Recent events have generated new hope for peace in the Middle East. Among them are Israel's release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners last week, the Palestinian presidential election in January, President Mahmoud Abbas' leadership of moderation, and Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and part of the West Bank this summer. However, such efforts at compromise can be sustained only if the mistakes of the past are studiously avoided.
One such mistake was the Six-Day War in June 1967. I was 11 at the time and experienced it firsthand. The war, a turning point in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict, resulted in Israel's control of East Jerusalem and the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights. Its consequences resonate today.
In 1967, I lived in Jerusalem in the shadow of the no-man's land that separated the Arab neighborhood of Al-Thori and the Israeli Jewish neighborhood of Abu Tor. I saw barbed wire and the "enemy" on the other side. The opposing armies stood eyeball to eyeball, waiting for the tiniest excuse to shoot and kill.

Six days in June 1967 changed the face of the Middle East, and shadows of that time grow longer. This week, on the 35th anniversary of the Six Days War, the Egyptian President and the Israeli Prime Minister both visited Washington, marking the anniversary and drawing different lessons from history to try to convince a reluctant American President to use his weight to enforce their separate visions of peace. The alternative they'll tell you is more war. Both Mubarak and Sharon, along with Palestinian Chairman Yasir Arafat, were there in 1967 and they are there now. Looking back at how the battles of 35 years ago shape the leaders of today and their visions of war and peace. Everybody's unfinished business.

A case study of the applied ethics of war Start: Thursday, June 20, 2002 12:00 PM End: Thursday, June 20, 2002 2:30 PM
In June 1967, Israel and neighboring Arab countries fought a six-day war. Won by Israel, this war had far-reaching consequences for the Middle East and the world down to the present day. Dr. Michael Oren who has served as Director of Israel’s Department of Inter-Religious Affairs in the government of the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and as an advisor to the Israeli delegation to the United Nations, has just published a new and authoritative history of both the war and the events leading up to it, entitled Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East . It is based upon heretofore unavailable or unresearched archives in Israel, the former Soviet Union and the U.S. and interviews with participants in the events of 1967 from Jordan, Egypt, Russia, Israel, and the U.S. By careful research, Oren has managed to reconstruct an accurate account of just how this war came about and resolve many long standing questions: in particular, why a war which all the parties, including their superpower allies, wanted to avoid nonetheless came about. The Six-Day War thus provides an especially interesting case of the application of ethics to war and peace: the tension between justice and interest in the calculations of the parties as well as the impact of political and moral rhetoric as a cause of the war and its outcomes.

Arab-Israeli Wars, Israeli History
Related Category: Israeli History After a period of relative calm, border incidents between Israel and Syria, Egypt, and Jordan increased during the early 1960s, with Palestinian guerrilla groups actively supported by Syria. In May, 1967, President Nasser, his prestige much eroded through his inaction in the face of Israeli raids, requested the withdrawal of UN forces from Egyptian territory, mobilized units in the Sinai, and closed the Gulf of Aqaba to Israel. Israel (which had no UN forces stationed on its territory) responded by mobilizing. The escalation of threats and provocations continued until June 5, 1967, when Israel launched a massive air assault that crippled Arab air capability. With air superiority protecting its ground forces, Israel controlled the Sinai peninsula within three days and then concentrated on the Jordanian frontier, capturing Jerusalem's Old City (subsequently annexed), and on the Syrian border, gaining the strategic Golan Heights. The war, which ended on June 10, is known as the Six-Day War. The Suez Canal was closed by the war, and Israel declared that it would not give up Jerusalem and that it would hold the other captured territories until significant progress had been made in Arab-Israeli relations. The end of active, conventional fighting was followed by frequent artillery duels along the frontiers and by clashes between Israelis and Palestinian guerrillas.

SAUDI-U.S. ALIGNMENT AFTER THE SIX DAY WAR
By John D. Ciorciari This paper examines the effect of the Six-Day War on the U.S.-Saudi relationship, an alliance that has long contributed to the political, economic, and military shape of the Middle East It also considers why these ties did not suffer more dramatically following a bitter conflict in which Washington and Riyadh backed opposite sides. From an American standpoint, why did the alliance remain largely intact despite Riyadh's considerable opposition to U.S. policy and participation in the 1967 oil embargo? For the Saudis, why did the intense indignationat both public and elite levelsat U.S. support for Israel not prompt a break in relations? The answers to these questions are not only of historical interest. Understanding the basic dynamics that drive international alignment is as important today as it was during the height of the Cold War. Unsurprisingly, the Six-Day War brought a great deal of strain upon the Saudi-U.S. alliance. As conflict approached in early June, anti-American sentiment rose to dangerous levels in the Kingdom. On June 2, three bombs exploded near the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Military Training Mission in Riyadh. The influential Saudi Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Ahmad Zaki Yamani, also warned officials of the Arabian-American Oil Company (ARAMCO) that American support for Israel could have grave consequences for U.S. oil business in Saudi Arabia.
