Henri Matisse Biography
Henri Emile Benoit Matisse Matisse originally studied law in Paris. In 1890, after becoming ill, he started to paint. Matisse studied at the Academie Julian Paris in 1892 under Bouguereau (see The First Kiss, 1873 ) and then under Gustave Moreau in 1892-6, through whom he met the artists Marquet Manguin and Rouault
Early Influences
Discovering impressionism and the post impressionist painters Pissarro Cezanne Van Gough (see Sunflowers, 1888 Gaugin and William Turner (see Venice, 1840 ), Matisse experimented with divisionist techniques In 1899 he bought the Three Bathers from Cezanne whom he greatly admired and in 1904 became interested in the works of Georges Pierre Seurat , a Parisian painter famous for his coloured dot work. He also befriended Paul Signac the Pointillist painter.
Free and Easy Style, Exploding with Colour
In 1905 Matisse worked in Collioure, a small fishing village in the South of France with his friend Andre Derain. His painting developed a free and easy style, exploding with vibrant colour, no doubt influenced by the bright light and colourful everyday surroundings Matisse is said to have got the idea for the painting The Dance, 1910

Other Resources Figure skating was a stiff, even awkward exercise in its early years. Skaters simply performed figures with no attempt at grace or style. Haines changed all that. After studying dance in Europe as a young teen-ager, he returned to the United States when he was seventeen and he began to incorporate dance movements into skating with musical accompaniment. His ideas met with little enthusiasm until he founded a skating school in Vienna in 1863. Haines' colorful, theatrical approach to figure skating became known as the "international style." Among his many pupils was Louis Rubinstein of Canada, who popularized the style in North America. Haines died in Finland and was buried there. His tombstone refers to him as "The American Skating King."

    Artist: J.J. Barnes

    Styles: Soul Motown Northern Soul
In 1960, when he was 17, Barnes cut his first single, "My Love Came Tumbling Down" b/w "Won't You Let Me Know," for Kable Records, which did nothing but add "recording artist" to Barnes' resumé. This was not a title to take lightly a few spins on the radio enabled an artist to jack their price up at the neighborhood club. No longer was he, J.J. Barnes, appearing Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights; now J.J. Barnes, the recording artist, was appearing live and in person.
Mickay Records issued four singles by Barnes; the first, "Just One More Time" (1963), is sought after by Northern soul fanatics. Scepter Records realized its potential and plucked it for national distribution, but the sales never amounted to much. "These Chains of Love," "Teenage Queen," and "So Far Away" all released in 1963 and 1964 were good efforts that few heard. He cut one record for Ring Records in 1964, "Poor Unfortunate Me" b/w "She Ain't Ready."
Motown released Barnes from his contract and he hooked up with Don Davis again, scoring the first time on Groovesville Records with "Baby Please Come Back Home." Its successor, "Now That I Got You Back" b/w "Forgive Me" (1967), a stomper and a pleader, threw a rod at number 44. The third, "Sweet Sherry," with the Originals harmonizing behind Barnes, didn't sell despite its immense charm. Then came "Easy Living" b/w "I've Lost You," with backing vocals by the Holidays, on the Groove City label, which sank upon release. A stint on Revilot Records resulted in four singles, including "Our Love Is in the Pocket," a popular Northern soul song. Barnes co-wrote his final Revilot single, "So Called Friends" (1969), with George Clinton (Parliament) and two unknown brothers by the last name of Taylor.

The goal of his expedition was to cross the Antarctic overland, but more than a year later, and still half a continent away from the intended base, the Endurance was trapped in ice and eventually was crushed. For five months Shackleton and his crew survived on drifting ice packs in one of the most savage regions of the world before they were finally able to set sail again in one of the ship's lifeboats. The newsletter of the MIT Figure Skating and Ice Dance Clubs February 1998 MIT FSC SCORES IN INTERCOLLEGIATE COMPETITION FOURTH COMPETITION ANOTHER SUCCESS On February 7 the MIT FSC once again hosted a USFSA-sanctioned intercollegiate competition. The event was a model of efficiency, professionalism, punctuality, and, especially, a great deal of fun. Gold medals with diamond inlays are due to co-organizers Bonny Kellerman and Dick Gori. There is an enormous amount of work to be done to bring off such a competition, and their efforts were irreplaceable. A carload of silver medals is owed to the small crowd of club members who helped on the day of the competition, completing the success begun by Bonny and Dick. Keep in mind that this was a real competition, with USFSA judges, officials who arrived with a computer, results printed out and posted in the lobby as the scores were tallied, and at the end, a ceremony with podium and classy medals. First class all the way. Don't miss the next one! MIT SKATERS FINISH IN THE MONEY MIT's competition day began with a graceful program skated by Jodi Beggs, giving her a second-place finish in the compulsory junior event.

You're challenging people to leave their niche, to leave their predetermined ideas of what they're supposed to like. Luckily, we have a lot of people who just focus on the music and appreciate us for what we are. So we get fans from all different genres of music, the jocks, the spooky kids, skaters, college kids, punk rockers, hardcore kids, metal kids, all that" - Davey Havok The origins and history of AFI are as humble as they are passionate, beginning with the meaning and philosophy behind the acronym now known to an ever-growing legion of fans the world over: A Fire Inside. Over 10 years on and counting, the same inner flame that fueled four teenagers making a primal noise in a Ukiah, Calif., garage has propelled AFI to unforeseen musical and professional levels, as evident on Sing The Sorrow, due out March 11, 2003, on DreamWorks Records. "We've been doing this for a long time, and we love it more than anything," says AFI singer Davey Havok"To play music you're passionate about every night - it's like a dream. Sometimes you get sick; sometimes you get really tired, but I can't imagine doing anything else with my life"

Fairbanks Sr. and second wife Mary Pickford were Hollywood royalty and an invitation to their home, Pickfair, was a guarantee that one had "arrived" socially in town. The couple were cool to Joan at first, but months after Joan and Doug Jr.'s marriage in June 1929, an invitation to Pickfair was finally forthcoming (after Britain's Lord Mountbatten specifically requested a meeting with Joan). While 1929 saw Joan busy trying on her more serious and subdued personality (less gum-chewing, fewer bows on her shoes and clothes, more reading of the books Doug recommended), there was also a seismic change afoot in the film industry: the advent of talking pictures. While the Talkies proved problematic for some non-English-speaking stars and those (such as Clara Bow and John Gilbert) whose voices didn't match their screen personas, Joan's sultry voice and looks were a perfect fit; she made the transition to sound easily and remained a fan favorite. MGM featured her in a song-and-dance number in their star-studded sound showcase

    Lar Lubovitch
    Birth: April 9, 1943
    Nationality: American
    Occupation: dancer, choreographer, company director
One of modern dance's most eclectic emissaries, Lar Lubovitch has created dances in a variety of arenas, earning both kudos and criticism for his work. Choreographing prolifically for his own company and others since 1968, Lubovitch has gained a reputation for a free-flowing, music-driven style that has made his work popular with audiences and has polarized critics. He has produced more than 50 dances for his New York-based Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, which celebrated its 30th anniversary season in 1998. In addition, almost since the outset of his career, Lubovitch has created dances for other companies, often ballet companies seeking to update their repertories. His works have been performed by the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project, and others.
Since the mid-1980s, Lubovitch has further diversified, creating ice dances for Olympic champion skaters and providing choreography for Broadway musicals. He received a Tony Award nomination for his Broadway debut in 1987 with the musical staging of the Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine show "Into the Woods." And in 1994, his ballet for the short-lived Broadway musical version of "The Red Shoes" was judged the only redeemable part of that show. The 18-minute ballet survives in the repertory of American Ballet Theatre.

Lubovitch continued to choreograph for his company and others in the 1990s, with notable commissions from the Paris Opera Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, White Oak Dance Project, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In 1993 he joined the creative team revamping the classic 1948 movie THE RED SHOES for the stage. While the show was a flop (folding after 51 previews and five performances), critics lauded Lubovitch's choreography for the culminating ballet. Vincent Canby wrote in the NEW YORK TIMES, "With astonishing grace and wit, the ballet dramatized just about all that needs to be said about the sometimes obsessive nature of artists and the bargains they make with life."
For the next several years Lubovitch's energies were increasingly tapped for the commercial theater and ice dancing ventures. In 1994 he choreographed a new version of "Oklahoma!" for the London stage. In 1996 he choreographed two new dances and oversaw the recreation of Jerome Robbins' original choreography for the Broadway revival of "The King and I."
He'd begun working on the ice in 1984 with JOHN CURRY: DANCE ON ICE and continued that interest with a full-length "Sleeping Beauty" on ice for television in 1987. In 1994 he choreographed Gustav Holst's "The Planets" for a television production featuring French skaters Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay that was nominated for an International Emmy Award and a Grammy Award.
