1. Backcountry Skiing: General Info And Disclaimer
Backcountry skiing general Info and Disclaimer and require a high degree of ski experience as well as general backcountry experience.
http://www.bobskiing.com/skiinfo.htm
Most of the tours listed at this site are best classified as "ski mountaineering", and require a high degree of ski experience as well as general backcountry experience. A few of the trips require advanced mountaineering experience. Most of these tours also include some degree of avalanche hazard. Backcountry ski mountaineering is physically demanding, requires specialized skills, and it's pretty gear-intensive too. Preparing you for backcountry ski trips is far beyond the scope of this web site. However, the following list is a good start. This may seem like a lot of tough prerequesites. Preparing for backcountry skiing takes years of commitment. But it's worth it. To me, there is no richer experience than to be on skis in the High Sierra backcountry. Watch for Snow Slippers!
  • Develop very strong backcountry skills . Do plenty of summer backpacking, perhaps including some travel far away from trails. Master topo map reading and compass skills, and never venture into the backcountry without topo map(s) and a compass.
  • You should have very solid ski technique . You should have an efficient diagonal stride. Be able to make strong telemark and parallel turns. Practice at downhill resorts, and practice in difficult snow conditions. A steep remote slope (with a 40-pound pack) isn't the best place to learn ski technique.

If you are a novice or your limited skiing career goes back a long way, this page will be useful. For the seasoned skier it will be thoroughly boring. The following is some general information about learning to ski, types of ski`s, boot`s and slopes. Run Types: The types of runs you generally encounter are colour coded, although not all the countries of the world use exactly the same classification. Using the example of the French Alps (arguably one of the finest skiing areas in the World). Their run classifications are green, blue, red and black, with green being the easist and black the hardest. However, on occassions the runs seem to be marked wrongly, blues appear to be reds, some reds appear to be blues the greens seem to go uphill (very hard for the novice skier to deal with) Your technical ability usually dictates which runs you should attemp. For first timers green runs (providing they are marked correctly, don't be too shy to ask if you are not sure). For those that have skiied for a week or so the blue, perhaps trying some shallow reds. After two weeks you should manage all blues and most reds after three weeks. Black runs must eventually be tackled if you are to get the true adrenalin rush, they come in varying degrees of impossibility or so it looks when you first go. Do discuss with a qualified and experienced Instructor, what level of black you might attempt first, some are far easier than others. The width of the piste can be severely tight and this means you may find yourself skiing next to the edge of a cliff or rocks and trees.

Arizona's White Mountains
Alpine Ranger District
Cross Country Information ~ Alpine Ranger District. Few places offer as much trouble-free skiing enjoyment as the Alpine Ranger District. Here in the midst of Arizona's picturesque White Mountains all you have to do is park your car, strap on your skis and go. You don't have to stand in line to buy a trail pass, and you don't have to elbow your way through crowds of other skiers. The deep snow pack turns the forest roads and trails that branch off US 191 (formerly US 666) into a network of ski trails that lead into the forest from the highway. For access, there are a number of convenient plowed turnouts for parking (especially in the Hannagan Meadows and Williams Valley areas). On these high country trails you can ski for a day or pack up your four-season tent and a pack full of food and be gone for a week. If you have the time, you might want to set out for a backcountry designation such as the broad meadows and high slopes of Escudilla, the third highest mountain in Arizona, or the inner reaches of the Bear Wallow Wilderness. Wherever you go be ready for untracked mountain meadows, deep silent forests, and miles and miles of alpine scenery. The secret's in the snow (and the Scenery) You would expect a place with the word "alpine" in its name to have great snow, and in the case of the Alpine District of the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest, you would be absolutely right. Much of the district ranges in altitude between 8,000 and 9,000 feet, which means that the snow that falls here is dry, deep, and cold-some of the best in the southwest. The weather's great too (except when it's storming). During winter the days are frequently bright and sunny. The air is always crisp and clean. And you'll never see a bluer sky than an Alpine Arizona sky, especially when you see it through the stark white limbs of a grove of high county aspen.

16. Snow Skiing Recreation Nordic Cross Country Victoria Australia
General information, XC tips, trail maps and suggested tours for cross country touring and nordic racing in North East Victoria, Australia. Falls Creek is the main entry point for back country skiing into the Alpine National Park.
http://home.connexus.net.au/~kiewa/cross_country.htm
Cross Country / Nordic Skiing
Victoria has a huge area of alpine country suitable for cross country skiing in winter, greater than the European Alps. The very best of this, is the sprawling expanse of hills, valleys and broad ridges of the Bogong High Plains. A number of mountains rise out of this plain and the area is dotted with historical cattle men's huts. This area is easily accessible from Falls Creek. Falls Creek resort itself has the unique Nordic Bowl. This is a sheltered area of flat and gentle slopes ideal for cross country ski learning and tuition and cross country race training. It is also a rallying point for ski tourers heading out into the national park. From Windy Corner, it is an easy ski of less than one kilometer to the Nordic Bowl. Within the resort there is a network of 20 km of groomed cross country trails and this is the key location in Victoria for cross country ski racing. The total groomed trails available from Falls Creek is between 30-60 km at any given time. Falls Creek is also the site of Australia's premier international cross country skiing event. The
