Featured speakers include 1948 U.S. Olympians Suzy Harris Rytting and Dick Movitz, as well as ski historian Alan Engen. Photos and video b?roll will be available.
"Salt Lake City residents don't do anything with snow except cuss it and shovel it," wrote Marc Strand, a 1915 immigrant from Oslo, Norway, who formed the region's first ski club, promoted world-class ski jumping tournaments and has been labeled the "father of Utah skiing." (He hadn't heard that ore miners had been sliding on the stuff since the 1870s seated on the working end of their shovels for a speedy trip down the slope at the end of their shifts.)

The VIII Winter Olympic Games
Excerpted from Squaw Valley USA: The First Fifty Years Word spread quickly and on January 7th, 1955 Cushing addressed the U.S. Olympic Committee in New York. Though prepared with a speech and film, he didn't get an opportunity to use either. The committee was so engaged with the "idea of a California valley with an annual snowfall of 450 inches, and a downhill event with areas that had never even been schussed successfully," recalls Cushing, that he found himself buried under an avalanche of questions and controversy. In the end, Squaw Valley emerged as the USOC's choice for the 1960 Winter Games. Committee members continued to assure Cushing that his case was hopeless. Innsbruck even began assigning living quarters to various delegations. Marillac however, proceeded to convince the European-dominated Federacion Internacionale du Ski (FIS), who were committed to the Alps' glory, that Squaw Valley was technically sufficient. Cushing's campaign succeeded through the power of an idea - a return to the Olympic ideals of simplicity with a focus on athleticism and diversity. His bid, written in French, English, and Spanish, declared that "the Olympics belong to the world. Not just one continent." On June 17, 1955, Cushing and his team had visited forty-two IOC delegates, yet remained uncertain of victory. Then, with a final vote of 32 to 30, the IOC chose Squaw Valley to host the Games. Word spread quickly across the globe, followed by shock and disbelief. While Cushing's team celebrated, athletes wondered about winter in California. Cushing immediately began work to attract top people to the Organizing Committee and California started planning the necessary infrastructure.

The History of Squaw Valley USA
Excerpted from Squaw Valley USA: The First Fifty Years S quaw Valley is a special place, difficult to experience without falling under its spell. It is as if, by its very nature, the valley commands a relationship with those who set foot here. One can travel the world hiking, skiing, climbing, and exploring; Squaw Valley's beauty will still impress. Those who have been involved as team members, visitors, or "locals" proudly attest to an inexplic-able connection with the valley. Many have contributed to Squaw's founding and growth. In 1946, Squaw Valley worked its magic on a young man named Alexander Cushing, who had traveled with friends to the Sierra Nevada on a four day train ride from the East Coast. Cushing, then a lawyer on Wall Street, had served in the Navy and was ready for a change. "The war turns the world upside down and I was having a hard time adjusting" he recalls. The strain of duty left him with solid impressions of life's fragility, and of the importance of living life to the fullest. So, as many have before and since, Cushing headed west. On his first day skiing at Sugar Bowl, Cushing did the "unmentionable" and broke his ankle. As the fourth at Bridge, his friends demanded he stay. Always optimistic, Cushing contented himself relaxing on the sundeck and watching other skiers. While there, he heard a young man named Wayne Poulsen speak of a nearby place with the best skiing in the country. Intrigued by Poulsen's statement, Cushing asked to see this place, and soon found himself on crutches, watching from the meadow while his friends hiked and schussed the glorious peaks of Squaw Valley.

Erie County sheriff's officials have ended their investigation into a crash that claimed the life of an Arcade mother of two, after charging the other driver with a traffic violation for failing to yield at a stop sign.
Sheriff's deputies said a vehicle driven by Travis Mayer, 23, of East Aurora, went through a stop sign on Hunters Creek Road on June 21 and struck the driver's door of a vehicle driven by Diane L. Hamblin.
Hamblin died in Erie County Medical Center, following the two-vehicle crash that afternoon in the Town of Wales.

Olympic skiers stripped of titles
Story Tools LAUSANNE, Switzerland The Court of Arbitration for Sport has stripped cross-country skiers Olga Danilova and Johann Muehlegg of their Olympic gold medals. Russian Danilova was disqualified from the 30-kilometer race in Salt Lake City last year after failing a drugs test, but had been allowed to keep her winner's medal from the 5k pursuit. That now goes to Canada's Beckie Scott. In a similar case, Muehlegg's gold medals go to Norwegian pair Thomas Alsgaard and Frode Estil. The German-born Spaniard was disqualified after winning the 50k event, but kept two other titles. Scott, meanwhile, makes history by becoming the first Olympic athlete to be awarded bronze, silver and gold medals in the same event. "To say I'm an Olympic gold medallist now is the greatest honor," Scott told a media teleconference from Ramsaw, Austria. "I'm just so happy that things turned out the way they did." Scott, originally the bronze medalist, had been upgraded to silver earlier this year when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) disqualified second-placed Russian Larissa Lazutina after a positive doping test.

Olympic History ...
Chamonix, France
Site of the First Winter Games
By Susan Thomas Chamonix (pronounced Sham-oh-nee) is a quaint little town with the language and food of France, and the beauty and class of Switzerland. It was here that the early Olympic organizers decided to hold the very first Winter Games. An ice rink in the shadow of 15,000-foot Mont Blanc provided the setting for skating. A snow made bobsled run, which no longer exists, ran from part way up the mountain and into the town. And the skiing of course took place on the slopes where skiers flock every winter, 74 years later. At the time of the first Winter Games, a train moved people about half way up the mountain to the glacier, Mer de Glace. The train has been upgraded and it is still there for sightseeing. The Mer de Glace is an impressive, immense glacier that runs down the flanks of Mont Blanc almost touching the town of Chamonix. The glacier reaches down into the valley like a crooked old finger made of old snow and blue ice. It wasn't until 1955, 3 decades after those first games, that the Telepherique (tram) de l'Aiguille Du Midi (that's the high peak at the top, translated as the Needle of Noon) carried locals and tourists all the way to the top of the Mer de Glace. Now, that tram lures people from all over the world to Chamonix.

Luger Dinah Browne is ready for a place in the history books whether she does well at the Salt Lake City Games or not. Browne, flying the flag for the US Virgin Islands, is about to become the first black woman to compete in the luge at the Winter Olympics. It is a dream come true for the 32-year-old, who was in college before she saw her first snowflake and only sat on her first sled three years ago. "I thought, 'Wow, I never planned this!'" explained Browne.
What I enjoy most about the luge is that because it's so new to me, I'm constantly learning
Dinah Browne "Being the first of something may not pay off for me, but it may pay off for someone else. You hope others will follow." Browne first donned a crash helmet and hurtled down a tube of ice at a two-week training camp in Calgary when she was 29.

Ski Jumping: Ammann Shines With Two Individual Gold While Germany Wins Team Gold
Germany may have won the team ski jumping competition by the closest margin in the Olympic history of the sport, but it was Swiss wonder kid
Ammann surprised favorites Adam Malysz (POL) and Sven Hannawald (GER) to win the Individual K90 competition. Simon Ammann that shone brightest on the jumping hills at Utah Olympic Park becoming the first double-gold medalist of the Salt Lake Games.
Ammann surprised favorites Adam Malysz (POL), the current World Cup leader, and 2001 Four-Hill Tournament champion Sven Hannawald (GER) to win the Individual K90 competition and Switzerland's first ski jumping medal since Walter Steiner won a silver medal at Sapporo in 1972.
Jumping with a newfound confidence and grin from ear-to-ear, the 20-year-old Ammann from Unterwasser then became one of only seven ski jumpers in Olympic history who have won two or more gold medals by winning the Individual K120 competition. Again Ammann overcame tough challenges from Malysz and Hannawald.
Hannawald had the opportunity to snatch the gold from Ammann with the last jump of the competition in Individual K120, but faltered by crashing on the landing to finish fourth. With Hannawald's mistake, Ammann won his second gold medal in four days and became the first ski jumper since Finland's Matti Nykanen at the 1988 Calgary Games to win both the K90 and K120 competitions in one Games.

    Colorado Ski History Timeline: 1900 - 1950's
At the dawn of the new century, most Coloradans remain unfamiliar with the great ski jumping tournaments in Norway or the ski culture of the Midwest (largely contained within the Scandinavian populations.) Nor are they aware of the improvements in ski equipment that evolved in Norway during the previous decade.
In the Scandinavian countries and the Alps, the first few years of the 20 th century is a time of transition from using one long ski pole to using two shorter push sticks for climbing and running cross country. The Finns are credited with the first use of the shorter push sticks ( Vol. 11, #4 Skiing Heritage , p.8 The word "ski" or "skee", rarely used before 1900, is common usage after the turn of the century. In mid-winter, 1903, the Steamboat Pilot describes "Winter Sport on the Treacherous and Speedy Skee." "Skees are swift but mighty treacherous.

    Ski Jumping
Legendary Norwegian nordic athlete Sondre Nordheim is credited with the first officially measured ski jump in 1860. The first ski jumping contest was held in Trysil, Norway, in 1862. Throughout the mid-1800s, ski jumping was part of ski carnivals in Norway, but the sport gained added prestige when, in 1892, the Norwegian royal family decided to donate the "King's Cup" trophy to the winner of the annual meet held in Holmenkollen. Norwegian emigrants brought the sport to the United States and the first ski jumping meet in the U.S took place Feb. 8, 1887. It was won by Norwegian emigrant Mikkel Hemmestvedt.

On the normal and large hill, each competitor takes two official jumps, which are scored for distance and style. The scores for each jump are added together and the competitor with the highest total after the two rounds is declared the winner. The distance the jumper leaps is measured along the curve of the landing hill from the takeoff point to the point between the jumper's two feet as he first touches the hill.
