> Senior Dance 2001 US National Junior Dance Bronze Medalists Sister-brother ice dance teams aren’t common in senior level competitions, but Kakani and Ikaika Young are making it work. The two skaters were born in Honolulu, HI, and grew up in Oregon City, OR. They began skating at the ages of five and four respectively, and both competed in singles until a bad fall on a jump left Ikaika injured. The siblings gave up solo skating in order to compete in dance, and in 1997, they moved to Mountlake Terrace, WA, to pursue their goals. Training under Bernard Ford and Sharon Jones-Baker, Kakani and Ikaika have become one of the top-ranked couples in the United States. Kakani, who was born August 14, 1982, is an all-around athlete who also spends much time achieving her academic goals. She was a three-time recipient of the Presidential Academic Fitness Award (1991-1993) and was on the honor roll throughout high school. Now a full-time student at the University of Washington in Seattle, Kakani is carrying a double major in civil engineering and journalism. She enjoys many sports, reading, and collecting puzzles, and treasures her lime green 1975 Mercury Comet car. Ikaika was born on November 23, 1983. Like his sister, he enjoys golf and other sports. He collects baseball cards and other vintage athlete cards, admires Deion Sanders, and enjoys cheering for the Washington Huskies. Other hobbies include playing pool, fishing, and listening to music. Ikaika is also pursuing a college degree, with a computer science major at Edmonds Community College.

Skaters-Biography.
Skating. Grades 5 and up / Ages 10 and up. Review by Lorraine Douglas. excerpt: These are times for greatness. They are trying times, too, for figure skating is dealing with new scoring systems, new structures and new challenges. But in the midst of turmoil, great skating still shines. And the list of talented skaters sparkles with new names. In each section. the biggest stars, like Evgeny Plushenko, Sasha Cohen, Shen and Zhao, and Bourne and Kraatz, are given several pages for their biographies. Their write ups include personal quotes as well as describing how they started skating and overcame challenges to achieve their dreams. Steve Milton, a sports writer, has a highly readable and energetic style. Sidebars provide vital information like birth dates, coaches, choreographers, etc., and some special tidbits of information are bulleted. There is a complete listing of the stars' standings in recent competitions. There are over 25 individual skaters featured as well as ten pairs teams and 13 ice dance couples. The shorter biographies are often one page in length accompanied with a striking photograph. These artists include the Canadian Jeff Buttle who was runner-up to Plushenko at Skate Canada 2003, a number of talented Chinese skaters like Chengjiang Li, and dancers Grushina and Goncharov.

Skaters-Biography-Juvenile literature. Grades 4 and up / Ages 9 and up.
Review by Irene Gordon.
Not only will Super Skaters be of great interest to avid figure skating fans, but it will also be very useful for school research projects. The book is introduced by a history of figure skating, from the first use of animal bones as skate blades some 4000 years ago, to the use of metal blades in Holland in the 14th Century, to the founding of the first skating club in the world in Scotland around 1650, to the present. As well, there is a description of how skaters prepare their programs, illustrated explanations of how the various jumps are done, a listing of the Olympic gold medalists in the four skating disciplines (men's, women's, pairs and ice dance), and an explanation of how competitions are judged. "As more and more people in Europe and North America discovered the pleasures of skating, they began to skate together on ponds and lakes. The first skating club in the world, the Edinburgh Skating Club in chilly Scotland, came into being around 1650. To join the club, you had to be able to skate in a circle on one foot, then on the other foot, then jump over a pile of three hats. Perhaps these tricky exercises could be considered the first skating competition. "(Page 3)

Together they have formed a promising partnership, and are currently among the top couples on the World scene. A couple of mixed nationality, they exemplify an interesting and enriching style, mingling the classical approach of the Russians with the avant-garde ideas of the French. The following Junior Worlds (1991) which took place in December 1990, Anissina and Averbukh dropped to fourth, whereas Morel and Peizerat claimed the silver medal. After leaving their coach to train with Natalya Linichuk, Marina and Ilya regained their Junior World title in Hull the following season. But despite the promising future, the Soviet team soon split up as Ilya Averbukh left Marina in order to skate with a fellow ice dancer, Irina Lobacheva, with whom he had fallen in love and later married. The two skaters are very different. Gwendal once likened Marina to fire while she likened him to water. "They are two very different characters," describes their coach Murielle. "She is very explosive. He is so calm, more thoughtful. He always knows what he wants to do. Marina is more instinctive and Gwendal more cerebral. She is quick tempered but with a big heart." The relationship between the skaters, coach and choreographer-Yelena Matveeva, who came in the second year of the partnership-is one of give-and take. As the years pass and they understood each other more, the skaters had more input into the program. The couple also have Betty Callaway as a part-time coach who has been giving them advice since the beginning of their career.

Elena Valova was born in 1963. Parents: Alla Borisovna Valova and Aleksander Dmitrievich Valov. Elena began her skating at the small public skating rink near the house where she lived with her parents. Her father even tried to coach her asking Elena to dance to the music going through their window. Teachers and students from her school were very well aware of these endeavors. One day, the principal of the school advised Elena to go to the ice rink on the Plehanov Street, where Tamara Moskvina was auditioning children for the skating school. Elena went there and was accepted to the school in the first attempt. Elena Valova, “I was dreaming about large arenas, prestigious championships and big victories. During my childhood, I loved skating at this small public skating rink by our house and imagined myself inside the real stadium, where the champions skated. For the complete picture, I will say that I even skated to the music that my father would turn on for me, and I listened to my favorite melodies. Later, my grandmother registered me for the children’s skating group, and I began training on a regular basis. I was seven years old.”

The 20 Most Promising Skaters of 2003 By TSB Staff Each season, there is a new crop of names that almost seem to appear without warning onto the radar screen that is the international figure skating scene. Each year this group of youngsters are jumping higher and spinning faster. Each year they are also becoming more talented artistically as they gain exposure to the art of figure skating. This year, TSB is starting a new tradition. We are honoring the skaters whom we feel are just on the verge of international success. The criteria for recognition was simpledemonstrated high levels of skating ability with the promise of further growth in the future. As there are many talented up-and-comers in the world of figure skating, we decided to narrow this list to only include those skaters who have yet to medal in a major senior international competition. This eliminated many names which, although we feel that they have much potential for the future, have already demonstrated that they are capable of results. Without further ado, here is our list of the twenty skaters that you should become more familiar with.. we're sure that you'll be seeing their names in headlines and at the top of podiums in the not-so distant future. The list is presented in alphabetical order.
