    What Causes Skin Cancer?
    Sunburn and Sunlight
Very simply, sunburn and UV light can damage your skin, and this damage can lead to skin cancer. There are of course other determining factors, including your heredity and the environment you live in. However, both the total amount of sun received over the years, and overexposure resulting in sunburn can cause skin cancer. Our oncologists and hematologists treat a full range of cancer-related diseases-from cancers of the blood, skin, lymph system and bone marrow to cancers of the solid organs. Skin Cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and usually occurs in fair-skinned individuals who have been exposed to the sun, x-rays, or ultraviolet (UV) light for prolonged periods. Skin cancers affect approximately 600,000 Caucasians every year. The principal cause of skin cancer almost universally accepted by medical experts is overexposure to sunlight, especially when it results in sunburn and blistering. Avoiding sun overexposure is the best defense against skin cancer. And, catching problems early, provides a better chance for successful treatment.

About Basal Cell Carcinoma
The Most Common Skin Cancer
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, affecting 800,000 Americans each year. In fact, it is the most common of all cancers. One out of every three new cancers is a skin cancer, and the vast majority are basal cell carcinomas, often referred to by the abbreviation, BCC. These cancers arise in the basal cells, which are at the bottom of the epidermis (outer skin layer). Until recently, those most often affected were older people, particularly men who had worked outdoors. Although the number of new cases has increased sharply each year in the last few decades, the average age of onset of the disease has steadily decreased. More women are getting BCCs than in the past; nonetheless, men still outnumber them greatly.

If left unchecked, these cancer cells can spread from the skin into other tissues and organs. There are different types of skin cancer. Basal cell carncinoma is the most common. Melanoma is less common, but more dangerous. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top The outer layer of skin, the epidermis, is made up of different types of cells. Skin cancers are classified by the types of epidermal cells involved:
  • Basal cell carcinoma develops from abnormal growth of the cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis and is the most common type of skin cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma involves changes in the squamous cells, found in the middle layer of the epidermis.

Skin Cancer
Each year more than a million people in the United States are diagnosed with the most common forms of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. These two diseases are most often grouped as non-melanoma skin cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 1.3 million new cases of non-melanoma skin cancers will be diagnosed in the United States this year, making these two combined the most common cancer in the United States. Most people who are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancers are age 50 or older, but because these diseases often are a result of too much exposure to the sun, everyone even the youngest toddlers should take precautions against them.
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the single most important cause of skin cancer, especially when the overexposure resulted in sunburn and blistering. Other, less common causes of skin cancer include repeated exposure to x-rays and exposure to coal tar, arsenic, and other industrial compounds.
