  • Born: Birthplace: St. Paul, Minnesota Best Known As: Lovable star of the comic strip Peanuts
The fantastical beagle Snoopy was a star of the long-running newspaper comic strip Peanuts , created by Charles Schulz . Snoopy was the oddball, manic pet of lovable loser Charlie Brown . Originally a minor figure, Snoopy grew to become the strip's best-known character. His quirks were famous: sleeping on top of his doghouse, dressing up and pretending he was a WWI airplane pilot or Foreign Legionnaire, and playing shortstop on Charlie Brown's sandlot baseball team. Snoopy appeared in Peanuts comic strips from 1950 until Schulz's retirement (and death) in February of 2000. While struggling to become a famous writer, Snoopy invariably began stories with "It was a dark and stormy night." The phrase was originally penned by Edward George Bulwer-Lytton in his 1830 story Paul Clifford ... Snoopy inspired another popular catch-phrase, this one created by Schulz: "Happiness is a warm puppy"... Snoopy lent his name to the lunar module for the Apollo 10 space mission, NASA's last test flight before the Apollo 11 landing of

City of Laredo, Texas
Office of the Mayor
Biography Since first being elected mayor in 1998, Elizabeth G. Flores has captured the hearts of the people of Laredo as well as the attention of both state and national leaders. And while she is simply known as Betty to her family, her friends and to the people of Laredo, no concept best describes Mayor Flores better than "service above self." Since taking office, she has set the tone for a Laredo where tradition and culture co-exist with the demands of a 21 st century economy. Through her extensive network in state and federal government both in the United States and Mexico, Mayor Flores has made presentations on the negative effects to cities of the railroad embargo, the lack of transportation infrastructure, border security and federal funding. As former chair of the Texas Border Infrastructure Coalition, Mayor Flores traveled from El Paso to Brownsville to formulate a transportation and work force development border plan that would then be submitted to the state legislature. Mayor Betty Flores works exhaustively with the City Administration and the members of her Council to improve the quality of life, the safety and security of all residents, as well as expand the city's economic development activity and job creation.

Skating. Grades 5 and up / Ages 10 and up. Review by Lorraine Douglas. excerpt: These are times for greatness. They are trying times, too, for figure skating is dealing with new scoring systems, new structures and new challenges. But in the midst of turmoil, great skating still shines. And the list of talented skaters sparkles with new names. In each section. the biggest stars, like Evgeny Plushenko, Sasha Cohen, Shen and Zhao, and Bourne and Kraatz, are given several pages for their biographies. Their write ups include personal quotes as well as describing how they started skating and overcame challenges to achieve their dreams. Steve Milton, a sports writer, has a highly readable and energetic style. Sidebars provide vital information like birth dates, coaches, choreographers, etc., and some special tidbits of information are bulleted. There is a complete listing of the stars' standings in recent competitions. There are over 25 individual skaters featured as well as ten pairs teams and 13 ice dance couples. The shorter biographies are often one page in length accompanied with a striking photograph. These artists include the Canadian Jeff Buttle who was runner-up to Plushenko at Skate Canada 2003, a number of talented Chinese skaters like Chengjiang Li, and dancers Grushina and Goncharov.

David Dore steps down as Skate Canada head
January 31, 2002 - Gloucester, ON ) - After nearly 17 years as the leader of figure skating in Canada, David Dore has announced his retirement as Director General of Skate Canada effective immediately. Dore made the announcement this morning at the association's head office in Ottawa. Marilyn Chidlow, of Ponoka, Alberta, the President of Skate Canada, acknowledged the far reaching contributions Dore has made to skating both in Canada and Internationally. "David Dore's ability to see the big picture in all aspects of skating, from skater development through to staging world championships was tremendous. It was his determination to assist up and coming skaters in every way possible, from financing their skating at the early levels to getting competitive experience as early as possible in their careers that has helped Canada to its current position as a world-class leader in figure skating. His commitment to skating exceeds 100% and didn't just stop in Canada. He has a heart for using what we have learned in Canada, to develop the sport in other countries throughout the world." Dore was appointed Director General in 1985 and under his fiscal and administrative management the organization became a highly recognized and effective model for other Canadian sport governing associations. Dore spearheaded the development of The Skating Events Trust (TSET) which has organized world class skating events and marketing properties, most recently the 2001 World Championships in Vancouver. This championship has been heralded as the most successful figure skating World championship ever.

Home D In all that we do, we seek to paint an authentic and creative picture of God's presence in every aspect of life, causing people to crave a first hand experience with Jesus Christ.
Sitting around a home office known as the "Bat Cave," submersed in a world of superheroes, Daily Planet was born.
Actually, to say the band was "born" is a bit misleading, as Jesse Butterworth, Seth Davis, Danny Lund and Bobby Reinsch have been a band for over five years. Daily Planet just had a problem finding a name that no other band in the world had already claimed. "My younger brother can start a punk band in the garage, put one song on the Internet and he has first rights to that name," jokes Jesse, the band's front man.
Locking themselves in Jesse's home office, Danny (the band's drummer) picked up a Superman comic book, and flipping through its pages, threw out the name of Metropolis' newspaper and Clark Kent's employer, Daily Planet, to his band mates. "It made perfect sense. We've been fans of superheroes our whole lives," says Jesse. "I mean, I named my office the 'Bat Cave.'"
Meeting at Azusa Pacific University (APU) in southern California, Jesse and bass player Seth first thought about starting what is now known as Daily Planet, while in music classes they had together. They wrote a concert favorite, "The Coffee Song," the first time they sat down together. Seth suggested adding Danny on drums, as he knew Danny from their hometown of Santa Rosa, Calif., and the trio played at an open mic night at Azusa in April 1997.
