Disqualifications of two of Jean-Claude Killy's rivals in the slalom somewhat tarnished his Alpine triple crown.

The 24-year-old mod marvel, rival to Gen. Charles de Gaulle as France's reigning national hero, became the second man in Olympic history to annex the Alpine triple crown with a partially tainted triumph in the rhubarb-plagued special slalom race. Killy's victories in the downhill, giant slalom, and special slalom equaled the gold medal coup previously engineered only by Austrian ace Toni Sailer in the 1956 Games. Monti, Ellefsaeter Win
The ensuing hassle over the status of one of the ousted skiers, Karl Schranz of Austria, rubbed some of the luster off Killy's climactic victory after Eugenio Monti, Italy's 40-year-old bobsledding daredevil, and Ole Ellefsaeter, Norway's rugged cross-country skier, each captured a second gold medal. Norway virtually clinched the medal lead with Ellefsaeter's triumph, breaking Russian domination of the past three Winter Olympics.

Ski Patrol Magazine Archives Fall 1998 - "Sentimental Journey: An NSP Timeline" This article is reprinted from Ski Patrol Magazine page. Minnie Dole breaks his ankle at Stowe, Vermont. Dole organizes ski patrol for National Downhill Racers at Stowe, and his friend Roger Langley encourages him to create a national patrolling entity. The rest, as they say, is history. The first National Ski Patrol Manual is published, outlining the organizational structure, membership requirements, and how to form a local patrol. Women are formally welcomed into the organization. Dole's idea to develop a winter warfare unit leads to the creation of the Tenth Mountain Division, which trained at Camp Hale, Colorado. NSP introduces the rust-colored parka through the White Stag Manufacturing Company. Edward Taylor accepts Minnie Dole's invitation to serve as national director, on the condition that the national headquarters be moved from New York City to his hometown of Denver so he can attend to NSP affairs without extensive travel. Dole hand-picks a patrol for the first FIS race ever held in the United States (the predecessor to the World Alpine Ski Championships).

This page is under construction, and will grow and change as we acquire new material. We're not attempting to do a comprehensive history of ski jumping. We intend to include a variety of information and photos of historical interest, to give a sense of how the sport has developed. Wherever possible, we will link to another site rather than duplicating information. If you have information to share, or know of a website that has old stuff related to ski jumping, please contact our webmaster We will credit the sources of material we post. If we haven't listed credits, it's because we don't know the source; we'd welcome your help with this. American Ski Jumping Began in the Midwest ... Still strong in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois! This sport's American roots go back to the 1880s, and it began in the midwest ... places like Red Wing, St Paul, and Eau Claire. Some of these clubs date back to the 1880s! The first recorded North American distance record was set in 1887 by Mikkel Hemmestvedt. He flew 37 feet! We believe the picture below is the Hemmestvedt brothers. The Wright brothers didn't get around to flying until about ten or fifteen years after this photo was taken. Before downhill skiing became a popular participant sport following World War II, most people's familiarity with skiing was tied to jumping. The Norge Ski Club in Chicago, one of the oldest ski clubs in the world, helped to bring visibility of the sport to that city. In 1939, and again in 1954, temporary jumps were erected in Soldier Field, now the home of the Chicago Bears. They were "snowed" with shaved ice.

History of RBC and the Olympics
At RBC, the Olympic games represent excellence, teamwork, diversity, and commitment - these are the same values we aspire to with our employees, our clients, and our communities. Through our past Olympic and amateur sport support, we have laid a foundation to build a lasting legacy for Canada. In 1947, Sidney Dawes, the founder of the Canadian Olympic Committee, phoned the President of the Royal Bank of Canada, Sydney Dobson, and asked for the bank’s help in getting the Canadian Olympic team to the Winter Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Royal Bank said “yes,” and from that day forward, RBC Financial Group has been a supporter of the Canadian Olympic Team and Canadian athletes. For over 50 years RBC has supported a wide range of programs with the goal of helping amateur athletes achieve their potential, whether that be on the world stage by achieving Olympic podium success, or at the grassroots level, providing programs that allow access to sport for kids. As a leading Canadian company, we look forward to helping build a lasting legacy for Vancouver, Whistler, and Canada.

Langlaufski: History and Sport in the German Alps
By Mike Childers It is winter in Germany, and we awaken to snow. Large, light flakes are falling outside our window, covering the ground in a feathery white blanket. I am reminded of my childhood in Colorado.
Jeremy and I dress quickly and load the car with our skis, boots and poles before stomping up the steps into the main building of the gasthaus. Breakfast is hard rolls smothered in butter and jam with cheese and salami. We wash it all down with a couple of cups of coffee, and we are off to the hill. We slam our feet into heavy boots in the parking lot and trek to the bahn for the quick ride to mid-mountain for the first run of the day.
Seventy years after the ski revolution in Scandinavia, in places like St. Anton and Kitzbuhel,
Contention over the sport fell against a backdrop of anxiety that pervaded the entire continent; Europe was living under a cloud of uncertainty and fear for much of the 20th century. Modernization had led to a world war, which had led to the end of the Europe that had existed for centuries. Peace had come at a terrible price for many nations. Millions lay dead on the battlefields, killed by new horrible weapons and the false assurance that the old order would rein in the new terror. Germany paid a particularly high price. Burdened by reparations and humiliated by an unjust peace, Germany remained in chaos long after World War I. Into this bedlam strode Adolph Hitler, whose rise to power in 1933 brought about new and more frightening realities in a world falling further into economic depression.

Archaeologists believe the ancient Olympic Games began more than 4,000 years ago in Olympia, a valley in Greece. Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC. Men competed, in the nude, in running, wrestling, pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Why in the nude … well, to keep the ladies out of the action. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games. Today, not only are women allowed to watch and compete, they are encouraged to do so. Check out a few of our historical Olympic pages here at usolympicteam.com.

Death and taxes. The proverbial two inevitabilities of life. Well, here's inevitability Number Three, long-term care. 14 million older Americans will need long-term care services by the year 2020. What makes matters worse is that half of that population claim to have done little or no long-term care financial planning. These consumers need someone who understands the complex field of long-term care and who can use that knowledge to help consumers prepare for the future.
In response to this need, the Corporation for Long-Term Care Certification (CLTCC), in cooperation with the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), has introduced the first certification program for insurance professionals who advise consumers on the purchase of long-term care policies. In order to be certified, program participants must complete an eight-part course of study. Topics include myths and realities of aging, long-term care facilities, Medicaid, long-term care insurance, and estate planning.
Once the course of study is completed, program participants must pass a four-hour exam. Professionals who receive the CLTC designation must be re-certified every two years. The goal of the program, says CLTCC President Harley S. Gordon, is to train long-term care insurance salesmen to think and act as professionals. "That means looking at all the options, not just the sale of insurance, and work closely with other professionals to find the right solution based on a client's needs." Gordon, an attorney, authored the book, "How to Protect Your Life Savings from Catastrophic Illness".

Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."
