Athlete San Bernardino Sun reporter Paul Oberjuerge, "that's more important than anything else."
Raced for Food
Parra grew up in San Bernardino's West Side neighborhood. His mother had departed when he was a toddler, and Parra's father worked as a prison guard to support him and his brother. As a kid, Parra and his older brother, Gilbert, loved to skate at the Stardust Roller Rink. Having no money for snacks, they began racing as a way to win food tickets from others. "We used to race for hot dogs and Cokes," Gilbert Parra told St. Petersburg Times

Amie Allnutt

Amie Allnutt, a member of Redwood Artistic Club in Redwood City, is a Regional competitor in Sophomore Pairs with partner, Andy Minieri. Amie also competes freestyle events. A student at Del Mar High School in San Jose, Amie began skating only seven years ago when her mother started her in "star" (beginner) classes. She enjoys skating for the space and freedom she feels when she skates and for the opportunity it gives her to keep in shape while having fun. When not skating, Amie can be found hanging out with friends or participating in school activities. Logan Boggs
Antoine Brooks

Antoine Brooks, a coach at Redwood Artistic Club in Redwood City, has been skating for "years," although, he declines to say just how many. During his competitive career, he made finals at Regionals and at Gold Skate Classics with his splashy jumping style. In addition to Artistic skating, Antoine played professional roller hockey with the Sacramento River Rats, and still plays for enjoyment and coaches. He also has started coaching Artistic skaters at Santa Clara. He is drawn to the concentration skating requires and to the challenge. He enjoys pushing the limits. When not on skates, Antoine can be found on a softball field, playing basketball or snowboarding - if it's a sport, he's probably into it.

Matthew Lind > Senior Men 2002 US National Junior Mens' Pewter Medalist Matthew "Matt" Lind, who was born February 24, 1983, began in-line skating in 1994 and tried his hand at ice skating for the first time not long afterward. He showed talent from the start, learning many skills before he he’d ever taken a single lesson, and he had soon started on the competitive road that would eventually lead to success at the elite level. Often one of the tallest competitors in any given event at 6’1”, Lind has avoided the awkward style that plagues many long-limbed skaters and instead has achieved unusually elegant line and presentation. He has faced the hurdle of financial troubles that have led to his training for long periods of time without a coach, making his technical and artistic advancements even more impressive. Despite a disappointing finish at the 2002 Eastern sectionals, where he finished just one spot shy of a trip to nationals in his first season at the senior level, Lind is committed to his future in skating. He enjoys theatre, the music of the Goo Goo Dolls and Lifehouse, and watching Saturday Night Live, and is a longtime close friend of world-class competitor Jennifer Kirk. His dedication to skating in the face of his difficulties has made Lind one of the most interesting up-and-coming competitors in U.S. skating today.
