Cancer Diseases or Create Your Own Manage Alerts What Is This? CHICAGO, Illinois (Reuters) The incidence of two types of skin cancer has nearly tripled among women under age 40, a sign that tanning is still popular among the young despite warnings about the harm it can cause, researchers said Tuesday. The rate of basal cell and squamous cell cancers rose to 32 per 100,000 women under 40 in 2003 from 13 per 100,000 in the late 1970s, their study said. Basal cell and squamous cell cancers are the two most common forms of the disease and can be removed and treated more easily than the deadlier melanoma type. "Tan is still accepted as a sign of health and a sign of beauty and so changing that message is going to be important to accept fair skin as very healthy and beautiful," said study author Dr. Leslie Christenson of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The study looked at some 500 skin cancer cases in surrounding Olmsted County, Minnesota, where the population's comprehensive health records are examined as part of the clinic's Rochester Epidemiology Project.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) The compound that makes curry yellow could help fight skin cancer, U.S. researchers reported Monday. They said curcumin, found in the spice turmeric, interferes with melanoma cells. Tests in laboratory dishes show that curcumin made melanoma skin cancer cells more likely to self-destruct in a process known as apoptosis. The same team has found that curcumin helped stop the spread of breast cancer tumor cells to the lungs of mice. Bharat Aggarwal of the Department of Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and colleagues treated three batches of melanoma cells, known as cell lines, with curcumin at different doses and for varying times. The curcumin suppressed two proteins that tumor cells use to keep themselves immortal, the researchers write in next month's issue of the journal Cancer.

    INTRODUCTION
Skin cancers are a rapidly growing portion of all cancers diagnosed each year. It is believed that increased sun exposure and a decreased ozone layer are a major cause of this phenomenon. This guide is designed to show you the common "warning" signs of skin cancer and to show pictures of cancer and pre-cancerous skin abnormalities. It is also designed to teach you how to avoid these cancers. The beautiful thing about skin cancer is that most are preventable, and those diagnosed early are usually curable. Unfortunately, those cancers not diagnosed early (especially melanoma) may be fatal! The key to skin cancer control is prevention, followed by early diagnosis. Please consider filling out our anonymous survey once you have completed this guide. Keep in mind that this guide is NOT a substitute for seeing your physician if you have a skin or health problem about which you're concerned. Because skin cancers are potentially deadly, there is no substitute for letting your doctor check out your skin on a regular basis. An undiagnosed or unrecognized skin cancer could kill you! One good rule-of-thumb is any growth or rash that has not healed after 3 weeks, or any changing or growing mole rash, should be evaluated by a doctor.

The treatment is called photodynamic therapy and uses skin cream and concentrated light to activate the cream, which kills cancer cells. It is used in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, but a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee last year recommended against U.S. approval. Basal cell skin cancer, often caused by overexposure to sunlight, is diagnosed in about 2 million people worldwide each year, making it among the most common cancers. It is also among the most curable. Surgical removal is generally the preferred treatment, but since basal cell cancers typically appear on or around the face, some patients worry about scarring. The new study, published in Monday's Archives of Dermatology, involved 101 patients who received either surgery or two treatment sessions a week apart with Metvix, also known as methyl aminolevulinate cream.

    Introduction
Each year, about a million people in the United States learn that they have skin cancer . This National Cancer Institute (NCI) booklet will give you some important information about this disease. It explains how skin cancer is diagnosed and treated and has information about preventing this disease. Words that may be new to readers appear in italics . Definitions of these words and other terms related to skin cancer can be found in the Dictionary . For some words, a "sounds-like" spelling is also given. Other NCI booklets are listed in the Other Booklets section. Our materials cannot answer every question you may have about skin cancer. They cannot take the place of talks with doctors, nurses, and other members of the health care team. We hope our information will help with those talks. Research has led to better methods of diagnosing and treating this disease. It is encouraging to know that skin cancer is now almost 100 percent curable if found early and treated promptly.

CHICAGO (Reuters) Drinking four or more cups of green tea a day may help stave off skin cancer and the substance could be similarly effective if incorporated into skin care creams, researchers said Monday. The brew, which is especially popular in Asia, where cancer is rarer than in the West, contains antioxidants that are known to prevent skin cancer in mice and may prevent it in humans, a report summarizing recent research into green tea said.

Thwarting Skin Cancer with Sun Sense
by Carolyn J. Strange "This looks like skin cancer," the dermatologist told the woman as he examined the spot on her leg. Later, after removing the tumor and several other precancerous growths from her face and hands, he looked her in the eyes and said, "You've had enough sun." More and more people are hearing similar messages from their doctors. Viewed as an undeclared epidemic by dermatologists, skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers, and it's increasingly common. About a million Americans will develop skin cancer this year. "Skin cancer is now about as common as all other cancers combined," says Martin A. Weinstock, M.D., Ph.D., director of Brown University's Dermatoepidemiology Unit and Chief of Dermatology at the Providence (R.I.) Veterans Affairs Medical Center. And there's no evidence that the epidemic has peaked. But there is a bright side. Skin cancer is quite curable when treated early. More than 90 percent of skin cancers are completely cured. Even better, it's largely preventable, simply by avoiding sun and sunlamp exposure. As more consumers become sun smart, they're finding new ways to protect themselves. For example, FDA has cleared for marketing one manufacturer's clothing for sun protection. Eating a healthier diet can't hurtless fat, more fruits, vegetables and grainsand preliminary studies indicate it may help. And the National Weather Service provides a measure of ultraviolet (UV) exposure with its UV Index, which is part of the daily weather forecast for many cities.
