Norwegian makes Winter Olympic history

Bjorn Dahlie on his way to make Winter Olympic history Bjorn Daehlie became the first man ever to win six gold medals at the Winter Olympics when he won the 10-kilometer cross-country race. The Norwegian's triumph adds to the three golds he won at Albertville in 1992 and the two he collected at Lillehammer four years ago. Skiing in steady rain at the Snow Harp course, Daehlie crossed the finish line in 27 minutes 24.5 seconds while Austria's Markus Gandler, eight seconds slower, won the silver. Finland's Mika Myllylae, winner of the 30K race on Monday, collected the bronze in 27:40.1. Daehlie had a disaster in the 30k race on Monday, finishing in 20th after putting the wrong wax on his skis. However he got it right this time and led from the start. By the first checkpoint at 1.8 kilometers he was 6.3 seconds faster than the closest challenger in the 97-strong field and he never let that lead slip. In a fine show of sportsmanship, Daehlie postponed his celebrations until Philip Boit, the only Kenyan at the games, finished the course.

Alpine Skiing: Kostelic Leads Rush To Alpine Gold
Croatia's Janica Kostelic raised the Olympic bar for alpine skiing by claiming four Olympic medals in a single Games, and also matched the records of Jean-Claude Killy (FRA) and Toni Sailer (AUT) by claiming three golds.

Janica Kostelic of Croatia competes in the women's slalom during the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games at the Deer Valley Resort.
Kostelic wasn't the only succesful skier during the two weeks of alpine competition. Men's World Cup overall points leader Stephan Eberharter (AUT) won a medal of each color, capping his Olympics with a dominating performance in winning the giant slalom. He claimed a bronze behind teammate Fritz Strobl (AUT) in the Games' most prestigious event, the men's downhill, then settled for silver behind record-setting Kjetil Andre Aamodt (NOR), who also won the combined gold to push his unprecedented medal haul to seven.
Bode Miller (USA) provided much of the best slalom skiing during the Games. A scintillating second run of slalom moved him up to a silver-medal finish in the combined, and a strong second run gave him a second silver in the giant slalom behind Eberharter.

High speed detachable quad lifts, warm plastic boots and turny shaped skis are the products of years and years of research and development. The early lifts were primitive, but they got skiers to the tops of the mountains. Leather boots and wooden skis were tough to use, but they slid on snow. At the Museum, you can see the old equipment, as well as the hardships the early recreational skiers had to endure. Take a break from a vigorous day of skiing in Vail or Beaver Creek, and travel back to times when skiers braved exciting mountains with primitive, basic equipment. Alpine Skiing
People began strapping skis to their feet as far back as 5,000 years ago. Englishman Sir Arnold Lunn and Austrian Hannes Schneider invented modern alpine racing. Lunn, a son of a London travel agent, spent his years traveling through the Alps and envisioning racing through the majestic range. Lunn organized the first slalom in 1922 in Muerren, Switzerland, and joined forces with Schneider two years later to organize the race that would become the first Olympic alpine event.

Competition
Alpine skiing is among the most exciting Olympics events and was introduced to the Olympic program at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games with a men's and women's combined event, featuring a downhill and two slalom runs. After the cancellation of the following two Games because of war, alpine skiing returned to St. Moritz with a program of six events. The Oslo Games in 1952 welcomed giant slalom to the program and marked the departure of the combined event. The combined event did not return until 1988.

All rates are for the 2005 - 2006 winter season. Utah Olympic Park was a competition venue for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games for Nordic jumping and the sliding sports of bobsleigh, luge and skeleton. The nearly 400-acre Park features a mixture of sporting facilities and visitor areas for an incredible Olympic experience. The state-of-the-art park hosted more than 300,000 visitors and 14 Olympic medal events in February 2002. The Utah Olympic Park now serves as a year-round competition and training ground for recreational and high-performance athletes. Construction on the facility started in 1990 with the development of the infrastructure, the 750,000 gallon freestyle training pool and the ski jumps as part of phase I. The sliding track was included in the second phase and started in the spring of 1994. The first athlete to go down the track was on a luge on January 10, 1997. Today, the public can watch athletes in training, visit the Alf Engen Ski History Museum and the George Eccles Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games Museum, race down the track in a bobsled, or learn how to steer your own skeleton or luge sled by taking an Intro camp. The Park is owned by a non-profit organization, the Utah Athletic Foundation which is responsible for keeping the Park and the Utah Olympic Oval operating for use by future athletes, world champions and the general public. Norway's Kjetil Andre Aamodt wins his second 2002 Oly gold, his record-setting seventh medal.
(photo: Penta Photo) For the second time this week, Norway's Kjetil Andre Aamodt used the Snowbasin downhill course to establish himself as the greatest alpine skier in Olympic history. Aamodt won the men's super G here today, once again setting the Olympic record for most medals, seven, ever earned by an alpine skier. Starting third, Aamodt established the time to beat at 1 minute, 21.58 seconds, then endured a barrage of Austrians, none of whom could best his time. Stephan Eberharter of Austria was closest, finishing 2nd in 1:21.68, followed by teammates Andreas Schifferer in 1:21.83 and Fritz Strobl in 1:21.92.

It began in Norway, and ended up all over the world. by Morten Lund
Destiny or lucky circumstance, or perhaps a lot of both, contrived to boost alpine skiing from a pastime on a par with slogging about on skis and with sledding and skating into something deeper, a way of life and a treasure of recreation practiced so widely today and available somewhere in most of the snowy mountain ranges on earth.
In short, alpine skiing has reached a popularity and a global penetration far beyond the wildest dreams of its pioneers.
And actually, there are at least some solid explanations.
Pioneer alpine skiers in the 1920s were drawing on a trial-and-error process of millenniums, at least five thousand years, of winnowing out mistakes such as short broad skis and a single long pole while preserving advances such as long, narrow skis and two shorter poles.
There was a rather startling, intense and unprecedented moment at the end of the many preceding centuries of slow-moving evolution as the skiing of a tiny sector of a tiny nation led to a climactic, unprecedented spurt of technique and technology in the matter of ski descent.

History of Alpine Skiing Before skis were used for fun and leisure, the ski was used for work and transportation. The oldest known version is a wide, short ski found in Sweden that has been shown to be over 4500 years old , and cave and rock drawings suggest that skis were used even long before then. These first skis may have been used by a hunter or a traveler, as they were commonly used during the long winters in Northern Russia and the Scandinavian countries. Early skis were not made for speed, but to designed to keep a traveler on top of the snow as they went about their business. The people from the Telemark area of Norway have been largely credited with developing skiing into a sport, somewhere in the early 1700's. They invented the Telemark and the Christiana (now known as the Christie) turns as methods of artfully controlling speeds on downhill descents. They were also quite fond of jumping. Thus, disciplines in both alpine and Nordic skiing owe their existence to these early pioneers. The distinction that now we make between the different disciplines of skiing was not made centuries ago. All of the early skis had a boot mounted to the ski only at the toe, with the heel free to move up and down, what we now call a Nordic ski.

ORIGIN :: By about 650 B.C., the Ancient Games were held over five days, involving running, wrestling, the pentathlon, horse riding and chariot racing. Participants came to compete from every corner of the Greek world aiming at the ultimate prize - an olive wreath and a "heroic" return to their city-states. Athletes competed in the nude and upon victory were awarded a crown of wild olive leaves. Women and slaves were strictly forbidden to attend the Games under the punishment of death. BANNED :: The Ancient Games were held for almost 1200 years until 393 A.D. when Roman Emperor Theodosius I banned all pagan festivals (the Olympics celebrated the Greek god Zeus). He asserted that the Games placed an excessive public focus on athletic and spiritual affairs and abolished them.

Alf Engen Ski Museum Thirteen years ago, Alan Engen had an idea for a ski museum. Today, visitors to the Utah Olympic Park can take a year-round, interactive journey through the Alf Engen Ski Museum inside the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center. A tour through the 4,000-square foot museum includes a 10-minute film that traces Utah's ski history and then evolutionary displays on cross-country skiing and Nordic jumping. There are games of skill in ski jumping and touch-screen displays. A popular activity is the virtual reality ski theater where visitors hold onto ski poles and choose to take a run down the Olympic downhill course at Snowbasin, Olympic slalom run at Deer Valley or a deep powder run at Alta. A video plays on a wide screen, surround sound introduces the feeling of speed, and the floor vibrates to simulate skiing. Next is a KSL Television video which explains how the Great Salt Lake affects the quality of snow. A topographic map of the Wasatch Mountains identifies the 14 Utah ski resorts. Another interactive game is based on running the slalom gates. More touch-screen displays explain the development of alpine skiing and ski equipment, history of snowboarding and the pioneers of freestyle skiing. A final exhibit covers snow safety with a video of an avalanche. The Alf Engen Ski Museum was built to preserve the rich history of skiing in the Intermountain region by providing a world-class facility, which highlights the many contributions made in ski area development, athletic competition, snow safety, ski innovation and ski teaching techniques.
