Oct. 22, 1963- Figure skater. In addition to his Olympic gold medal, Brian Boitano has won four United States national championships and two world titles. Ironically, it was his loss to Orser in the 1987 world championships that marked the turning point in Boitano's career. Following that defeat, he hired the skating choreographer Sandra Bezic, who revamped his style, adding to his natural athletic gifts more artistry and emotion. That changeover had much to do with his Olympic triumph. The complete article can be found on the Current Biography CD-ROM and in the 1989 Current Biography Yearbook Search for another athlete HAMILTON, SCOTT
Aug. 28, 1958- Skater. Six weeks after his birth on August 28, 1958, Scott Hamilton was adopted by Ernest and Dorothy Hamilton, professors of, respectively, biology and family relations at Bowling Green [Ohio] State University. He has an older sister, Susan, and a younger brother, Steven, who is also adopted. When he was about two, Scott contracted a mysterious illness that caused him to stop growing. Tests indicated that the boy was, in effect, suffering from malnutrition because his body was not digesting and absorbing food properly, but his physicians were at a loss as to how to correct the condition. Although bedridden for the better part of the next few years, Scott "never really felt sick," as he recalled to Jane Leavy of the Washington Post (January 18, 1984). He "just felt short."

Biography Main America's Real Sweetheart: A Biography of Joan Crawford Part 1: Intro/Youth/Early Hollywood Part 2: MGM Height/Decline Part 3: Warners/Freelance Part 4: Grand Guignol/Last Years/Legacy Part 2: MGM Height and Decline MGM Height of Stardom: 1929 - 1937 Joan's professional ascension coincided with a personal one: Her new romance with a very eligible Hollywood bachelorDouglas Fairbanks, Jr., the son of silent-screen star Douglas Fairbanks. Fairbanks Sr. and second wife Mary Pickford were Hollywood royalty and an invitation to their home, Pickfair, was a guarantee that one had "arrived" socially in town. The couple were cool to Joan at first, but months after Joan and Doug Jr.'s marriage in June 1929, an invitation to Pickfair was finally forthcoming (after Britain's Lord Mountbatten specifically requested a meeting with Joan). While 1929 saw Joan busy trying on her more serious and subdued personality (less gum-chewing, fewer bows on her shoes and clothes, more reading of the books Doug recommended), there was also a seismic change afoot in the film industry: the advent of talking pictures. While the Talkies proved problematic for some non-English-speaking stars and those (such as Clara Bow and John Gilbert) whose voices didn't match their screen personas, Joan's sultry voice and looks were a perfect fit; she made the transition to sound easily and remained a fan favorite. MGM featured her in a song-and-dance number in their star-studded sound showcase

Children's tales can be so sweet and simple, and the story of figure skater and coach Mabel Fairbanks begins no differently. During New York City's cold winter days, she watched other youngsters skating on a small pond not far from Central Park's Harlem end. It looked like such fun, gliding gleefully and gracefully across sheets of iceso much so that it prompted her to buy a pair of cheap tubular figure skates. Never mind that they were two sizes too big! Exactly when Fairbanks first put on skates isn't clearmaybe somewhere between 1925 and 1928but the struggle she had on that little pond reportedly prompted an onlooker to suggest a larger, smoother ice surface in Central Park. Fairbanks walked there in the skates, and by the end of that season, she had taught herself the essentials of figure skating.

Other Resources Although overshadowed by the brilliant speed skating performances of her brother Eric, Heiden was a remarkable athlete who excelled in a number of sports. As a high school student, she starred in tennis and soccer and set a national age group record for the mile run. In 1979, she won world championships at all four speed skating distances, from 500 meters to 3,000 meters, and became the first American women to win the world overall championship. An ankle injury troubled her during the 1980 Olympics, where she won only one medal, a bronze in the 3,000-meter race. Like many speed skaters, Heiden competed in cycling as a means of off-season training. She won the U. S. and world road race championships, as well as the prestigious Coors International Classic, in 1980. She was named the U. S. Olympic Committee's Sportswoman of the Year and brother Eric won the men's award that year. Heiden took up cross-country skiing in 1981, while attending the University of Vermont. Two years later, she won the first NCAA women's championship in the sport.

The skateparks from yester-year are what set us apart from all the other skaters going along for the magic carpet ride. Sure we were the pros who set the standards for alot of stuff and empty backyard pools really got us all going but, the parks allowed us to practice our craft in a no-bust environment. This set us up for practicing every day and learning stuff for the early contests that really inspired millions in the days to come. Remember the A.S.P.O. series turned us on to each other's abilities and these contests brought all of us together in the first place. I met Brad Bowman this way along with Shreddie Repas at Skatercross in Reseda. I met Pineapple and Dave Andrecht in Spring Valley during one of our first trips there to ride a real pool made for skating. I saw Steve Olson , Arnie Hogue, and others at Skatopia in Buena Park. Give Till it Hurts
The Pipeline also offered "Gold Cards" so that rich parents of skaters near the park could pay up to $500 bucks to get their kids the first rides in the combi before us pros who donated even more money. This also allowed them unlimited access day or night to skate anywhere or anytime at the park.

He moved to Saskatoon at an early age, played hockey and became involved in speed skating because the rink was virtually across the street. He was a charter member of the Saskatoon Club in 1942 and among his souvenirs is a first-place certificate for the 440 yards in the Saskatoon speed skating championships of 1944. He was a member of a 1947 Lions Club team that included future Olympians Craig Mackay and Johnny Sands. He was appointed coach of the Lions Speed Skating Club in 1956 and he was coach of the Saskatchewan team at the first Canada Winter Games held in Quebec City in 1967. Eugene was secretary-treasurer and president of the Saskatchewan Amateur Speed Skating Association in the 1950s and, later in 1988, returned to the provincial executive as vice-president of officials. He has officiated at a number of world events, including the Canada Cup in Regina. During the 1980s, he was chief starter at the men's all-round championships in Hammar, Norway, chief starter for the world junior championships in Quebec City in 1986, and chief starter at the women's championships at Milwaukee in 1987. He was also an official at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Eugene has been honored on many occasions, including the Sask Sport Volunteer Award, Softball's Distinguished Service Award and the Dairy Producers Foundation Volunteer Award and his peers in the Canadian Speed Skating Association presented him with an award of excellence in 1987.

Ryan Moran- Drums Oguer Ocon -Congas, Percussion, Harp Throughout modern pop culture, melodic music representing the California lifestyle has always had its place (Beach Boys, Eagles, Grateful Dead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, Jack Johnson to name a few), and every era yields a definitive reggae-influenced rock band with HUGE breakthrough commercial success (The Clash, The Police, UB40, Sublime, Shaggy, etc.). SLIGHTLY STOOPID, a clear descendant of that lineage, is primed to be a breakout act of 2003! SLIGHTLY STOOPID possess a unique dynamic. They have a musical kinship so to speak, which is clearly the organic result of years growing up together in the setting of one of Southern California's premiere surf towns (Ocean Beach, San Diego), and the relentless pursuit of creating the quintessential soundtrack for the lifestyle that exists there. Miles and Kyle are perfect musical counterparts, complementing each other in the realm of electric and acoustic rock, reggae, dub, blues, hip-hop, punk, and metal. Boasting dual front men, SLIGHTLY STOOPID yield a rare chemistry as players. They are both multi-instrumental, oftentimes switching effortlessly from bass to guitar in the middle of their live shows, continuously balancing and bouncing their vocal stylings and fresh harmonies, and seemingly always converging into songs that are good enough to be respected by the very artists who inspire them.

    PART ONE: SCHOOL
Ward was the one with a scholarship. Ward is still the smartest member of the band. Ward also had a car in 10th grade and was the most popular geek that I knew. When we went to lunch in high school I would watch as Ward went from one side of the lunch area to the other, chatting with his friends as they followed him like little disciples. He had a blue jean jacket with "the Wall" emblazoned by hand (his) on the back. He had long hair and a winning smile. Ward was everyone's favorite, and I pretended to hate him just to be different until he came over to my house one day with a chessboard. Playing chess with Ward Williams made you cool. Evan went to the same school, too. He hung out with the skaters and was a vegetarian, much to Mom's chagrin. When he went to the North Carolina School of the Arts for the visual arts, he started wearing long scarves and floppy hats. He looked like a Toulouse-Lautrec painting. I didn't see him that much during school. I think that all little brothers have to go through a phase where they hide from their older siblings, and he did a good job.

    The Book as Critic
    by Kelly Tetterton
A paper presented to The Fifth Annual Virginia Woolf Conference at Otterbein College, June 18, 1995
The American Paperback Covers of Virginia Woolf's Orlando
As well-seasoned critics and readers, we are often accustomed to reading a text against itself, and Virginia Woolf's Orlando invites us to do so quite explicitly. The text asks us to reconsider the very notions of literature and sexuality that it itself seems so invested in. So far so good. But we are not accustomed to looking at the critical relationship between the physical book and the text we read, and in our failure to do so, we risk acquiescence to the reading of that text as it's been handed to us. I want to focus on Woolf's Orlando for several reasons: it is itself a complicated text to read, open to many interpretations, and publishers have felt quite free to exploit those various interpretations visually on the covers of the book; and because Woolf herself is a well-known author whose critical acceptance has always been inflected by her gender, and that too has spilled over onto the book's covers. Orlando the book has been packaged in distinctive ways throughout this century, and that packaging has recapitulated certain attitudes towards the text that have been cemented into potential blockades against other readings.

CHAPTER I. ORIGINS AND YOUTH Nothing better illustrates the elasticity of American democratic life than the fact that within a span of forty years Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were Presidents of the United States. Two men more unlike in origin, in training, and in opportunity, could hardly be found. Lincoln came from an incompetent Kentuckian father, a pioneer without the pioneer's spirit of enterprise and push; he lacked schooling; he had barely the necessaries of life measured even by the standards of the Border; his companions were rough frontier wastrels, many of whom had either been, or might easily become, ruffians. The books on which he fed his young mind were very few, not more than five or six, but they were the best. And yet in spite of these handicaps, Abraham Lincoln rose to be the leader and example of the American Nation during its most perilous crisis, and the ideal Democrat of the nineteenth century. Theodore Roosevelt, on the contrary, was born in New York City, enjoyed every advantage in education and training; his family had been for many generations respected in the city; his father was cultivated and had distinction as a citizen, who devoted his wealth and his energies to serving his fellow men. But, just as incredible adversity could not crush Abraham Lincoln, so lavish prosperity could not keep down or spoil Theodore Roosevelt.
