But whether or not Hays, driver of the U.S. men's bobsled team, U.S. women's freestyle ski aerialist Cook, or their fellow Olympic athletes focus midflight on the high-tech materials used in their sporting gear, most of their gear is indeed high tech from top to bottom. Racing headfirst on a sleigh at 90 miles per hour and skiing with a gun. These aren't things your crazy uncle does - they're Olympic sports. Here's a look at some of the weird winter sports you'll see at the 2002 Olympics. Skeleton
Skeleton is being held at the Winter Olympics for the first time since 1948. This was the world's first sliding sport. Riders slide on a small metal sled with two runners. The sport was given its name in 1892 when the new metal sled was introduced and everyone thought it looked like a skeleton. Riders do risk being nothing but a pile of bones by the end of a run since they ride head first at speeds nearing 90 miles per hour. In 2002, women will compete in this sport for the first time. Biathlon
Biathlon combines two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Competitors are given points for how fast they ski and how accurate they can shoot. The sport originally started out as a survival strategy. People in Northern Europe would ski with guns to hunt for food and defend their countries. In the biathlon that takes place at the Winter Olympics, competitors just Snowball Fights shoot at targets - not animals or each other.

"It's one-of-a-kind," said Bulent Bulut, Sports Operations Manager at Utah Olympic Park and coordinator of Adventure Camp. "It's the only camp in the world where you can do all Olympic sports in one week, except alpine skiing," he said. Held Tuesday-Friday and open to youth 8-14 years old, the camp includes ski jumping, luge, speed skating, biathlon, curling, bobsled, skeleton, and ice hockey. National- and Olympic-level coaches instruct the campers for each sport. And because it keeps its numbers low - 26 campers per session, split into two counselor-led groups of 13 - Adventure Camp offers an intimate, personal experience.

While the 2002 Winter Olympics were being held in Salt Lake City, Utah, our second graders had many activities in Phy Ed class which were patterned after Olympic events. Students participated in curling, bob sledding, giant slalom skiing, ice hockey, cross country skiing, and mogul skiing. Because they enjoyed their activities, students decided that Winter Olympic sports would be a good topic for their graph. Children and adults in the Milwaukee area were very involved in watching and talking about the Olympics because many of the skaters trained here at the Petit Ice Center. Chris Witty, who won the gold medal for speed skating, and several other famous skaters including Bonnie Blair and Dan Jansen, are from our area. To make their graph, students talked about popular Winter Olympic sports and why people liked them the most. Students nominated and voted for their top five favorite Winter Olympic sports then voted again for their individual favorites out of the five choices. The graph was made using AppleWorks with the matching graphics inserted to create the border. We worked together to create three questions which could be answered by using information on the graph. Have fun answering our questions!

Background Information Sports and the Olympic Tradition - An Important Part of Slovenia's Cultural Heritage March 2001 "You are a small country but great at sport!" These were the words of the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch, who visited Slovenia in 1993, describing the extremely rapid development of sport and Olympic ideas in the country. Upon becoming an individual member of the Olympic family in 1992, new horizons opened up for the development of sport and Olympic ideals in Slovenia. Sport and the Olympic tradition are important parts of Slovenia's cultural heritage. In his book Slava vojvodine Kranjske ("The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola") the renowned historian Janez Vajkard Valvasor wrote about the skiers of the Blo¹ka planota (Bloke plain) as early as 1689. The early gymnastic clubs that formed in the mid-19th century brought sports closer to people and made a significant contribution to shaping Slovenian national consciousness. The development of modern sport in Slovenia is inseparably connected to the engineer

Mouth guards worn for Olympic sports, what about chess?
?April is National Facial Protection Month focuses on sports injury prevention than teeth?
Rosemont, IL (April 1, 2002)?Whether or not chess becomes an Olympic (winter or summer) sport, you certainly do not see chess players wearing mouth guards. You do see hockey players, skiers, boxers, wrestlers and other Olympian athletes wearing them. You also see non-Olympians, such as roller bladers, baseball players, skateboarders and soccer players, wearing protective mouth and face gear. What?s the deal?
The boys? parents do not mind paying for orthodontics, which is why they also do not mind paying for mouth guards.
The month of April finds people, children and adults alike, outside playing sports and exercising. Such healthy activities, however, can turn unhealthy when injuries occur. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Association of Orthodontists are sponsoring the third annual ?April is National Facial Protection Month.? Facial protection and injury prevention are the key messages from this ?team? of dental specialists.

In fact, one of the joys (and frustrations for us old-timers) on a slope is to watch a wolf pack of fearless four-year-olds schuss by and spray snow in our faces. What about the bobsledding? We doubt that you see much of it around your home town. So we don't cover it in this article. The same with luge. In fact, we've come to the conclusion that the luge is probably the silliest sport ever devised: Grown men and now women going 90 mph feet-first on a sled. Come on! One tidbit about the luge, however, that raises it somewhat in our estimation: In 1905, when Einstein postulated his Special Theory of Relativity in which he performed a "mind experiment" imagining what would happen if he could ride on a beam of light (that is, travel at a speed of nearly 670 million mph) the fastest speed attained by man on earth up to that time was a little over 90 mph, and it was on a luge! In any event, let's concentrate on how to photograph the winter sports you're more likely to find in your home area.

Home to the legendary downhill skiing olympic champion, Franz Klammer, Bad Kleinkirchheim is "his" place to ski and this is where you'll still find him enjoying the slopes from the Kaiserburg to St. Oswald. Don't be too surprised then, if you suddenly seem him whizzing right by you! Carving tips from former downhill champion Franz Klammer:
"Put your weight on the edge, push off well and accelerate to the maximum on the next turn." This is advice given to a chosen few excellent skiers.
    • In general, Klammer suggests the allround carver, a normal length carving ski. With the shorter skis you need to be much better, and have greater control, especially when fatigue starts to set in.
    • The race carvers should only be used when there is enough room on the slopes and then only by expert skiers.
    • What Franz Klammer may lack in training nowadays, he makes up for in technique:"I still ski exactly as I used to 15 years ago; I just decide which mode to use - nice and easy or turbo!"

    WINTER OLYMPICS FREESTYLE SKIING
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1992 FREESTYLE SKIING is a product of America in the 1960s, when social change and freedom of expression led to new and exciting skiing techniques. Originally a mix of alpine skiing and acrobatics, freestyle skiing developed over the decades into the present-day Olympic sport. The International Ski Federation (FIS) recognized freestyle as a sport in 1979 and brought in new regulations regarding certification of athletes and jump techniques in an effort to curb the dangerous elements of the competitions. The first World Cup series was staged in 1980 and the first World Championships took place in 1986 in Tignes, France, featuring moguls, aerials and ballet. Shortly after its World Championships debut, the IOC selected freestyle skiing as a demonstration event at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. With the World Cup circuit firmly in place under the FIS, the popularity of the sport was growing rapidly. Freestyle skiing proved a success in Calgary, and the IOC decided to add freestyle to the Olympic program in Albertville. Much to the dismay of national freestyle federations, however, the IOC only accepted moguls into the program, leaving out aerials and ballet. In Albertville, the freestyle competitions were extremely successful. The FIS and Lillehammer Olympic Organizing Committee urged the IOC to add aerials competition to the Lillehammer program. The IOC approved the addition of aerials prior to the 1994 Olympics, and there have been four freestyle medal events at the last two Olympic Winter Games. The freestyle discipline of ballet has not been accepted in the Olympic program.

    The Winning Edge
Richard Young, Technology and Innovation Coordinator, UKSI, London, England
Dr. Richard Young at the UKSI competed in the sport of cycling at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics while completing a degree in biomechanics Today, victory in sport is a matter of a fraction of a second or a few millimeters separating first and second place. Therefore any legal, cost-effective, and performance-enhancing technology has to be taken seriously, especially given the amount of money associated with winning. Whole new scientific disciplines like sports psychology, sports nutrition, and sports bio-mechanics have developed over the last 30 years, and have become part of the supporting framework behind elite sportsmen and women around the world. During the last five to ten years, rather late into the fray, sports engineers and technologists have also emerged, and their contributions to the engineering and technological aspects of sports equipment and athlete biomechanics have gained increasing acceptance. All of these disciplines have combined to help continually improve elite performance in sport. It has long been accepted that an understanding of fluid flow phenomena could lead to performance enhancements for certain competitive sports, especially those dominated by aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. Over the years, FLUENT has been used for a number of pioneering simulations of this type, such as motor racing, ski jumping, yachting, and sports ball modeling. Results have been used to optimize the balance between drag and downforce (motor racing), to illustrate why one posture is better than another (ski jumping), to perfect the design of a winged keel (yachting), and to better understand the impact of laces and geometric patterns on flight (sports balls). Performance enhancements that result from analyses like these will undoubtedly lead to the continued expansion of sports engineering in the years to come through the use of CFD.
