Alpine Skiing
People began strapping skis to their feet as far back as 5,000 years ago. Englishman Sir Arnold Lunn and Austrian Hannes Schneider invented modern alpine racing. Lunn, a son of a London travel agent, spent his years traveling through the Alps and envisioning racing through the majestic range. Lunn organized the first slalom in 1922 in Muerren, Switzerland, and joined forces with Schneider two years later to organize the race that would become the first Olympic alpine event.

Competition
Alpine skiing is among the most exciting Olympics events and was introduced to the Olympic program at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games with a men's and women's combined event, featuring a downhill and two slalom runs. After the cancellation of the following two Games because of war, alpine skiing returned to St. Moritz with a program of six events. The Oslo Games in 1952 welcomed giant slalom to the program and marked the departure of the combined event. The combined event did not return until 1988.

Demonstration Sports at the Olympic Games At most modern day Olympic Games there have been a variety of demonstration sports held as part of the Games, but not as official events eligible for medals. Some of the events have later gone on to become official Olympic sports. Originally, demonstration sports and events were included to showcase sports or events which were unique to the country hosting the Games, but now they are often used as a stepping stone in the application for consideration as a future Olympic medal sport. Sports that have been demonstration sports in the past, include the following:
  • American Football: 1932, Los Angeles

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics
The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

Sponsors USSA Honors Athletes, Officials, Volunteers, Coaches, Clubs at Awards Dinner PARK CITY, Utah (MAY 24) - Olympians Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA) and Todd Lodwick (Steamboat Springs, CO) were honored Saturday night with the highest athletic awards bestowed by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association while former USSA President and CEO Howard Peterson was given the Julius Blegen Award, the organization's highest award. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) was named USSA Club of the Year. In addition, Liz McIntyre of the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team was honored as USSA Coach of the Year while Chris Grover, U.S. cross country development coach, was named Development Coach of the Year. USSA is the national governing body for the Olympic sports of skiing and snowboarding with a mission to make the United States the best in the world by the 2006 Olympics. USSA's 2004 Congress at the Yarrow Resort and Conference Hotel began Thursday and included about 200 delegates attending committee, subcommittee and working group sessions which address the rules and progression of all sports (alpine, cross country, disabled alpine and cross country, freestyle, ski jumping, nordic combined and snowboarding) across the country. The Chairman's Awards Dinner was held Saturday evening during Congress, honoring volunteers, coaches, athletes and clubs for their outstanding contributions during the past season. Rahlves, a two-time Olympian, won four races during the 2004 season, including two downhills and two super Gs. He became the first non-Austrian to win the super G during Kitzbuehel's renowned Hahnenkamm Weekend en route to earning the Beck International Award. With eight victories, including six in downhill and two super G, plus the 2001 super G world championships, Rahlves is the most successful U.S. men's speed skier. The Beck International is the highest athlete award from USSA, given annually to an athlete for "outstanding" international results.
