Speed skating
b. March 18, 1964, Cornwall, NY
Other Resources Blair began in short-track speed skating, which has a whole pack of skaters racing around a track. When she was sixteen, she began Olympic style racing, in which only two skaters are on the track, racing against time rather than against one another. In 1982, Blair was advised to compete in Europe to sharpen her skills, but had difficulty raising money for the trip. The police department of Champaign, IL, where she was living, held a series of raffles and bake sales on her behalf, and Jack Sikma of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks donated $1,500 to the cause. Blair gained much-needed experience in Olympic style speed skating during her European tour. Blair won the U. S. indoor title in 1983, 1984, and 1986, and was the North American indoor champion in 1985. She became a definite Olympic contender by setting a world record of 39.43 seconds in the 500-meter event at the 1987 worlds. At the 1988 Olympics, Blair set another world record to win a gold medal in the 500-meter event. After winning the world over-all sprint title in 1989, she finished second in 1990 and third in 1991 and entered the 1992 Olympics as a favorite in the 500-meter and a strong contender in the 1,000-meter. She won both, becoming the first skater ever to win two consecutive gold medals in the 500-meter sprint, and she received the Sullivan Award as the nation's outstanding amateur athlete.

Rubinstein, Julian. Ballad of the Whiskey Robber: A True Story of Bank Heists, Ice Hockey, Transylvanian Pelt Smuggling, Moonlighting Detectives, and Broken Hearts Publishers Weekly
(August 23, 2004)
This story of a bank robber who captured a nation's sympathy in post-Communist Hungary is a rollicking tale told with glee and flair. Attila Ambrus sneaked over the border from Romania into Hungary in the waning days of Communist rule. After talking his way onto a Hungarian hockey team, he turned to robbery to make some cash in the Wild West atmosphere of the early 1990s in Eastern Europe. As journalist Rubinstein shows, Ambrus was quite good at it. Taking advantage of poor police work, he took in millions in Hungarian currency and became a headline-grabber. He managed to stay at large for several years while continuing in his role as a back-up goalie on the ice. Rubinstein has a knack for telling a good story, and he captures well both Ambrus's appeal and the atmosphere of the first few years of capitalism in Hungary Science and Technologies

OCL Update
To: Community Representatives From: Thomas Gallagher, Ph.D., Director
Office of Community Liaison
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Date: December 2004 NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR, OFFICE OF COMMUNITY LIAISON With the holiday season rapidly approaching, I am sure that many of you are preparing for travel, scheduling visits with family and friends and making other holiday plans. I hope that these preplanning efforts help to make your holidays more relaxing and enjoyable. Although NIH doesn't do holiday planning, we are continually preparing for future campus growth. These efforts are part of the 2003 NIH Campus Master Plan Update (MPU) that was presented to the NIH Community Liaison Council (CLC) at the October 21st meeting by NIH Master Planner Ronald Wilson. I will use this opportunity to tell you about the MPU and give you a brief report on the November CLC meeting, which consisted of a shuttle bus tour around campus to give CLC members an up-close and personal view of the various campus construction projects, including a special tour of the newly completed Clinical Research Center (CRC). The 2003 NIH MPU covers a 20-year planning period and coordinates the physical development on the NIH campus, helping to identify future requirements for personnel and facilities. Although 2023 might seem like it's in the far-distant future, it will be here before we know it and NIH is readying itself by making regular updates to its Master Plan. As Wilson explained in his presentation, the projects mentioned in the MPU and its associated Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), are guidelines that indicate the timing for potential development. He also stressed the fact that actual campus development depends on congressional and presidential policy decisions, NIH and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) priorities and federal budgeting.

Two profs coauthor biography of William Dean Howells Carl Dawson and Susan Goodman 11:14 a.m., June 28, 2005William Dean Howells, though largely over-shadowed since his death in 1920 by contemporaries Mark Twain and Henry James, was widely regarded during his lifetime as the most influential American writer, according to a new book coauthored by two UD professors. In their recently published biography, Atlantic magazine during the tumultuous years of 1871-81, Howells also made a significant mark on American history as well as literature, and he left a legacy greater than what his largely forgotten body of work might imply. To streamline the vast quantity of information gleaned from archives in more than 40 libraries, Goodman and Dawson passed each section of the book back and forth between them several times before committing it to final-draft status.

Update with Jordan Brauninger by Sylvia An Unseen Skaters special. January 2, 2004. Jordan Brauninger, 16, qualified for this year's ISU Junior Grand Prix Final in Sweden by winning the gold medal in Mexico City and placing 4th in Japan. The 2003 Junior Men's silver medalist will make his Senior debut at 2004 Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia, January 3-10. He is coached by Stephanie Miller and Ted Masdea in Crescent Springs, Kentucky. This is Brauninger's second interview with Unseen Skaters - the one from a year ago, before 2003 Nationals, can be read here You started working with a new choreographer, Tom Dickson, this past summer. Did he pick out your program music and explain his reasoning to you?
Tom picked out the short program music, "Summertime" from , performed by Kenny G. Surprised me to no end that I really liked it. I mean Kenny G.? The program has turned into a bit of a Fosse (as in Bob) style number with some pretty sexy choreo. I think Tom wanted to see if I could dance a bit. The Patton music was kinda thrust upon him, but he did a great job giving me a program that builds all the way to the end. All my long programs have been classical since juvenile, so this is my first movie soundtrack. And besides that, I liked old George [General Patton]. He was a tough S.O.B.
