounts of white on the head, back and tail. Adults are about two feet long, including the tail. Spotted skunks occur primarily in southern Missouri, but nowhere are they abundant. They are about one-half the size of striped skunks. A characteristic strong, pungent odor results when skunks spray musk from their scent glands. These shy, secretive animals discharge their scent only when disturbed or harassed. Skunks are nocturnal, and while they do not hibernate, they may be inactive for extended periods during winter. They feed on fruits, berries and insects, often digging cone-shaped holes in lawns to remove grubs. Insect-infested turf may be overturned in large patches. Small mammals, ground-nesting birds and eggs are eaten on occasion. Skunks live in underground dens, usually renovated woodchuck burrows, or in rocky crevasses. In rural and suburban areas skunks may take refuge beneath buildings and in the crawl space under porches. In late winter skunks seek mates and breed. After about 2 months gestation the young are born in the dens, and by summer they join the mother in foraging for food.

Pets. The Wild Kind.
By David Leonhardt Posted on 09.05.04
Just because we moved out to the country a couple years back does NOT mean we want to run a farm. Tending to animals is just not how we want to spend our time. We don't want cows or sheep or chickens. We don't want hogs or ducks. We don't even want a dog or a cat to train.
OK, so my wife says that she wants a cat, but that's only because she knows I won't have anything to do with it. I suspect that if I ever said, "OK, you win. Let's get a cat", she would run screaming down the stairs pulling at her hair and just keep on running...causing damage to the stairway carpet, not to mention the window at the bottom of the staircase.
We don't want a parrot or a rabbit or a hamster or even a mouse.
But when you live in the country, you have pets, whether you like it or not.
The first summer, we were welcomed by Muffet the skunk. Although she never responded to that name, we let her keep it. She just loved our compost heap. In fact, she had a frequent-eater pass at the all-you-can-eat compost buffet.
The second summer we were skunk-free, but this summer we were blessed with a new traveling perfume salesman. We did not name him, but we have determined that he is on a diet. He stays away from the all-you-can-eat compost buffet.

Chicago may be one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, but a surprising number of wildlife populates both the city and the suburbs. Do not try to tame them or make them into pets. Wild animals cannot be domesticated, nor do they want to be. For complete information on how to humanely live with and assist wildlife in your neighborhood, Red Door Animal Shelter recommend two books: Wild Neighbors: The Humane Approach to Living with Wildlife Here is a brief guide to the best ways of dealing with wildlife you might encounter: RABBITS
Usually the mother rabbit only comes at dawn. If you accidentally disturb a rabbit nest, try to reconstruct it as best you can. Usually the nests are hidden under leaves, twigs and debris, or located under shrubs. But sometimes you will find a rabbit nest right in the open. You can move a nest up to 10 feet from its original spot if that will provide more cover for the nest. Cover it over with leaves, twigs and grass clippings. The mother rabbit will find it. It is a myth that rabbits will abandon their babies once human beings have touched them.

The Sweetness of Skunks
by Constance Young
From (Spring 2004) issue of AboutTown guide
Okay, so, like me, your dog has been "skunked." Or perhaps you have had to deal with a dying or sick skunk on your property (which means calling the animal control officer or police because skunks can carry rabies). Still, I insist that skunks are sweet. By learning a little about their personality and anatomy you can avoid skunk-related problems. You might also learn to enjoy and appreciate these appealing creatures. More sweet news about skunks: According to Erica Mills of Aspen Skunk Rabies Research, Inc., skunks are "nature's sanitation engineers." They are an important part of our ecosystem and have a hearty appetite for grubs, insects, mice and baby rats. They also rid the environment of cockroaches, gophers, moles, "road kill," and even poisonous animals such as rattlesnakes and black widow spiders. If you have an insect or rodent problem, a skunk in residence might be just the ticket. First, Know the Facts

Introduction
The striped skunk ( Mephitis mephitis In this report we compare age structure, reproductive rate, and survival rate of populations we studied in 1991 and 1992. For the 1992 population, we compare rates of travel, distances traveled, and home ranges of skunks that died of rabies and healthy skunks. We also describe condition and location of skunks that we found dead or dying, temporal and spatial relations among skunks that died of rabies, evidence of interactions among animals, and skunk responses to feeding sites. Pet skunks are mainly kept in the United States Canada Germany , the Netherlands , and Italy In the United States, pet skunks can be purchased from licensed shelters or breeders with a permit from the U.S. Department of Agriculture 's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service . Baby skunk availability peaks during springtime, immediately following the skunk mating season . Some large fur farms sell surplus skunks to pet stores. Skunks are probably best known for their ability to spray foul-smelling fluid as a defense against predators. Most wild skunks spray only when injured or attacked, as a defense mechanism. The mercaptan -emitting scent glands are usually removed in pet skunks at about four weeks of age.

Both species are nocturnal and crepuscular . The spotted skunk is faster and more agile than the striped skunk and it has a better pelt. For the last 100 years, the Eastern Spotted Skunk was bred for its fine silky fur. The furs and pelts were sold as "Martin Fur." Jerry Dragoo, in a 1997 paper co-authored by Rodney L. Honeycutt of Texas, named the new family classification Mephitidae after mephitis , the Latin word for a foul gas or smell. The spotted skunk weighs between 1 and 3 pounds. It is black with a white spot on the forehead and interrupted white stripes over its back and sides that give the appearance of spots. It is often incorrectly called a " civet cat"—a member of the genet family ( Viverridae ) with a long banded tail similar to a raccoon 's—the two are not closely related.

A. Rabies is an infection of the brain caused by a virus. The disease is usually fatal, but fortunately is rare in humans in the United States. About two human cases per year have occurred in recent years. Nearly 1,000 cases of rabies are reported annually in domestic animals while more than 5,000 cases of rabies are reported in wild animals. Rabies appears to come in cycles; peak years reporting more than five times the cases of an average year. This makes it even more important that domestic animals be vaccinated annually. Q. How is rabies transmitted?
A. Rabies is usually transmitted from the bite of an infected animal. Transmission is also possible by contamination with infectious saliva through a break in the skin. Occasionally, farmers and veterinarians are exposed while treating cattle and horses.
Foxes, raccoons and skunks are more likely to be infected with the virus.

BOBCAT
Many people are unaware that the wild bobcat is native to Ohio. Not only is it native but it presently exists, though in very small numbers, in mostly southern regions of this state. It is quite sad to have one of our own native species, so endangered, that it has never even been seen by most. Another of our endangered species, the bobcat has succumbed to the same fate caused by deforestation as many of our other wild inhabitants, be it bird, reptile, amphibian, mammal, insect and even plant. Bobcats require large, unbroken tracts of forest encompassing hundreds of acres, for hunting and breeding territories. It's the same old story, but a real one - those forests are gone. Our bobcat was released into the wild by her former owners, with all four of her feet declawed! And she was released in a part of Ohio where no bobcats live. She had discovered some domestic geese on a farm and was able to capture and kill a few, before being discovered by the farmer. A concerned rehabber convinced him to let them live trap her and she now will live the rest of her life out at "BACK TO THE WILD". In captivity, she could live 30 years! She is doing very well here on a diet of raw turkey, chicken, some beef, rodents and rabbits or squirrels that have died from their injuries. She would not do well on commercial cat food and in fact refuses to eat it. She is quite small for a wild cat, weighing only 22 lbs., which is average for her species. Her cage requirements are a lot of room, staggered shelves at different heights, hollow logs and open areas to bask in as well as cool, shaded areas. We have planted lots of tall grasses and bamboo in her pen and she enjoys jumping and hiding in them. Visitors sometimes can hear her purring loudly, as she checks them out through the wire - but if they could only see her at feeding time - she is a wild animal and always will be!

Recently Reported Rabies in Illinois
Dr. Julia Whittington, Wildlife Extension Veterinarian, University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine The three recent cases of rabies in domestic animalsa horse and a cow in northern Illinois and another horse in southern Illinoisremind us of the very real and present danger that is harbored in some of our native wild animals. Rabies is an almost always fatal disease caused by an RNA virus in the family Rhabdoviridae. Any warm-blooded mammal can contract rabies, including domestic animals and humans. Several terrestrial wild animals in the United States are known reservoirs (or potential carriers) of the disease: foxes, skunks, coyotes, and raccoons. Additionally, several species of bats also serve as reservoirs for rabies virus. Historically, rabies in wild animals has been most frequently reported in raccoons. These cases have been confined geographically to the east coast of the United States and have not been reported in Illinois to date. Skunks are the second most frequently reported wild species to carry rabies, followed by bats, foxes, and other wild mammals. It is generally accepted that the most common wild reservoirs for rabies in Illinois are bats and skunks. In 2004 fifty-one animals tested by the state were positive for rabies, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health: 50 bats and one horse.

Skunk lover says law stinks
New rule forbids importing animals from other states, but Alabama lacks breeders.

To be loved by a skunk is to be truly loved. So says Beckie Mills, a Hazel Green woman who has been raising and adoring domesticated, descented skunks for the past 15 years. As president of the Alabama Skunks as Pets organization, she preaches the joy of skunk-rearing. ''They're just so sweet, cuddly and loyal,'' Mills said, feeding her smoke-colored skunk named Myrrh vanilla wafers and dried cranberries from her hand. ''They like to sleep all curled up around your neck. ''And they're entertaining. Watching them slide across the floor and play is better than a movie.'' But the problem is, a fairly new regulation imposed by the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries restricts the sale or importation of skunks from other states. Mills said Alabama has no licensed domesticated skunk breeders. If Alabamians want skunks as pets, they are pretty much out of luck. ''And you certainly don't want to capture one from the wild to raise it,'' Mills said. ''Wild skunks carry diseases.''
