Originally Published in Litteratura Serpentium (March) 24(1):33-47. ABSTRACT Following are some new techniques trailed with success to assist in feeding smaller snakes and those prone to regurgitation. This is not a paper detailing the generalities of snake feeding in captivity, including such essential elements of caging like the need for a basking spot, temperature gradient, need for clean drinking water at all time, privacy for the snake digesting food and so on. INTRODUCTION In 2003, I had a reovirus attack my collection of snakes (Hoser, 2003a). Among the numerous symptoms of this was a reduced ability to digest food. As a result of this and a general push to reduce regurgitation risks in general, especially with smaller and younger snakes a number of innovations were tested with success. Some are given in this paper, so that other keepers may take advantage of these newly developed techniques. DIFFICULTY IN DIGESTING FOOD In terms of ease and difficulty to digest food, the general trend is as follows in terms of difficult to digest and then easier at bottom.

Blue-tongued Lizard
Classification, Identification
Distribution
Parasites and Predators
Reptile ticks are commonly found on blue-tongues; they attach under the scales and in the ear canal. In the bush the major predators of blue-tongues are large predatory birds (such as Brown Falcons and Laughing Kookaburras) and large snakes (including the Eastern Brown Snake, Red-bellied Black Snake and Mulga Snake). Feral cats and dogs also eat blue-tongues.
Reproduction, Growth and Life Span
Blue-tongues live alone for most of the year, but between September and November (in Australia) males pursue females and mating occurs. At this time, males may fight aggressively among themselves. Mating may be rough, with females carrying scrape marks from the male's teeth. Female blue-tongues give birth three to five months after mating, between December and April. At birth, the young eat the placental membranes, and within a few days shed their skin for the first time. The young are ready to look after themselves straight after birth, and disperse within a few days. Eastern Blue-tongues probably become adults at about three years of age when they have a total length of about 16”. Blue-tongues are long-lived. Several captive animals have lived for 20 years.
Blue-tongues in suburbia
When threatened, a Funnel web rocks back on its hind legs and lets venom drip down its fangs. A dog raises its hackles, growls and bears its teeth. The Blue-Tongue shows it has a big blue tongue.

A PLANT growing high on Mount Wellington in Tasmania has come to depend on lizards to expose its reproductive organs. This is the first time animals have been found to play this role in plant reproduction, say Mats Olsson and Rick Shine of the University of Sydney. Snow skink lizards rip open the fused petals of honey bush flowers to get at the nectar snack inside. The weather is usually cold and windy. But since the lizards only forage when it's warm, the flowers are opened when insect pollinators are likely to be about. And while the flowers can self-pollinate, only those opened by lizards release seeds ( Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , vol 71, p 191).

LIZARDS OF THE WET TROPICS
Northern Red-throated Skink, Carlia rubrigularis
DISTRIBUTION:
North-eastern Queensland, from Cooktown south to Townsville.
HABITAT:
Rainforest and wet sclerophyll forests and their margins, especially edge habitats beside tracks, clearings and streams.
DESCRIPTION (from Cogger, 1992; Wilson and Knowles, 1988):
A smallish dark grey brown skink, adults with a rich red flush to the sides of the neck. The dorsal surface features numerous scattered darker and paler flecks. Sometimes there is a narrow pale dorso-lateral stripe that commences over the eye and extends to the tail in females. This strip is absent or present only anteriorly in adult males. The flanks are darker and are finely speckled with black and pale brown. Sometimes there is a pale mid-lateral stripe present. The head is paler than the body, usually a rich bronze-brown. The ventral surface is whitish. The lower eyelid features a transparent disc, roughly equal in size to the ear opening. SVL = 50mm.
BREEDING:
Oviparous - mating has been observed in September, though males are in reproductive condition year-round. Females are generally gravid from September to April although they may also be reproductively active year round. One or two eggs are laid, sometimes communally.

The Lizards of Missouri
by Tom R. Johnson
Missouri's 13 species of lizards are interesting, colorful and beneficial. They should not be feared and need our protection.
Missouri is home to 13 kinds of lizards. All lizards native to the Show-Me-State are harmless and non-venomous. Like other reptiles, lizards are ecdothermic or "cold-blooded." They are closely related to snakes, and some even look and "act" just like snakes. Most Missouri lizards are long, slender reptiles with scales, a long tail and four legs with claws on their toes. They are different from snakes because they have legs, ear openings and eyelids. However, as with other animals, there are exceptions: The western slender glass lizard, which lives in many Missouri counties, is legless, but has eyelids and ear openings, which snakes lack.
Habitats
Our lizards live in three types of habitats: forests, glades and prairies. Those living in forests use clearings, where they bask in the sun on fallen logs. Glade species bask in the sun on rocks, as well as take shelter under them at night. Prairie lizards have no problem finding places to bask, but they take shelter in animal burrows or under dead grass.
Lizard Skin
Missouri's lizards all have scales and a tough outer skin. Just like snakes, lizards must shed their skin so they can grow. A lizard's outer skin normally comes off in large pieces three or four times during the summer.

Lizards
Lizards
Lizards belong to the group of animals known as reptiles. This group includes crocodiles, turtles, snakes, tuatara and lizards. There are many different types of lizards in the world, but in New Zealand we only have geckos and skinks.
Lizard facts
  • There are over 80 different species of lizard in New Zealand. They are found from sea level to over 2000 m. The Maori name for lizard is ngarara (or karara in the southern dialect). Some lizards are active at night (nocturnal) while others only come out at day (diurnal). The oldest known gecko living in the wild is at least 42 years old. It lives on an island off the North Canterbury coastline. One New Zealand skink lays eggs, but all others give birth to fully-formed young. The major threats to lizards are introduced predators and habitat loss. Lizards are eaten by cats, ferrets, stoats, weasels, hedgehogs, rats, mice, and even some birds like magpies, kingfishers and blackbirds. Although the tuatara looks like a lizard, it is actually the last remaining member of an ancient group of reptiles -

The Otago skink and grand skink are two of New Zealand's most impressive lizards, and grow as long as 300mm. They are unique to Otago, and are two of New Zealand's rarest reptiles. Grand skinks are black with yellowish flecks, while Otago skinks are black with grey, green, or yellowish blotches. These colour patterns provide fantastic camouflage amid the lichen-covered rocks they inhabit. Once widespread in Central Otago, these skinks are now found in only 8% of their former range. They are regarded as 'vulnerable,' and carry a 'Category A' priority for conservation action. A Department of Conservation Recovery Plan has been underway since 1995, and is now under review.
Ecology and habitat
Grand skinks are smaller then Otago skinks, but they are often considered together because they share similar
