In 1991 Professor Johan Moan of the Norwegian Cancer Institute made an astounding discovery. He found that the yearly incidence of melanoma in Norway had increased by 350% for men and by 440% for women during the period 1957 to 1984. He also determined that there had been no change in the ozone layer over this period of time. He concludes his report in the British Journal of Cancer by stating "Ozone depletion is not the cause of the increase in skin cancers"(1). SKIN CANCER There are three major forms of skin cancer. BASAL CELL CARCINOMA is the most common form of skin cancer. It occurs most frequently in men who spend a great deal of time outdoors and primarily produces lesions on the head and neck(2). Basal cell carcinoma rarely spreads throughout the body but can invade neighbouring bone and nerves(3). SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA is the second most common skin cancer. It primarily affects people who sunburn easily, tan poorly, and have blue eyes and red or blonde hair. Squamous cell carcinoma most commonly develops from actinic keratoses and can metastasize if left untreated. Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip is 12 times more common among men than among women(4).

and Vitamin D
Introduction For the past several decades the numbers of skin cancers, and particularly the deadly one, malignant melanoma, have risen dramatically among Caucasian populations throughout the world. In the USA melanoma is the seventh most commonly diagnosed cancer with a rate of 14.2 cases per 100,000 population, while in 1987 Queensland, Australia, had 55.8 cases per 100,000, the world's highest rate. The incidence of the various types of skin cancer in the general British population has been increasing at an annual rate of two to eight percent over the past 2 decades. The contributory factors seem to be a light-skinned, northern European population living in areas of high ambient sunlight, and the incidence of the disease is seasonal, with more cases reported in summer than winter. Yet several clinical and epidemiological aspects of cutaneous melanoma seem anomalous because they contrast with other sunlight-associated skin cancers. For example, persons with the greatest risk of melanoma are not those with the greatest cumulative solar exposure; the anatomic areas that receive the most solar exposure are not preferentially affected; and not all light-skinned people suffer the same - albino Africans who have no pigmentation, are more likely to get sunburn and a number of other skin complaints as a result of exposure to the sun, but they don't get melanomas.

Clinton skin cancer highly curable
Basal cell carcinoma different from deadly melanoma
(CNN) - The type of skin cancer that struck President Bill Clinton is one of the most common - and most curable - forms of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma accounts for about 75 percent of all skin cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. But unlike melanoma, the deadly skin cancer that struck Senator John McCain last year, basal cell carcinoma rarely spreads into other parts of the body and rarely causes death. The disease begins in the epidermis, the top layer of skin, usually on the neck and head - areas that are most exposed to the sun. Lesions may look like flat, scaly red areas or shiny raised areas. Melanomas, on the other hand, are often brown or black and look like moles. RESOURCES What does skin cancer look like?

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Women with common, usually nonfatal forms of skin cancer face double the risk of having unrelated cancers, according to a large study, suggesting that the initial diagnosis may be more worrisome than previously thought. The skin cancer link was found for several malignancies, including cancer of the brain, breasts, lung, liver, ovaries and uterus. Previous studies have shown that men and women with skin cancer face an increased risk of skin cancer returning. Some studies also have found that people with non-melanoma skin cancer are prone to later developing non-skin cancers. But according to the new report's lead author, Dr. Carol Rosenberg of Evanston-Northwestern Healthcare, part of Northwestern University's medical school, the earlier research did not adequately consider other risk factors that might explain the connection.

Posted on Wednesday, May 26 @ 08:42:07 CDT by bjs It's well known that drinking red wine in moderation can have some health benefits, mainly attributed to a compound called resveratrol. Now, scientists at the University of Virginia Health System have discovered how. They found how resveratrol helps to starve cancer cells by inhibiting the action of a key protein that feeds them. The protein, called nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-kB), is found in the nucleus of all cells and activates genes responsible for cell survival. ''We used physiologically-relevant doses of resveratrol and found dramatic effects on human cancer cells,'' said Marty Mayo, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics at U.Va.
