Back to Tenley Albright, M.D. Biography
Tenley Emma Albright was born in Newton Center, Massachusetts. Her father, Hollis Albright, was a prominent surgeon in Boston. She put on her first pair of skates when she was eight years old and, at nine, began to learn figure skating. At 11, she was suddenly stricken with poliomyelitis and was confined to her bed, unable to walk. As she recovered the use of her legs, she took up skating again and, only four months later, won the Eastern United States Junior Ladies Figure Skating competition. She won her first national Novice title at age 13, the national Junior title the following year and, at age 16, the U.S. women's championship. She won a silver medal at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Norway. The following year, still only 17, Tenley Albright became the first American woman to win the World figure skating championship at Davos, Switzerland. In rapid succession she added the North American title, and a second national championship. After an international exhibition tour, she entered Radcliffe College as a pre-med student, with the intention of following in her father's footsteps as a surgeon. She rose at four each morning to practice before classes, and managed to skate seven hours a day while still attending classes. She successfully defended her U.S title in 1954 and 1955 and won a second World Championship in 1955.

Aaron Burr Jr. (1756-1836)
Information from the Princeton Companion
Quote Aaron Burr Jr. (1756-1836), was thought to be one of the most brilliant students graduated from Princeton in the eighteenth century. Woodrow Wilson said he had `genius enough to have made him immortal, and unschooled passion enough to have made him infamous.'' His father was Princeton's second president; his maternal grandfather, Jonathan Edwards, was Princeton's third president. The younger Aaron Burr was left an orphan when he was two years old, his father and mother (and both maternal grandparents) having died within a year. He did not respond well to the discipline of his austere uncle, Timothy Edwards, several times running away from home and attempting to go to sea. He entered the sophomore class at Princeton at the age of thirteen and graduated with distinction at sixteen in 1772, a year after James Madison and Philip Freneau . He was a member of the Cliosophic Society and for his Commencement Oration chose the prophetic topic `On Castle Building.'' Burr studied theology for a while and then law. After the Revolutionary War, in which he served with distinction as a field officer, he took up the practice of law in New York City and entered politics, serving as a member of the New York state assembly, attorney general of New York, and United States senator. In the presidential election of 1800, he received the same number of electoral votes as

In 1950, Jim Thorpe was named the greatest football player and the greatest male athlete of the first half of the twentieth century, by an Associated Press poll of nearly four-hundred sportswriters. Thorpe excelled not only in collegiate and professional football, but in baseball, track, and a number of other sports. However, his brilliant career as an athlete was punctuated by tragedy and disappointment off the field. Thorpe was born in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) to parents of mixed European and Native American heritage. Glenn S. "Pop" Warner, coach at Pennsylvania's Carlisle Indian Industrial School, where Thorpe became a student at age sixteen, was the first to recognize the young man's natural athletic ability. Though Thorpe primarily concentrated on track and field, he created a sensation on the football field when, as an emergency substitute halfback for Carlisle, he ran two touchdowns in an upset victory over rival University of Pennsylvania.

Hamill, Dorothy Stuart (1956- ), American figure skater, winner of the ladies' figure skating gold medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. With her Olympic win and her professional ice skating career, Hamill gained lasting international popularity. Born in Riverside, Connecticut, Hamill began skating at the age of six. In 1969 she won the national novice title at the United States Figure Skating Championships, and the following year she won the national junior silver medal at the same competition. After training with one of the world's premier jump teachers, Swiss-American Gus Lussi, in Lake Placid, New York, Hamill moved to Colorado to work with Italian coach Carlo Fassi. Fassi guided her to a silver medal in the 1973 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and then to three consecutive victories in the same competition from 1974 to 1976. From 1972 to 1974, Hamill also won international competitions in France, Germany, England, and Czechoslovakia. In 1974 and 1975 she won silver medals in the world championships. One month after her Olympic victory in 1976, she won the world championships in Göteborg, Sweden. After her successes in 1976, one of Hamill's skating spins, dubbed the "Hamill Camel," became her trademark. Hamill's greatest fame came after she turned professional in 1976. She became one of the most popular performers in the United States, starring in numerous touring shows and television specials in subsequent years. In 1993 she bought Ice Capades, a large touring ice show. She was the show's artistic director and its star performer in the productions Cinderella (1993) and Hansel and Gretel (1994). In 1995 Hamill announced her retirement from touring.

Profiles in Time

Walter H. Bainbridge joins the ranks of the perennial vacationers on September 30th when he retires after 34 years in the Survey. When interviewed just prior to his retirement his comment on his Survey career was, "It was all interesting from beginning to end. I never had an assignment that I wanted to leave, and each succeeding one seemed to be better than the last." Discussing his assignments over the years he recalled particularly his tour in the Hawaiian Islands, where he said he was colder than he had ever been, before or since. One of his experiences on this assignment is told below in his own words. "I was on a gravity party with E.J. Brown (now deceased) making gravity observations on top of Mauna Loa at an elevation of about 13,400 feet. The tree line was at about 10,000 feet. There was no wood to burn except the little that had been packed up for cooking. It couldn't be spared for heating. The temperatures ranged from the high 80's in daytime to 5 or 6 Fahrenheit at night. We didn't have enough clothes for that kind of weather. I slept propped up in a lava crack with a tarpaulin draped around my neck forming a tent with me as the center pole. The heat from a miner's candle placed under the bottom edge of the tarp kept me quite warm, although the rock mattress left dents here and there."
