Russell Freedman
It's not Babe Ruth, but Babe Didrikson Zahariasthe greatest woman athlete of all time. Few men, if any, have ever bested her feats in sports from track and field to golf. Babe broke barriers for women. Contrary to Aver Brundage's belief that women had no place in sports, Babe proved that women could sweat, succeed, set new records and still enjoy dancing at night. Freedman presents Babe as a complete and complex person. Terrific photos show her in action. She was a one-woman team! If Babe is the tops in sports, Freedman holds that same honor in the field of photobiography. His books are "must reads" for all ages. 1999, Clarion, Ages 10 up, $18.00. Reviewer: Jan Lieberman
ISBN: 0-3956-3367-2 The Best of the Best in Gymnastics
Rachel Rutledge Women gymnasts have always possessed precision, power and grace. But it was not until 1972 that a young Soviet athlete, Olga Korbut stepped into the Olympic spotlight and changed the face of the sport forever. Until Korbut, the stars of women's gymnastics were mature, conservative, technically sound veterans in the twenties or early thirties. Today's gymnasts are young risk-takers with a keen competitive spirit and a passion for perfection. This nonfiction book profiles eight of the world's best female gymnastsSimona Amanar, Vanessa Atler, Dominique Dawes, Ling Jie, Svetlana Khorkina, Kristen Maloney, Shannon Miller and Dominique Moceanu. Chapters giving a brief overview of the sport are also included. This is a great reference book for school or library, and or a gift book for the budding gymnast! It is part of the "Women of Sports" series. 1999, Millbrook Press, Ages 8 to 12, $22.90 and 6.95. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree

We race on our feet, in the air, over snow and ice, on bikes, boats and in airplanes, we race our next door neighbours for the most advanced satellite receivers or the biggest and noisiest lawn mower, we race our colleagues at work for more money and influence, we race the next door superpower for more and bigger warheads on our nuclear weapons. It's "The Human Race", and every time we reach our goal as the ultimate winner, we feel an undescribable joy.

PRINT PAGE EMAIL ARTICLE ) Font ( ) Font Causes for Concern: Immature Bones and Emotions : For Lipinski, Thin Ice Ahead By Ian Thomsen International Herald Tribune Wednesday, March 26, 1997 The smaller, younger girls were told to stand on the upper steps as if they were posing for a portrait. In fact, they were receiving their awards at the World Figure Skating Championships last weekend. The "ladies" gold medalist, Tara Lipinski, was by far the tiniest skater at the weeklong event, and at 14 she was its youngest champion of all time. For the next year leading up to the Winter Olympics, Lipinski will continue to receive three personal tutors at her home near Detroit, where she and her mother moved to be near her coach. She will practice skating for about five hours a day, five days a week, which seems to be as much as her developing joints and bones can handle. There is talk of her joining an ice tour this summer and earning more than $1 million for the year, with potentially $10 million to come if she prevails at the Olympics next winter in Nagano, Japan.

HELP FOR PARENTS OF: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
    Science is for everyone
In most every job or profession that people do today – from the retail store manager who tracks inventory with computer programs to technicians who draw blood for lab work – science and technology play important roles. For this reason, everyone needs to have a firm understanding of science and technology to compete in an ever-changing job market. To illustrate the importance of science to today’s elementary school students, here are some of the "When I grow up I want to be…" professions that now require a detailed knowledge of the same scientific concepts and tools that your child is learning to use every day at school: Auto mechanic – Though there is still a lot of hands-on work with grease and goo, auto mechanics now need a knowledge of technology to use many of the diagnostic tools (such as computer programs and computer-generated graphs) to determine what is wrong with your car and how best to fix it. Police officer – Behind the uniforms and fancy cars with shiny lights are people who use lots of scientific reasoning skills to do their jobs. Police use deductive reasoning as they gather facts and collect evidence for criminal cases and make accurate decisions based on what they see, hear, smell or touch. They use charts, tables, books and other facts to help make decisions and use computer technologies for such tasks as DNA and fingerprint identification.

    Skaters and autobiographies
Homophobia affects all male skaters, regardless of their personal sexual orientation. Many assume that all male skaters are gay; even when individual male skaters are known to be straight, they are frequently the target of anti-gay slurs just for being in the sport. When it comes to autobiography or authorized biography, male skaters have taken a number of approaches to this phenomenon. In a few cases, the silence has spoken loudly. Of the male skater autobiographies Rainbow Ice is aware of, only one, Icebreaker: the Autobiography of Rudy Galindo , with Eric Marcus, acknowledges the subject as gay. Another, Toller Cranston's Zero Tollerance , with Martha Lowder Kimball, describes a same-sex rendezvous, although Cranston does not identify as gay or bisexual. Of the other male skater autobiographies, there are a few which employ a curious "don't ask, don't tell" strategy. It cannot be easy to decide to collaborate with a writer on the story of one's life while omitting any mention of a love life whatsoever, but this is the choice made by Brian Orser in his 1988 book A Skater's Life with Steve Milton, and by the 1998 authorized biography
