Skin Cancer - And Your Plastic Surgeon Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 500,000 new cases are reported each year-and the incidence is rising faster than any other type of cancer. While skin cancers can be found on any part of the body, about 80 percent appear on the face, head, or neck, where they can be disfiguring as well as dangerous. The purpose of this brochure is to educate you about the different types of skin cancer, their causes, and preventive measures you can take; to help you know when to consult a doctor; and to explain the role of the plastic surgeon in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and other skin growths. WHO GETS SKIN CANCER ...AND WHY The primary cause of skin cancer is ultraviolet radiation -most often from the sun, but also from artificial sources like sunlamps and tanning booths. In fact, researchers believe that our quest for the perfect tan, an increase in outdoor activities, and perhaps the thinning of the earth's protective ozone layer are behind the alarming rise we're now seeing in skin cancers. Anyone can get skin cancer-no matter what your skin type, race or age, no matter where you live or what you do. But your risk is greater if...

Research unlocks genetic secret of skin cancer's spread
(AP) Two research teams have identified genes that appear to make skin cancer spread, raising the prospect of quicker diagnosis and better treatments for the most dangerous tumors. The two groups separately analyzed a type of cancer known as melanoma. Each study identified a set of genes that are active in highly invasive growths. Some genes were common to both studies.

Skin Cancer Overview
Skin cancer is the most common of all human cancers. Some form of skin cancer is diagnosed in more than 1 million people in the United States each year. Cancer occurs when normal cells undergo a transformation during which they grow and multiply without normal controls.
  • As the cells multiply, they form a mass called a tumor. Tumors of the skin are often referred to as lesions.
Tumors are cancerous only if they are malignant. This means that they encroach on and invade neighboring tissues (especially lymph nodes) because of their uncontrolled growth.
Tumors may also travel to remote organs via the bloodstream.
This process of invading and spreading to other organs is called metastasis.
Tumors overwhelm surrounding tissues by invading their space and taking the oxygen and nutrients they need to survive and function.
Skin cancers are of 3 major types: basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma.
  • The vast majority of skin cancers are BCCs or SCCs. While malignant, these are unlikely to spread to other parts of the body. They may be locally disfiguring if not treated early.

Introduction
Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancer. It is estimated that over 1 million new cases occur annually. The annual rates of all forms of skin cancer are increasing each year, representing a growing public concern. It has also been estimated that nearly half of all Americans who live to age 65 will develop skin cancer at least once. The most common warning sign of skin cancer is a change in the appearance of the skin, such as a new growth or a sore that will not heal.

from actual reconstructions after skin cancer removal. However, a number of these cancers occur in awkward location (95% in the head and neck). If an aesthetic unit of the face is involved, such as eyelids, nose, cheeks, lips, ears, or neck, sometimes plastic surgery resection with immediate reconstruction is the best choice. Dr. David Katrana is a well-known expert in skin cancer and has extensive experience in reconstructive techniques. He is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon practicing in Houston, Texas for the last twenty years and has performed thousands of skin cancer surgeries. 99% of the surgeries are done on an out-patient, day surgery basis with frozen section pathology immediately available. 99% of these procedures are done under local anaesthesia with sedation and 99% are reconstructed immediately after resection. Skin Cancer
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? Australians have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Two out of every three Australians who live to the age of 75 can expect to develop some type of skin cancer. For many years Australians thought a good suntan was a sign of a healthy body. The reality is that a good suntan is a sign that you are being exposed to too much UV radiation. There are three main types of skin cancers in Australia. The most dangerous of these cancers is melanoma. Early detection of skin cancers is extremely important; it can stop the spread of cancer to other parts of the body. The three main types of skin cancer are: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) - This is the most common, but least dangerous type of skin cancer. BCCs are usually found on the face and neck. BCCs begin to form as small round or flattened lumps which are either red, pale or pearly in colour and may have blood vessels (which look like tiny veins) over the surface. If untreated, they will spread and can leave bad scarring if you do not get early treatment. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) - This skin cancer is less common, but more dangerous than BCC. This cancer can develop on the lips, particularly the lower lip. SCCs are best described as red scaling areas that may bleed and become ulcerated. Very occasionally, SCCs may spread to the lymph nodes.

What Is Skin Cancer? Skin cancer is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the outer layers of your skin. There are several types of cancer that originate in the skin. The most common types are basal cell carcinoma (70 percent of all skin cancers) and squamous cell carcinoma (20 percent). These types are classified as nonmelanoma skin cancer. Melanoma (five percent of all skin cancers) is the third type of skin cancer. It is less common than basal cell or squamous cell skin cancer, but potentially much more serious. Other types of skin cancer are rare.
Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer. It typically appears as a small raised bump that has a pearly appearance. It is most commonly seen on areas of the skin that have received excessive sun exposure. These cancers may spread to the skin around the cancer but rarely spread to other parts of the body.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma is also seen on the areas of the body that have been exposed to excessive sun (nose, lower lip, hands, and forehead). Often this cancer appears as a firm red bump or ulceration of the skin that does not heal. Squamous cell carcinomas can spread to lymph nodes in the area.
