    General Cross-Country Information
W atch our woods fill up with snow. Here in Montana, cross-country skiing isn't like a quick trip around your back yard. (Unless you have a very big back yard.) We have hundreds of trails in two national parks, nine national forests, 12 wilderness areas as well as numerous lodges and resorts with private trail systems, there's plenty of room for everyone. Some of America's premier cross-country resorts are in Montana, offering you guided wilderness and wildlife tours, perfectly groomed trails and expert instruction. Ski or skate on groomed tracks, or choose from hundreds of miles of ungroomed trails on public lands. Take a guided wildlife tour or rent a remote forest service cabin and ski into it with your bed and board on your back. Montana's privately owned cross-country ski resorts celebrate winter providing comfortable accommodations that range from snug cabins to full-service lodges. Many people don't think of going to Glacier National Park or Yellowstone National Park in the winter. That in itself is a good reason for you to go; you may have acres of white backcountry all to yourself. THE PARKS IN WINTER
F or an unrivaled winter experience, visit Yellowstone or Glacier National Parks. These rugged and pristine lands offer spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing and endless opportunities for winter adventure.

    http://www.nemasters.org/
New England Masters Skiing The Sise Cup The great philosopher, Bode Miller, once said "Days like this make you wonder why everyone doesn't want to be a ski racer." If you're a ski racer you know what he's talking about. Ten seconds and four turns later, you're flying, full tilt boogie! Skis way up on edge, arcing across the ice. Your hip almost skims the snow in each turn, gates thwap against your shoulders! Again and again you roll 'em over, way out to the side. You wonder if your skis will hold, but you trust them, and incredibly, they keep carving. Every turn a risk and a reward, you accelerate into and out of the fall line. Now your legs and lungs are burning, but the course straightens and you grab a tuck, roll into a couple more turns, keep the hands up, skis flat, head down, until you see the finish line flash under your skis. WHOOOEEE! That was FUN! Yeah! At the scoreboard, big grins all around. Your time? It doesn't matter. The race is its own reward, and everyone here knows it. And, there's another run after lunch! Ski racing at its best is all about the love of the sport, and Masters is ski racing at its best. No racing career to worry about, no parents' or coaches' expectations to live up to; just the racing. And there's always another race.

    Beginner Skiing - General Information
Trip Orientation, Clothing and Equipment Hints A Conversational Guide for Parents
"Going Skiing!" - probably one of the most popular activities that Scouts do (and with reason - it's a lot of fun!) Troop 111 has been going skiing for at least 20 years, and perhaps even longer than that. During that time frame, we have taught at least 250 novices how to ski - and your son is next! Fear not - every Scout has returned a skier (and so will yours.) Our beginner training/preparation has three parts: (1) An "Indoor Orientation Course" held here at the Scout Hall between 2 and 4 weeks ahead of time; (2) Properly equipping your son for the expected/possible weather conditions (your job, but discussed in detail below); and (3) Basic instruction at the resort by experienced Adults and Senior Scouts (and rarely, by formal ski instructors at the resorts.) Now for an overview: Locations - For Troops in Northern Virginia, day trips are limited to western Virginia, West Virginia, western Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. There are about a dozen decent slopes within a four hour drive, with the closest being about 90 minutes away. Of course, the further you're willing to drive, the more likely you'll run into excellent conditions - and nothing's worse than driving to a resort only to find slush or ice. Note that all the following comments refer to these dozen ("local") resorts. Time frames Now why this lecture?

    http://faculty.washington.edu/mtuggy/geninfo1.htm
General Injury Information For the details of the methods of the study and data summary, please refer to an article due out in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Vol 28:1, pp83-89. authored by Michael Tuggy and Ric Ong. How often do we get hurt? Another way of looking at injuries is called Survival Analysis. This is expressed in median number of days to injury or how many days of skiing can we get away with before half of us are injured. This method allows for multivariate analysis of different risk factors and can tell us which are more likely to be significant with relatively smaller numbers. The table below shows the survival analysis comparing plastic and leather boots: Location of injuries. The graph on the left illustrates the percent of injuries sustained in various sites and the type of injury. Sprains of various joints are the most common type of injury and most heal within a month. I have received more reports of lower leg fractures but most of these have been associate with collisions with a fixed object (tree or post), not a boot top fracture that is common in alpine skiers. Thumb injuries have been reported at higher rates than in the past years. Though similar to the data obtained from the Web respondants, there are some differences in distribution of injuries between the two groups that are not statistically significant. It appear that thumb and ankle injuries are less prominent in the Web survey data but is similar to the pattern one expects when correcting for the level of skiers responding to the web survey.
