Six Days of War: A Talk With Michael Oren
By AVIYA KUSHNER
The Six-Day War was a shock to the world, and historian Michael Oren has spent twenty years trying to understand how and why the war turned out the way it did. His massive book, Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East makes use of once-secret documents that are finally available to historians, but Oren goes an important step further – he conducted dozens of interviews with Arab, Israeli, Palestinian, American, Soviet, and European personalities. That personal touch is evident on every page of the book, as Oren describes the quirks of the players, and how individual traits – pride, humility, and fear – affected the modern Middle East. In a time when the dispute over territory is the stuff of daily headlines, this serious, hefty work by a fellow at the Shalem Center, a Jerusalem think tank, is all the more significant. Aviya Kushner talked with Michael Oren about the book and the myriad connections between the Six-Day War and the current crisis. Q: How can understanding the details of the Six-Day War help us understand the current conflict in Israel?

Middle East 1967- Six Day War 1967- Six Day War In October and November of 1966, there was a rise in terrorist activity against Israel. These attacks originated in Syria and Jordan. There were also continued Syrian artillery attacks on kibbutzim (collective settlements) in the area below the Golan Heights. In April 1967, Israel decided to respond by attacking, via air, the Syrian emplacements on the Golan Heights. On April 7, there was an air-battle in which Israel shot down six Syrian aircraft. Following the April attack, the Israeli government warned its neighbors that it would be forced to take further action unless terrorism from Syria was terminated. The Soviets then passed false intelligence information to the Egyptians, claiming that Israel was massing troops to strike at Syria. Israel denied these claims, and U.N. ground observers confirmed the Israeli assertions.
On May 18, Egypt requested that U.N. forces stationed on the Egyptian-Israeli border since the 1956 Sinai Campaign, be withdrawn from the area. U.N. Secretary General U Thant complied immediately. The Egyptians then blockaded the Straits of Tiran, effectively cutting off Israeli shipping access to the Port of Eilat.

SIX DAYS OF WAR (5*)
released 17 aug 03 / last mod 28 aug 05 / greg goebel / public domain * Michael Oren's SIX DAYS OF WAR: JUNE 1967 & THE MAKING OF THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST is, as the author explains in his introduction, an attempt to put together a comprehensive and reasonably impartial history of the June 1967 Middle East War, or "Six-Day War". Mr. Oren details the background of the story, in which Jewish settlement of Palestine led to the creation of the state of Israel and a bitter confrontation with the Arabs living in the region, and then describes the tensions that led to the 1967 war, with Arab states competing to see who could be the loudest to denounce the "Zionist entity" (they refused to call it "Israel"). Arab leaders became believers in their own propaganda and refused to see the risks inherent in their actions, taking satisfaction in Israel's increasing fearfulness without seriously considering the possible consequences. Egypt almost pulled the trigger first, but Egyptian President Gamel Nasser hesitated and the Israelis beat the Arabs to the punch. US President Lyndon Johnson and his administration felt that the Israelis would win a shooting match, and this was quickly borne out when it became apparent that the Arab forces were poorly trained, very badly led, and the Arab leaders were almost as hostile to each other as they were to Israel. The result was an Israeli triumph and an Arab disaster.

Peter’s investiture The Six-Day War The Golan was in Syria until June 1967. At the time, there were almost 6,000 Druses dispersed among four villages situated north of the plateau. Circassians and Moslems lived in the village of Kuneitra as well as in a series of small villages. Canons buried underground, camouflaged with eucalyptus trees and protected by trenches, were a constant threat to the peace and security of the Galilee. Under the pretext that the Israeli forces were preparing to attack Syria, the Egyptian president, Gamal abd el-Nasser, closes the Tiran Straits to the Red Sea in May 1967 and demands the withdrawal of the U.N. forces stationed in the Sinai. He mobilizes his army, concludes military agreements with Syria and Jordan and threatens to march into Tel Aviv to obliterate “the Zionist entity” off the map. In all the Arab capitals, there is no doubt of the outcome – Israel will be destroyed.

The Egyptian armistice line remained quiet, and there were few incidents along the Jordanian line until 1965, when Egyptian-sponsored guerrilla raids by Al Fatah first occurred. Beginning in 1960, there were repeated guerrilla activities and shellings of Israeli settlements from the Golan Heights of Syria, but these incidents remained localized until 1964. Underlying tensions, however, did not abate. By the early 1960s, both sides considered a third round of war inevitable. An ominous arms race developed. Egypt and Syria were supplied with Soviet aid and military hardware, and Israel suddenly found European powersthe Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), Britain, and especially Franceto be willing suppliers of modern armaments. Jordan continued to receive arms from Britain and the United States. Tensions mounted in 1964, when, after Israel had nearly completed a massive irrigation project that involved diverting water from the Jordan River into the Negev Desert, Syria began a similar project near the river's headwaters that would have virtually dried the river bed at the Israeli location. Israel launched air and artillery attacks at the Syrian site, and Syria abandoned the project. Guerrilla incursions from Syria and Jordan steadily mounted, as did the intensity of Israeli reprisal raids.

Indian Air Force (Retd) The Six-Day War was actually won by Israel in the first four hours of Monday, June 5, 1967. The day is etched in my memory for being under aerial attack for the one and only time in my life The truth was that the Egyptians wanted the loan of a test pilot and other help in developing the E-300 engine. They also hoped that the costs of developing the engine would get partly offset by India using it for the HF-24 Marut aircraft. Sidky Mahmoud was invited to India and visited Hindustan Aircraft Ltd (HAL) in early 1963. He asked for help in flight testing the HA-300. Eventually I found myself in Egypt in June 63. I flew the HA-300 on its maiden flight on March 7, 1964 at Helwan, just south of Cairo. However, that is a separate story. With more confusion in Indian bureaucratic minds, it was assumed that the Egyptians would give us the E-300 engine, being developed for the HA-300, and take our HF-24 aircraft in a joint development project. But, the Egyptians had no interest in the HF-24. Nevertheless, a modified HF-24 (Mk IBX) aircraft was loaned and later gifted to Egypt. This could take either the original Orpheus 703 engines or the E-300 on one side. To maintain the aircraft, a thirty-man HAL team was sent to Egypt. Most of these people stayed in Egypt for predetermined periods and then new personnel replaced them. However there were two long-term deputations. Wing Commander IM Chopra was loaned to Egypt as the test pilot for development flying of the E-300 engine on the HF-24. Group Captain CS Naik was put in charge of the maintenance team. At the start of the war, along with visitors from HAL, we were thirty-five Indians at Helwan.

Six-Day War As Egypt, Syria and Jordan mobilized their forces in spring 1967 for an evident impending attack, Israel launched a preemptive strike. Starting on June 5, the Israeli air force destroyed Egypt's planes on the ground; then Israeli tank columns and infantry overran the Golan Heights, the West Bank of the Jordan River, including the Old City of Jerusalem, Gaza and the Sinai Peninsula. The war was over by June 10, ended by a U.N.-arranged cease-fire. Egypt and Syria attacked Israel in October 1973 (during Yom Kippur, the Jewish holy day). Israel suffered heavy casualties but managed to repulse the attacks. It even pushed Egyptian forces back across the Suez Canal and occupied its west bank before the belligerents agreed to another cease-fire arranged by the United Nations. In a series of 1974 agreements Israel withdrew its forces back across the canal into Sinai and came to cease-fire terms with Syria. In the Camp David Accords of March 1979, Egypt and Israel finally ended the war between them. Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt, and Egypt recognized Israel's right to exist.

Friday May 30, 1997 Six-Day War memories: 30 years later, revisionists ask how war began DAVID LANDAU
Jewish Telegraphic Agency JERUSALEM Three decades after the Six-Day War and the liberation of Jerusalem, debate still rages here over the conflict's place in Jewish history. Historians have viewed it as a defensive war of salvation. However, some revisionists, citing an old interview with a now-deceased military leader, claim that on at least one front, Israel may have provoked the war. This much everyone who lived through that time remembers: The country's soldiers, poised and straining after three weeks of nervous waiting, leaped into battle on three fronts on June 5, 1967. Egypt had blockaded the Red Sea's Straits of Tiran from Israeli shipping, and along with Jordan and Syria massed more than half a million troops along their borders with the Jewish state. This after months of Arab leaders vowing to destroy Israel. One Arab radio station broadcast to Israelis the sound of machine-gun fire, saying that "the only thing the Zionists understand is this."

Friday June 7, 2002 Israel, too, missed opportunities after Six-Day War Daniel Bloch
We are commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Six-Day War. Though it was our biggest military victory, not only in the history of the state of Israel but in our history since King David's reign, there is no cause for celebration. This great military victory was never translated into a permanent political settlement and it did not bring about a stable formula for peace and security. The events of May-June 1967 found Israel with no coherent policy or ideological approach to meet the new challenges. Until that time Israel followed the lead of its founding father, David Ben-Gurion, who accepted the principle of partitioning the land west of the Jordan River between Israel and Jordan, based on the armistice lines of 1949. After 1967, Israel could not make up its mind as to what it really wanted to do with any of the newly conquered lands. On all three fronts in the south with the Egyptians regarding the Sinai desert, to the east with the Jordanians and Palestinians, or in the north with Syria and Lebanon there was no clear idea on how to proceed diplomatically. Since then only one issue has been fully resolved with Egypt. This was achieved thanks to the vision of Yitzhak Rabin, who started the peace process with Egypt in 1975, and Menachem Begin, who brought it to the final and successful stage of a full peace treaty in 1979.

80. Ira Chernus - Legacy Of Six Day War Still Shapes Jewish Life
Israel s six day war, fought and won 35 years ago this week, marked a sea changein the life Part of the answer lies in the pattern of US Jewish history.
http://spot.colorado.edu/~chernus/NewspaperColumns/Israel/LegacyOfSixDayWar.htm
Ira Chernus
PROFESSOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES
UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO AT BOULDER LEGACY OF SIX DAY WAR STILL SHAPES JEWISH LIFE Israel's Six Day War, fought and won 35 years ago this week, marked a sea change in the life of the U.S. Jewish community. It was the fateful week when concerns about Israel and the Holocaust moved to the center of Jewish concerns in this country. Today, the effects of that change still sow seeds of insecurity in American Jewish life. This insecurity hampers U.S. efforts to serve as an even-handed broker in the Middle East. It is easy to forget that before 1967 Jewish life here did not focus on Israel or the Holocaust. In the early 1960s, the concerns and values of Jews were virtually identical to those of their gentile neighbors. Jews in the United States had gained a level of social acceptance and security never before achieved anywhere else in the Jewish Diaspora. Then came the Six Day War of 1967. Millions of U.S. Jews felt, far more strongly than before, that Israel's fate symbolized their own fate and the fate of Jews all over the world. Virtually all Jews claimed that Israel's very existence was threatened (though some historians now question this claim). It seemed only logical to conclude that Jews in the United States, and around the world, faced another Holocaust. Rather than celebrate its new-found security, American Jewry portrayed itself as an outpost of an eternally endangered and embattled people.
