Facts About Skin Cancer Facts about skin cancer:
According to the latest statistics available from the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
  • Cancer of the skin is the most common of all cancers in the United States. More than 1 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed in the US each year. Melanoma represents only 4 percent of all skin cancers in the US, but accounts for more than 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths. Although exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays is said to be the most important factor in the cause of skin cancers, about 70 percent of American adults do not use sun-protection measures. Most skin cancers appear after age 50, but skin damage from the sun begins at an early age. Therefore, protection should start in childhood to prevent skin cancer later in life.

Skin Cancer: Saving Your Skin From Sun Damage
Printer-friendly version Email this article
Why is the sun so bad for my skin?
The sun's rays, which are called ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays (UVA and UVB rays) damage your skin. This leads to early wrinkles, skin cancer and other skin problems. Being in the sun often over time, even if you don't burn, can lead to skin cancer. A tan is the body's desperate attempt to protect itself from the sun's harmful rays. Return to top
Are tanning booths safer?
No. Tanning booths use ultraviolet rays. Makers of the booths may claim that they use "harmless" UVA rays. But both UVA and UVB rays cause skin damage. While UVA rays take longer than UVB rays to damage the skin, they go deeper into the skin than UVB rays. Return to top

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota found incidence of the two most common forms of non-melanoma skin cancers rose between 1976-9 to 2000-3. Researchers blamed the rise on depletion of the ozone layer, increased exposure to the sun and tanning beds, and improved methods of detection. Cancer experts said rises had also been seen in the UK. More than 60,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with non-melanoma each year, making it the most common cause of cancer. The most effective way for people to reduce skin cancer risk is to protect their skin from burning in the sun
Sara Hiom, Cancer Research UK But non-melanoma is usually slow growing and easily treatable - it kills just 500 people a year, compared to the 1,700 deaths caused by the much rarer melanoma skin cancer. The US study of 485 patients aged under 40 looked at two of the most common types of non-melanoma - basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Skin cancers are the most common type of cancer in white populations, both in the UK and worldwide.
Most are easy to treat and pose only a small threat to life. But one type, melanoma, is difficult to treat unless detected early. There are about 7,000 cases of melanoma a year, compared with approximately 100,000 cases of non malignant skin cancer. But three quarters of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma. Melanoma is related to the common mole and changes in the appearance of moles should alert suspicion. It is important to seek medical attention quickly because malignant melanoma tends to spread much more rapidly through the bloodstream than the other two types of skin cancer. If an adult has a growing, changing, brown or black mark which cannot be covered by the blunt end of a pencil, this should be shown to the doctor without too much delay. Dr Charlotte Proby, a consultant dermatologist for Cancer Research UK, said: "Skin cancers are caused by over-exposure to the sun and particularly to episodes of sunburn.

Dermatologists are urging people across the country to get a free skin cancer screening. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 1 million cases are diagnosed each year. With early detection and proper treatment, skin cancer is highly curable. The average cure rate when detected and treated in the early stages is 95%. Even melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, has a high cure rate with early detection and treatment.
In addition to being screened for skin cancer, you can learn how to examine your own skin for early warning signs. Skin self-examinations consist of regularly looking over your entire body, including your back, scalp, soles of feet, between your toes, and on the palms of your hands. To do a thorough exam, it is important to use both full-length and hand-held mirrors so that it is possible to see the back of your head, back, and buttocks.
These screenings are offered through the American Academy of Dermatology’s (Academy) National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Screening program, which is now in its 21

90. What Is Skin Cancer?
skin cancer continues to increase. This site from the American Academy ofDermatology explains what skin cancer is, what can be done to reduce the risk,
http://www.skincarephysicians.com/skincancernet/whatis.html
What is Skin Cancer?
Cancer develops when DNA, the molecule found in cells that encodes genetic information, becomes damaged and the body cannot repair the damage. These damaged cells begin to grow and divide uncontrollably. When this occurs in the skin, skin cancer develops. As the damaged cells multiply, they form a tumor. Since skin cancer generally develops in the epidermis, the outermost layers of skin, a tumor is usually clearly visible. This makes most skin cancers detectable in the early stages.
Types of Skin Cancer
Three types of skin cancer account for nearly 100% of all diagnosed cases. Each of these three cancers begins in a different type of cell within the skin, and each cancer is named for the type of cell in which it begins. Skin cancers are divided into one of two classes - nonmelanoma skin cancers and melanoma. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer.
The different types of skin cancer are:
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC):
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC):
About 16% of diagnosed skin cancers are SCC. This cancer begins in the squamous cells, which are found in the upper layer of the epidermis. About 200,000 cases are diagnosed ever year. SCC tends to develop in fair-skinned middle-aged and elderly people who have had long-term sun exposure. It most often appears as a crusted or scaly area of skin with a red inflamed base that resembles a growing tumor, non-healing ulcer, or crusted-over patch of skin. While most commonly found on sun-exposed areas of the body, it can develop anywhere, including the inside of the mouth and the genitalia. SCC may arise from actinic keratoses, which are dry, scaly lesions that may be skin-colored, reddish-brown or yellowish-black. SCC requires early treatment to prevent metastasis (spreading).

Protect Your Skin From Disorders Like Acne and Cancer
The largest organ in the body, the skin is the first line of defense against dirt, germs and other foreign objects. Unfortunately, it is also most affected by sun damage.
Most skin disorders, such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis, display symptoms on the surface of the skin. Treatment for non-cancerous disorders aims to curb the progress of the disorder or prevent further breakouts. The goal of cancer treatment is cure. About Skin Conditions Skin disorders number in the hundreds. Caused by infection, sun exposure, allergies, and even genetics they can cause physical discomfort and lead to depression and a lack of self-confidence. About Acne Acne is the most common, recognizable skin condition. Severe acne that is left untreated may leave scars. No cure for acne is available so dermatologists concentrate on controlling outbreaks. About Eczema Eczema causes skin inflammation, rashes and itching. Although what causes eczema is not known, immune system problems may be to blame. While no cure is available, treatment helps prevent breakouts.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. According to current estimates, forty to fifty percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. Although anyone can get skin cancer, the risk is if you have fair skin that freckles easily often with red or blond hair and blue or light-colored eyes. The two most common kinds of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. (Carcinoma is cancer that begins in the cells that cover or line an organ.) Basal cell carcinoma accounts for more than ninety percent of all skin cancers in the United States. It is a slow-growing cancer that seldom spreads to other parts of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma also rarely spreads, but it does so more often than basal cell carcinoma. However, it is important that skin cancers be found and treated early because they can invade and destroy nearby tissue. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are sometimes called non-melanoma skin cancer. Another type of cancer that occurs in the skin is

Actinic keratosis
- A sun-caused, scaly growth. The actinic keratosis is a precancer that may become a squamous-cell skin cancer (carcinoma). Scientific studies say that between 1% and 20% of actinic keratoses may turn into squamous-cell skin cancer. It is usually found on sun-exposed skin. It is usually composed of a dry white scale on a pink or brown mat of tissue, usually about half the size of a dime. The actinic keratosis is a growth or tumor and is, by definition, one that stays high up in the skin and has not had a chance to go into the body.
Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) - A naturally occurring chemical in the human body that is converted to protoporphryn IX, especially in actively growing cells (usually a sign of disorder like precancer or cancer). Certain wavelengths of light cause protoporphryn to absorb light energy, killing cells in which protoporphryn is present in excess. This is the basis for photodynamic therapy, a treatment that will almost certainly be used successfully for precancers in the not-too-distant future Appendages - When used in dermatology, usually refers to parts of the epidermis and include the hair, nails and sweat glands (eccrine cooling sweat glands, apocrine arm/groin sweat/smelly glands).
