HOME E-MAIL FORUM activism ... tv Articles Rudy Galindo Biography While he was not the first skater to be out while competing, it was Rudy Galindo's spectacular underdog success in 1996, weeks after coming out in Christine Brennan's book Inside Edge, that first brought the words "openly gay skater" to news broadcasts and major newspapers. Since his rise to prominence, Galindo has participated in many gay community events and has had to decline many more. On March 1, 2000, Galindo tested positive for HIV. As a survivor of the AIDS-related deaths of his brother and two coaches, he has seen the worst the disease can do. But in his typically forthcoming manner, on April 5, 2000, in an interview with Christine Brennan for USA Today, he became the first skater to acknowledge having HIV while still professionally active. On January 12, 1999, Galindo had a cameo as himself (with lines) on the gay-themed NBC sitcom Will and Grace, with a plotline centering around an evening with Champions on Ice. The episode was called "Will on Ice." Will's friends bond over their favorite skaters Michelle Kwan, Surya Bonaly, and Galindo, whom one character calls "my hero he's the gay one!" To which another character responds, "One?" On December 12, 1998, Galindo became the first skater broadcast on a U.S. television network doing a specifically gay-themed program, "Over the Rainbow" (covered by Melissa Manchester), skated at the USFSA's Keri Lotion Figure Skating Classic pro-am. Galindo used a sequined rainbow flag as part of his costume, and commentator Dick Button explained matter-of-factly that it was "the symbol of the gay and lesbian movement."

Fabiola da Silva Oliveira Samoes Da Silva is a female inline skater. She was born on 6/18/79, in Sao Paulo, Brazil where she grew up. Fabiola is currently living in California. She began competing in 1996 and is a pioneer for all female skaters because the ASA made up a very important challenge which was if any feamle could place in the top 10 among the male skaters in an ASA street competion, then females will be allowed to compete with the men permanently. Not only did she place in the top 10 but she placed third. Her style used to be a little skatchey but now she is one of the best. Rudy Galindo's "Studio 54," skated at "Ice Wars" and televised on CBS, November 27, 1999, is the most disliked skating program in U.S. cyberspace this season. With few exceptions, public reaction has been negative, to the extent that according to News on the official Rudy Galindo website , the program has been retired. The Program What does this program actually look like? Set to a high-energy medley of familiar disco tunes from the "Studio 54" soundtrack, it was intended as a "fun" rather than "technical" number, designed to get the audience to participate by clapping along. Many of the sampled songs have been staples in gay dance clubs. The program started out with a triple toe-triple toe combination, a triple salchow, and a single axel (it should have been a double, but Galindo's efforts to re-train a triple axel appear to have affected his timing on axel jumps). The rest of the program mainly consisted of Galindo dancing on skates, showing that unlike some skaters who attempt, less convincingly, to skate club dance-like programs he really does go out dancing in real life. At one point, Galindo wiggled his butt for the camera; at another point, he (briefly) framed his crotch with his hands. He paused by the boards to sprinkle glitter on some spectators. His dancing was adept and also undeniably sexual, in an irony-tinged fashion that is typical of gay men on the "flamer" end of the butch-femme spectrum. Of the spectators visible on TV, some appeared to "get it" with enjoyment; others looked distinctly uncomfortable.

Kurt has received his country's highest civilian honor, the Order of Canada. He has twice been named Canadian Athlete of the Year and has been inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. He was also elected to the Canadian Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1999, and inducted in 2000. Kurt Browning is credited with completing the first quadruple jump in competition, for which he is listed in the Guinness Book of Records. He served as Honorary Chairman of the 1996 World Figure Skating Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, (Where the ISU President, Octavio Chinquanta, would not allow him to skate in Opening Ceremonies, but relented to protests for the closing.) and was simultaneously honored with a biographical exhibit at the Alberta Provincial Museum entitled: "From Child To Champ". Kurt's autobiography, Forcing the Edge, was a Canadian National bestseller, and he contributed two essays to Steve Miltons book, Skate Talk. The skater has been featured in the following home videos: "JUMP!" "INSIGHTS INTO CANADA'S GREATEST SKATING STARS", "GET WHAT YOU NEED!" and "LIFE AFTER HOCKEY". Kurt was also the subject of "A LIFE ON THE EDGE," a documentary by the National Film Board of Canada.
