    Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
    1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."

ZAMBONI Driver Dream Job: Olympic Sports Manager In addition to being a technical expert, an Olympic sports manager is surrogate parent, psychologist, travel agent, tutor, best friend, and worst enemy to a group of amazingly talented and motivated teenagers. Downhill All the Way When brave Lycra-clad skiers leap into the air at breathtaking speeds at the XIX Winter Games in Salt Lake City in February 2002, Alan will feel the thrill of victory. As the technical expert in the ski jumping and Nordic combined events for the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, Alan worked with architects and engineers to oversee the construction of "K-120," the newest and greatest ski jump in the world. At 343 vertical feet, K-120 is the equivalent to 50 stories high and will propel skiers into a 62 mile-per-hour free-fall. In addition to ensuring that K-120 is just right for jumping, Alan hopes to provide the best possible training advantage to the U.S. team as it goes for gold. "In this job," he says, "you get to work with real pros at the top of their field, and that's an awful lot of fun."

    Ski Jumping
Legendary Norwegian nordic athlete Sondre Nordheim is credited with the first officially measured ski jump in 1860. The first ski jumping contest was held in Trysil, Norway, in 1862. Throughout the mid-1800s, ski jumping was part of ski carnivals in Norway, but the sport gained added prestige when, in 1892, the Norwegian royal family decided to donate the "King's Cup" trophy to the winner of the annual meet held in Holmenkollen. Norwegian emigrants brought the sport to the United States and the first ski jumping meet in the U.S took place Feb. 8, 1887. It was won by Norwegian emigrant Mikkel Hemmestvedt.

    Competition
On the normal and large hill, each competitor takes two official jumps, which are scored for distance and style. The scores for each jump are added together and the competitor with the highest total after the two rounds is declared the winner. The distance the jumper leaps is measured along the curve of the landing hill from the takeoff point to the point between the jumper's two feet as he first touches the hill. Style points for each jump are evaluated on a scale of to 20 by five International Ski Federation-appointed judges

On this page: Encyclopedia WordNet Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping skiing Encyclopedia skiing, sport of sliding over snow on skis—long, narrow, flexible runners. Water skiing is a warm-weather sport in which a motor-propelled craft tows a skier through the water. Equipment Once made of highly polished wood, most skis are now made of plastics, polyurethane foam, and other materials. They come in many different sizes and styles, depending on whether their intended use is cross-country, downhill, or backcountry skiing or ski jumping. The bindings that attach the ski to the boot vary as well. Most skiers also use a pair of poles, each of which has a wriststrap on the top, a sharp tip on the bottom, and a circular ring about 4 in. (10 cm) from the tip to prevent it from sinking into the snow. The bottoms of skis may be waxed for maximum glide in varying snow conditions. Types of Events Traditional competitive skiing comprises four events: (1) downhill, a steep descent in a race against time; (2) slalom, raced on a sharply twisting course marked off by flags; (3) the ski jump, in which contestants leap from specially prepared jump slopes, and are judged on both distance and form; and (4) cross-country, in which skiers race over a long course (ranging from 10 km/6 mi to 50 km/31 mi in the Olympic games) on which the terrain and obstacles test stamina and maneuverability. The first two are known as Alpine events, the latter two as Nordic events.
