During six miraculous days in June of 1967, Israel captured the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), the eastern segment of Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. In October and November 1966, terrorist activity originating in Syria and Jordan, began to rise. There were also continuous Syrian artillery attacks on kibbutzim (collective settlements) located below the Golan Heights. In April 1967, Israel decided to respond aerially by attacking Syrian emplacements on the Golan Heights. On April 7, there was an air-battle during which Israel downed six Syrian aircraft. Following the April attack, the Israeli government warned that it would be forced to take further action unless terrorism from Syria was ended. The Soviets then passed false intelligence information to the Egyptians, claiming that Israel was massing troops to strike at Syria. Israel denied these claims, and UN ground observers confirmed Israeli claims.
On May 18, Egypt requested that U.N. forces stationed on the Egyptian-Israeli border since the 1956 Sinai Campaign, be withdrawn from the area. UN secretary U Thant complied immediately. The Egyptians then blockaded the Straits of Tiran, thus cutting off Israeli shipping access to the Port of Eilat.

Making Sense of the Six-Day War
A briefing by Michael Oren
May 6, 2002
Michael Oren is a senior fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem. He has served as director of Israel's Department of Inter-Religious Affairs and as advisor to Israel's delegation to the United Nations. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University and has written extensively on Arab-Israeli affairs, notably on the USS Liberty affair. Recently, using newly-declassified documents from Israel, the United States, Russia and the Arab world, he published the critically-acclaimed Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East (Oxford University Press, 2002). He discussed his research with the Middle East Forum on May 6, 2002. A Familiar Scenario
Thirty years ago, just before the 1967 Six Day War, a Palestinian terrorist organization, Fatah , headed by Yasir Arafat, conducted terrorist acts within Israel with the dual purposes of inflicting as much damage as possible on Israeli civilians, and of bringing the Arab world into a war against Israel.
Israel's retaliation against this terrorism triggered violent protests throughout the Arab world. Radical Arab regimes, such as Syria, called for war. More "moderate" Arab states, afraid of confronting Israel's military, stopped short of declaring war. Meanwhile, the Europeans, led by France, condemned Israel's acts of self-defense, and the United Nations condemned Israel's actions almost daily. The United States, for its part, was embroiled in its own war in the East (Vietnam), and was reluctant to become directly involved in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Attack Investigation of USS Liberty
: June 8, 1967
USS Liberty Tragedy USS Liberty Background At 1403 on Thursday, 8 June , the United States electronics intelligence ship Liberty (AGTR-5) was steaming at a leisurely five knots, 14 miles offshore from the Egyptian town of El Arish on the Mediterranean coast of Sinai , when she was attacked by Israeli fighter-bombers. The attack continued for seven minutes, leaving eight of the ship's crew dead or dying, more than 100 wounded, and the ship riddled and burning. Fourteen minutes later, the Liberty was attacked by three Israeli torpedo boats which raked the ship with gunfire - killing another four men - and then launched torpedoes. One torpedo hit a communications compartment, multiplying the Liberty's dead to a total of 34. Within 30 minutes of the torpedo attack, two helicopters carrying armed troops appeared alongside, and two jet fighters loitered in the sky astern as if poised for strikes. As suddenly as it had started, everything stopped. Israel said it was a "mistake." Thus ended the Navy's bloodiest peacetime international incident of the 20th century The Liberty was one of eight merchant-type ships which were modified between and to perform electronic intelligence missions.

5:09 P.M. (Local) PRESIDENT BUSH: Sveiki Draugi. (Applause.) Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for the warm welcome. Madam President, Laura and I thank you for your kind words of introduction, we thank you for your principled leadership, and I thank you for your friendship, and we thank you for the hospitality that you and Dr. Freibergs have shown us. I want to thank the people of the Republic of Latvia for being such gracious hosts for my visit here. And I want to also thank the Prime Minister for joining us, and members of the government. Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister. Laura and I are so pleased to make this second journey to the Baltic States, and our first visit to the great land of Latvia. We're honored, as well, to be in the company of President Ruutel of Estonia, and President Adamkus of Lithuania thank you both for coming. These are good friends to Latvia, and good friends to America. The Baltic countries have seen one of the most dramatic transformations in modern history, from captive nations to NATO allies and EU members in little more than a decade. The Latvian, Estonian, and Lithuanian people showed that the love of liberty is stronger than the will of an empire. And today you're standing for liberty beyond your borders, so that others do not suffer the injustices you have known. The American people admire your moral courage in the cause of freedom.
