Download this Patient Note in PDF format VOL 107 / NO 7 / JUNE 2000 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE Skin cancer is a major risk for sun worshippers and is definitely on the rise in the United States. In fact, one of every five Americans will have skin cancer at some time during his or her life. The good news is that this type of cancer can almost always be curedprovided it is found early. Unfortunately, the incidence of melanoma, the most deadly type of skin cancer, is increasing faster than that of any other cancer. Types of skin cancer
The three major types of skin cancers are called basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. The basal cell and squamous cell types most often occur on areas of the skin that are regularly exposed to the sun, such as the face, the back of the hands, and the ears. People who spend many hours in the sun, such as landscape workers, farmers, and construction or highway crews, tend to be at the greatest risk for these cancers. Melanoma, on the other hand, tends to occur on areas of the body not exposed to the sun on a regular basis. This type of cancer is more common in people who work indoors and have limited but sometimes intense exposure to the sun on weekends or during vacations. Children whose unprotected skin is exposed to the sun a lot during the first 15 years of their lives are also at increased risk of melanoma as adults. What are the signs?

124. ASOPRS Eyelid Skin Cancer
The purpose of ASOPRS is to advance education, research and the quality of clinicalpractice in the fields of aesthetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery
http://www.asoprs.org/eyelidskincancer.htm
Eyelid Skin Cancer...
Skin cancer often involves the skin of the eyelid or adjacent face. Eyelid skin cancers occur most often on the lower eyelid, but may be found anywhere on the eyelid margins, corners of the eye, eyebrow skin, or adjacent areas of the face. Usually, they appear as painless elevations or nodules. Occasionally, the eyelashes are distorted or missing. There may be ulcerations of the involved area, along with bleeding, crusting, and/or distortion of the normal skin structure. Such findings need to be evaluated and may require a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis of skin cancer. Causes of Skin Cancer Excessive exposure to sunlight is the single most important factor associated with skin cancers on the face, eyelids, and arms. Fair-skinned people develop skin cancers far more frequently than dark-skinned people. Skin cancers may also be hereditary. Types of Skin Cancer The most common types of skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Both types enlarge locally and usually do not spread (metastasize) to distant parts of the body. However, with time, if not completely removed, either type will invade adjacent structures. It is important to know that basal and squamous cell carcinomas are relatively slow growing. Thus, when detected early and treated in a prompt and appropriate manner, there is a better chance of removing the tumor completely and minimizing the amount of tissue affected by the carcinoma. Sebaceous gland carcinoma and malignant melanoma are more serious forms of skin cancer because they may spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. These types of skin cancer require prompt, aggressive treatment because of the threat of early spread.

What is skin cancer?
Cancer is a disease in which certain body cells don't function right, divide very fast, and produce too much tissue that forms a tumor. The skin is the body's largest organ. It protects us against heat, light, injury, and infection. It regulates body temperature and stores water, fat, and vitamin D. The two most common kinds of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The most serious kind of skin cancer is called melanoma.
Why should I be concerned about skin cancer?
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. The number of new cases of skin cancer appears to be rising each year. The number of deaths due to skin cancer, though, is fairly small. The good news is that skin cancer is now almost 100% curable if found early and treated promptly. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. Artificial sources of UV radiation, such as sunlamps and tanning booths, can also cause skin cancer. Although anyone can get skin cancer, the risk is greatest for people who have fair skin that freckles easily often those with red or blond hair and blue or light-colored eyes. Most skin cancers appear after age 50, but the sun's damaging effects begin at an early age. So, protection should start in childhood to prevent skin cancer later in life.

There are two main types of skin cancer; malignant melanoma (cancer in moles), and the non-melanoma group (basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma).
Each year approximately 1 in every 10,000 people in the UK will develop a new case of malignant melanoma. It accounts for about 1500 deaths annually in the UK.
Sun radiation
is a contributing factor in 90 per cent of all cases of skin cancer.
People of all ages can get skin cancer, but it is rarely seen in children. People who are exposed to large quantities of sun radiation can develop skin cancer as early as 20-30 years of age, but the disease is much more common in elderly people.
Symptoms and treatment depend on what type of cancer it is. The female to male ratio is 2:1, and it is most commonly seen (50 per cent) on the lower leg.

Subject: Middle-Latitude Ozone Depletion Increases Health Risks /* Written 8:40 AM Dec 21, 1995 by nsundt in climate.news */
Middle-latitude Ozone Depletion Increases Health Risks
According to the National Cancer Institute, between 1973 and 1992 the incidence of melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer, increased faster than any other cancer among caucasians in the US. Now accounting for 3% of cancers diagnosed nationwide, the American Academy of Dermatology calls melanoma "an undeclared epidemic." This alarming trend may persist or even accelerate for at least one reason: stratospheric ozone is being depleted, allowing additional damaging ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation to penetrate into the lower atmosphere. UV-B radiation increases the risk not just of melanoma, but also of non-melanoma skin cancers, eye disease and infectious diseases. According to the latest Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion issued by the United Nations and the US Government, human-influenced ozone-depletion may peak around 1998 and will persist well into the 21st century. For the US and other mid- latitude countries of the Northern hemisphere, ozone losses during summer and fall months may peak at 6-7% relative to ozone concentrations in the 1960s. Winter/spring depletion could peak at nearly twice those levels. Other factors remaining constant (not necessarily the case), such losses would result in comparable percentage increases in UV-B radiation. As the level of radiation increases, health problems may increase even more rapidly. Some evidence suggests, for example, that increases in UV-B exposure can cause disproportionately large increases in non-melanoma skin cancer.

Past Highlights How To Do a Skin Self-Exam You can improve your chances of finding skin cancer promptly by performing a simple skin self-exam regularly. The best time to do this self-exam is after a shower or bath. You should check your skin in a well-lighted room using a full-length mirror and a hand-held mirror. It's best to begin by learning where your birthmarks, moles, and blemishes are and what they usually look like. Check for anything new a change in the size, texture, or color of a mole, or a sore that does not heal. Check all areas, including the back, the scalp, between the buttocks, and the genital area.

Welcome to the Dermatology and Skin Surgery Center of Princeton Our Specialties Include: Mohs Surgery : In our Mohs Surgery Unit we treat basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas and some more unusual skin tumors, including some early melanomas. Malignant melanoma or a "cancerous mole" is a rare type of skin cancer that usually appears as a dark colored spot or bump on your skin and slowly enlarges. Although the official name for the procedure is Mohs micrographic surgery, we prefer the shortened version of Mohs surgery. The surgery is performed as follows: the skin that is suspicious for cancer is treated with a local anesthetic so there is no pain in the area. To remove most of the visible skin cancer, the tumor is scraped using a sharp instrument called a curette. A thin piece of tissue is then removed surgically around the scraped skin and carefully divided into pieces that will fit on a microscope slide. The edges are marked with colored dyes; a careful map or diagram of the removed tissue is made; and the tissue is frozen by the technician. At the end of Mohs surgery, you will be left with a surgical wound. This wound will be dealt with in one of several ways. The several options will be discussed with you in order to provide the best possible cosmetic results without disguising the small possibility of a recurrence.
