The Six-Day War and World Jewry American Jewish History March, 2002 by Andrew Furman Edited by Eli Lederhendler. Bethesda: University Press of Maryland, 2000. x + 340 pp. "Some events, when they occur," Eli Lederhendler and the editorial board of The Six-Day War and World Jewry (Haim Avni, Sergio DellaPergola, and Gideon Shimoni) argue, referring to the 1967 Middle East War, "seem to divide history into a `before' and `after' all their own" (p. ix). In the most general sense, the essays collected here seek to test whether this hypothesis obtains for Jewish life in the Diaspora. That is, as the editor, Eli Lederhendler, puts it in his introduction, "Did the Six-Day War, a significant ... Want to read the whole article? You can

Funding for the conference came from both U.S. governmental (the United States Institute for Peace and FSI) and non-governmental sources. The latter included both the pro-Israel Samuel Bronfman Foundation and such advocates of a balanced U.S. Middle East policy as Dr. Timothy Childs and the late Merle Thorpe. Much of the editorial support, including transcription of all proceedings of the three-day conference, was provided by the Middle East Institute (MEI) of Washington DC, a determinedly neutral private foundation.

  • Six days that shook the world An Israeli historian talks about the weeklong war that shaped the modern Middle East and still fuels the Arab-Israeli conflict. By Suzy Hansen As the Middle East crisis becomes more and more desperate, historians and journalists beyond debating what Israelis and Palestinians should do next keep looking to the past to understand what went wrong. Invariably, thinkers on both the right and left end up at Camp David, 2000, when Yasser Arafat rejected Ehud Barak's historic peace plan a plan that included, among other things, returning almost all of the occupied territories to the Palestinians. Michael B. Oren, who was born in the United States, served as director of Israel's Department of Inter-Religious Affairs under the late Yitzhak Rabin and is currently a senior fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem, has written what's being called the most comprehensive chronicle of this crucial turning point in contemporary Middle East history. His book, "Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East," is an elegantly detailed, often riveting account; Oren utilizes formerly top-secret documents to explore the military and diplomatic intricacies of all sides involved Israel, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, the Soviet Union and the United States. Oren has also set out to challenge some fundamental Israeli and Arab ideas about the war, including those put forth by Israeli "new historians" whom Oren suggests are led into bias by their belief that modern Israel "was created in sin."

    Six-Day War: Before the war

From 1948 to 1967, the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, was ruled by Jordan. During this period, the Gaza Strip was under Egyptian military administration. Israeli troops captured Egypt's Sinai peninsula during the 1956 British, French and Israeli military campaign in response to the nationalisation of the Suez Canal. The Israelis subsequently withdrew and were replaced with a UN force. In 1967, Egypt ordered the UN troops out and blocked Israeli shipping routes - adding to already high levels of tension between Israel and its neighbours. Six-Day War: After the war
In a pre-emptive attack on Egypt that drew Syria and Jordan into a regional war in 1967, Israel made massive territorial gains capturing the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Golan Heights and the Sinai Peninsula up to the Suez Canal. The principle of land-for-peace that has formed the basis of Arab-Israeli negotiations is based on Israel giving up land won in the 1967 war in return for peace deals recognising Israeli borders and its right to security. The Sinai Peninsula was returned to Egypt as part of the 1979 peace deal with Israel.

Text Only 1967: Memories of the Arab-Israeli war The second Arab-Israeli war, also known as the six-day war, began when Israel launched a massive pre-emptive strike on three fronts. Israeli forces took land from Syria, Egypt and Jordan, hoping to create a security buffer zone, and thus changed the whole nature of the Middle East conflict. Here is a selection of your memories from that time. The following comments reflect the balance of opinion we have received so far. We covered the subject at school "current events" in Switzerland. I remember being all excited, bringing various newspaper and magazine articles and photos to school. A tiny nation, attacked and out-numbered by numerous other nations, defeating the enemy with the help of God. This was a true miracle!
Albert Ruegg, New Zealand Israel was surrounded and threatened with extinction, and was determined to hold on to a country nine miles wide at its thinnest point. So she fought five nations determined to destroy her - and won miraculously. This was not aggression, but self-defense, and Israel remains predominantly obligated to defend her citizens against Arab suicide-bombers' aggression, even now.

The Durable Legacy of the Six Day War by Ira Chernus Israel's Six Day War, fought and won 35 years ago this week, marked a sea change in the life of the U.S. Jewish community. It was the fateful week when concerns about Israel and the Holocaust moved to the center of Jewish concerns in this country. Today, the effects of that change still sow seeds of insecurity in American Jewish life. This insecurity hampers U.S. efforts to serve as an even-handed broker in the Middle East. It is easy to forget that before 1967 Jewish life here did not focus on Israel or the Holocaust. In the early 1960s, the concerns and values of Jews were virtually identical to those of their gentile neighbors. Jews in the United States had gained a level of social acceptance and security never before achieved anywhere else in the Jewish Diaspora. Then came the Six Day War of 1967. Millions of U.S. Jews felt, far more strongly than before, that Israel's fate symbolized their own fate and the fate of Jews all over the world. Virtually all Jews claimed that Israel's very existence was threatened (though some historians now question this claim).

    Background
The 1956 Suez War was a military defeat, but a political victory, for Egypt . Heavy diplomatic pressure from both the United States and the Soviet Union forced Israel to withdraw its military from the Sinai Peninsula (hence: Sinai) of Egypt which in exchange had agreed to stop sending guerrillas into Israel. As a result the border between Egypt and Israel quieted for a while. At the time no Arab state had recognized Israel. The aftermath of the

Nasser's Speech to National Assembly Members (May 29, 1967) Brothers, when Brother Anwar as-Sadat informed me of your decision to meet me I told him that I myself was prepared to call on you at the National Assembly, but he said you were determined to come. I therefore responded to this and I thank you heartily for your consideration. I was naturally not surprised by the law which Brother Anwar Sadat read because I was notified of it before I came here. However, I wish to thank you very much for your feelings and for the powers given me. I did not ask for such powers because I felt that you and I were as one, that we could co-operate and work for the sublime interest of this country giving a great example of unselfishness and of work for the welfare of all. Thanks be to God, for four years now the National Assembly has been working and has given great examples. We have given great examples in co-operation and unselfishness and in placing before us the sublime and highest objectivethe interest of this nation. I am proud of this resolution and law. I promise you that I will use it only when necessary. I will, however, send all the laws to you. Thank you once again. The great gesture of moral support represented by this law is very valuable to my spirit and heart. I heartily thank you for this feeling and this initiative.

The Six Day War was a brief, six day battle, Israel vs. the three Arab nations The sides were greatly unbalanced, Jordan, Egypt, and Syria on one side, and Israel on the other. The war parallels to the story of David and Goliath, but in 1967 Israel came out on top. Day one, the nations assemble and position themselves for battle. It was Sunday June 4, 1967, a day of work for both the Arabs and Jews. By now Egypt had moved 100,000 soldiers, 1,000 tanks, and 500 heavyweight guns into the Sinai Peninsula. Jordan and Syria had their armies ready to attack at Israel's borders(Six Days In June, William C, Varner http://www.foigm.org/img/sixdays.htm). June 4 put the fear into the hearts of the Israeli people. However day two of the Six Day War was a tremendous victory for the outnumbered Israeli army. It was June 5, 1967 at 8 A.M. when Israel sent out its fighter jets in full force. By noon some 200 Israeli planes had destroyed nearly 25 Arab air bases in E gypt, Syria, Iraq, and Jordan (The Israeli Air Force http://www.israel.org/idf/iaf4.html (c 1997 Israel Defense Forces, Spokesman's Unit, Information Branch)). The first wave of planes destroyed 189 Egyptian planes, and on the second, fourteen Egyptian ba ses were destroyed and 107 more air crafts (The Israeli Air Force http://www.israel.org/idf/iaf4.html (c 1997 Israel Defense Forces, Spokesman's Unit, Information Branch)). Jordan's Air Force was completely devastated. On the ground Israeli tanks had moved into the Sinai Peninsula and were destroying Egypt. Israel held its ground against Jordan who was attacking from the west bank.(The Associated Press

The Six-Day War: The War of the Buffer States by Andrew Herndon Starting on June 5, 1967 Israel launched war against its numerous Arab neighbors in a fight to defend itself from eradication. The Six-Day War of 1967 established Israel as a strong military power that was efficient, well trained, and that was capable of preparing, fighting, and defending its country in a matter of hours. This fact is established through the goals of each participant, the events that provoked the armed conflict, and the actual outcome and consequences presented by the war. There were many events and provocations that lead to the Six-Day War of 1967 35,000 regulars and twelve aircraft (Associated Press 51). Israel recognized the imposing threat and attacked Egypt on the morning of June 5, 1967. Nearly the complete Air Force of Egypt was annihilated, which was about three hundred aircraft. This whole process occurred in a matter of less than 180 minutes (Varner 1). Because Egyptian forces had no Air Force, they were destined for failure. Then, on June 7, Israeli ground forces The majority of the war was fought at this exact location, on the Sinai Peninsula, which covers twenty thousand square miles and serves as a large buffer and neutral zone between Israel and Egypt. The Sinai is mainly made up of desert and rugged mountains, two forms of land nearly impenetrable by military vehicles such as tanks and trucks. The strategic significance of the Sinai was its central location on the Suez Canal and Gulf of Aqaba and its control on Israeli ports (Tessler 399). When the end of the war did come, it resulted from a cease-fire that was established on June 10, 1967 (Bard 7-8). Some sources estimate twenty thousand Arab casualties, the largest of these being associated with Egypt, which lost 11,500 in the military affair. A total of 776 Israeli soldiers were killed in the war (Tessler 397).

Arabs launch a war of annihilation, and wind up humiliated.
On May 15, 1967, Israel's Independence Day, Egyptian troops began moving into the Sinai and massing near the Israeli border. By May 18, Syrian troops were prepared for battle along the Golan Heights. Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser ordered the UN Emergency Force (UNEF), stationed in the Sinai since 1956, to withdraw on May 16. Without bringing the matter to the attention of the General Assembly, as his predecessor had promised, Secretary?General U Thant complied with the demand. After the withdrawal of the UNEF, the Voice of the Arabs proclaimed on May 18, 1967: As of today, there no longer exists an international emergency force to protect Israel. We shall exercise patience no more. We shall not complain any more to the UN about Israel. The sole method we shall apply against Israel is total war, which will result in the extermination of Zionist existence.
