Paul was born in France. Isabelle was born in Canada. They were both raised in Canada and competed for same until they became dissatisfied with their progress. Feeling too restricted, they took advantage of Paul's dual citizenship and decided to compete for France in 1985, where success has brought them a rabid fan following. In the end, I find it totally irrelevant that they compete for France.

However, she faced her ultimate challenge as she competed with a serious foot injury in the 1956 Olympic Games. Despite her pain, she skated away with the top prize, becoming the first American woman to win a gold medal in Olympic figure skating. As Sports Illustrated for Women selected the top 100 female athletes of all time, writer Richard Deitsch reflected, "Few skaters have ever combined athleticism and artistic grace as successfully as Tenley Albright." pressure girls ideal ... social success Chapter 2: The Pressure to Be Thin TEENAGERS TODAY ARE surrounded by images of slenderness. They turn on the television or pick up magazines and see beautiful people who are also thin. The diet industry is a $40 billion business and growing. Magazines are filled with articles on counting calories and losing weight, not to mention advertisements glorifying thin bodies. Both boys and girls feel society’s pressures to have perfect bodies. But there is a difference. Boys are given more leeway in how they look. They are taught to value their bodies for what they can do and themselves for what they can achieve. Not that boys are problem free. They can develop eating disorders when they try to mold their bodies to reach a specific sports ideal. In addition, men today are expected to be slimmer, more muscular, and more youthful. And like women, increasing numbers of young men are developing eating disorders.

by Alfred Lansing In the summer of 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton set off aboard the Endurance bound for the South Atlantic. The goal of his expedition was to cross the Antarctic overland, but more than a year later, and still half a continent away from the intended base, the Endurance was trapped in ice and eventually was crushed. For five months Shackleton and his crew survived on drifting ice packs in one of the most savage regions of the world before they were finally able to set sail again in one of the ship's lifeboats. Alfred Lansing's Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage is a white-knuckle account of this astounding odyssey. Oztrack Ice Skating Bookshop

Review by Irene Gordon.
Not only will Super Skaters be of great interest to avid figure skating fans, but it will also be very useful for school research projects. The book is introduced by a history of figure skating, from the first use of animal bones as skate blades some 4000 years ago, to the use of metal blades in Holland in the 14th Century, to the founding of the first skating club in the world in Scotland around 1650, to the present. As well, there is a description of how skaters prepare their programs, illustrated explanations of how the various jumps are done, a listing of the Olympic gold medalists in the four skating disciplines (men's, women's, pairs and ice dance), and an explanation of how competitions are judged. "As more and more people in Europe and North America discovered the pleasures of skating, they began to skate together on ponds and lakes. The first skating club in the world, the Edinburgh Skating Club in chilly Scotland, came into being around 1650. To join the club, you had to be able to skate in a circle on one foot, then on the other foot, then jump over a pile of three hats. Perhaps these tricky exercises could be considered the first skating competition. "(Page 3)

Skaters-Biography.
Skating. Grades 5 and up / Ages 10 and up. Review by Lorraine Douglas. excerpt: These are times for greatness. They are trying times, too, for figure skating is dealing with new scoring systems, new structures and new challenges. But in the midst of turmoil, great skating still shines. And the list of talented skaters sparkles with new names. In each section. the biggest stars, like Evgeny Plushenko, Sasha Cohen, Shen and Zhao, and Bourne and Kraatz, are given several pages for their biographies. Their write ups include personal quotes as well as describing how they started skating and overcame challenges to achieve their dreams. Steve Milton, a sports writer, has a highly readable and energetic style. Sidebars provide vital information like birth dates, coaches, choreographers, etc., and some special tidbits of information are bulleted. There is a complete listing of the stars' standings in recent competitions. There are over 25 individual skaters featured as well as ten pairs teams and 13 ice dance couples. The shorter biographies are often one page in length accompanied with a striking photograph. These artists include the Canadian Jeff Buttle who was runner-up to Plushenko at Skate Canada 2003, a number of talented Chinese skaters like Chengjiang Li, and dancers Grushina and Goncharov.

Take a graceful 21-year-old champion who is hungry for gold and add two feisty, talented teenagers. What do you get? A cutting-edge U.S. women's figure-skating team that has a chance of snagging gold, silver and bronze medals in Salt Lake City. Michelle Kwan is an Olympic veteran, but she has yet to win a gold. In 1994, she was an alternate and did not get to skate. Four years later, she placed second to teammate Tara Lipinski. "In '98, after the Olympics, I remember wondering, 'That was it' " says Kwan. As six-time national champion, Kwan is the favorite, but that doesn't scare Sasha Cohen, 17. "Whether it's realistic or not," says Cohen, "I always want the gold." At the U.S. Nationals in January, she settled for silver. Cohen doesn't plan on settling again. She hopes to be the first woman to land a daring jump known as a quadruple Salchow in competition. That will take strength. Skaters land jumps with a force of up to 10 times their body weight. Rounding out the U.S. team is Sarah Hughes, 16. Hughes, who is known for her consistency and grace under pressure, landed six triple jumps at the U.S. Nationals.

Some of the best skaters in Nagano, Japan, next month won't be wearing sparkling costumes or twirling in triple loops. They'll be decked out in helmets and pads, armed with wooden sticks. The U.S. Women's Hockey Team has one goal: to crush the world-champ Canadian women. Women's hockey is new to the Olympics. Unlike men's hockey, it allows no body checking (slamming into opponents). Instead, these women win with sharp skating and superfast slap shots. Many players, like forward Sandra Whyte of Massachusetts, grew up playing hockey on boys' teams. "We play a fast game!" says Whyte. Send this story to a friend

And only a chosen few boast careers that last long enough for them to be considered working veterans. One artist that embodies longevity in hip-hop and who has reinvented himself, remaining fresh and current and standing fast against the rapidly changing winds, is Snoop Dogg. Born Calvin Broadus in Long Beach, Calif., Snoop Dogg came into the rap game as a proud representative of the West Coast. In 1992, when he first emerged the West Coast was known for giving birth to the careers of such rappers as Eazy E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Ice T. These artists had a clever, albeit hardcore, approach to rap and spewed lyrics that painted an often disturbing but very realistic picture of their lives.

Athlete San Bernardino Sun reporter Paul Oberjuerge, "that's more important than anything else."
Raced for Food
Parra grew up in San Bernardino's West Side neighborhood. His mother had departed when he was a toddler, and Parra's father worked as a prison guard to support him and his brother. As a kid, Parra and his older brother, Gilbert, loved to skate at the Stardust Roller Rink. Having no money for snacks, they began racing as a way to win food tickets from others. "We used to race for hot dogs and Cokes," Gilbert Parra told St. Petersburg Times
