Amie Allnutt

Amie Allnutt, a member of Redwood Artistic Club in Redwood City, is a Regional competitor in Sophomore Pairs with partner, Andy Minieri. Amie also competes freestyle events. A student at Del Mar High School in San Jose, Amie began skating only seven years ago when her mother started her in "star" (beginner) classes. She enjoys skating for the space and freedom she feels when she skates and for the opportunity it gives her to keep in shape while having fun. When not skating, Amie can be found hanging out with friends or participating in school activities. Logan Boggs
Antoine Brooks

Antoine Brooks, a coach at Redwood Artistic Club in Redwood City, has been skating for "years," although, he declines to say just how many. During his competitive career, he made finals at Regionals and at Gold Skate Classics with his splashy jumping style. In addition to Artistic skating, Antoine played professional roller hockey with the Sacramento River Rats, and still plays for enjoyment and coaches. He also has started coaching Artistic skaters at Santa Clara. He is drawn to the concentration skating requires and to the challenge. He enjoys pushing the limits. When not on skates, Antoine can be found on a softball field, playing basketball or snowboarding - if it's a sport, he's probably into it.

Helen Billings Burnham, a one-time real estate woman with no legal training who spent 22 years dispensing justice, sometimes from her family room, as a part-time, round-the-clock town justice in Salina, N.Y., died Feb. 12 at her home in Mattydale, a suburb of Syracuse. She was 81 and had retired in 1993.
As a judge who never went to law school, Mrs. Burnham was hardly an anomaly. Only about a quarter of New York's 2,000 or so local court judges have law degrees.
Even so, when the Salina town board named her to succeed her husband, Richard, as town justice after Mr. Burnham was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1971, there were those who thought she did not belong on the bench.

Volume 22, Number 1 (1997)
reprinted by permission Oklahoma City University Law Review T HE C INEMATIC L AWYER : T HE M AGIC M IRROR AND THE S ILVER S CREEN R ENNARD S TRICKLAND Dean Strickland examines how the attorney and the legal profession have been depicted in film. The Article describes a wide genre of films dealing with lawyers, including comedies, westerns, film noir, and social dramas. Although often inaccurate, films dealing with law shape how most Americans view lawyers and our legal institutions. [The] law, wherein, as in a magic mirror, we see reflected, not only our own lives, but the lives of all men that have been! When I think on this magic theme, my eyes dazzle. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. saw the law as a "magic mirror" in which all of society was reflected. As we move toward the 21st century, it is increasingly clear that the law not only reflects but also dominates American life, so much so that little league outfielders and Olympic skaters turn to the courts to resolve their conflicts. Law dominates American life and culture in ways unimaginable to our founding fathers and certainly incomprehensible to the vast majority of our fellow citizens. As the 19th century French social observer Alex de Tocqueville noted, in America, sooner or later, all questions become legal ones.

News for the Smith College Community February 18, 1999
Archivists Savor Offbeat Queries On a typical day the staff at the Smith College Archives might be asked to provide anything from information about a student from the class of 1885 or the history of physical education to photographs of early Smith basketball uniforms or the campus as it looked from the air in 1935. Staff members never know what requests they'll get and that's one reason they relish their work. "I love it," says Nanci Young, the college archivist, who came to Smith last March from the archives of Princeton University. "I love bringing information to people. One of the joys of this job is seeing that spark in a student's eyes when she discovers that piece of information she's been looking for." No matter how obscure or obvious the request, Young, Archives Specialist Karen Eberhart and the other staff members approach it with efficiency and respect. "There are no dumb questions here," Young says though she admits to having been taken aback when a student recently asked whether the archives contained any information on women's education. Young says she's enthusiastic about and welcoming to every query she gets because the real gauge of the facility's success is its relationship with the college community. "A good relationship with our constituents is key," she says. "It can be a little daunting, all this information. People sometimes have very little understanding of what an archive is. We want to greet people with a friendly face."

Spotlight on Lenny Raney by Sylvia An Unseen Skaters special. December 14, 2003. How does it feel to qualify for your first "senior" nationals in your third season as a novice?
One word sums everything I've felt since qualifying, "FINALLY!!!" Can you summarize your skating so far this season, from summer and fall club competitions, to North Atlantic Regionals and Eastern Sectionals?
My season started off pretty well. I won everything I competed in up until Easterns, which includes NACS Lake Placid, Challenge Cup, Mid-Atlantics, and North Atlantic Regionals. Everything was progressing very well until right after Mid-Atlantics. In the beginning of October, I contracted tendonitis in my landing foot, which forced me to take off a week right before Norths, a week right before Easterns, and between the beginning of October and the week of Easterns, I couldn't train programs properly or practice upper-tier triple jumps. Talk about your bad luck! When and how did you begin skating and how?
I began when about when I was 9 years old. As to how, well, first I laced the rental skates on and then I stepped onto the ice... No, I'm playing, my grandmother thought it was such a pretty sport and I guess she wanted me to try... Little did she know...
