What was the result of the Six Day War?
The Six-Day War ended at 1630 GMT on June 10, 1967 when a cease-fire became effective on the Israel-Syrian front. Israel's casualties amounted to 759 dead and about 3,000 wounded. Arab casualties were never officially tallied, but are believed to be about 15,000. Israel had avoided the threat to its very existence, but also remembered well that there was no peace after the victory in 1948-49. Therefore, Israel was determined to hold the new cease-fire lines until a permanent peace was established. Israel's victory was devastating to the Arab countries, who had expected a quick and easy victory for themselves. Instead they not only failed to achieve their goal of destroying Israel, but on the contrary Israel gained all of Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, Sinai, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank. In the United Nations the Security Council had been inert and ineffectual during the emergency that preceded the war. During the war they became active and met each day of the fighting, attempting to arrange a cease-fire. On June 10, the Soviet Union, embarrassed that its Arab client states lost the war, broke off diplomatic relations with Israel, followed by the Soviet puppet regimes in Bulgaria, Poland, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary. On June 13, the Soviet Union asked that a special emergency session of the General Assembly be convened. The Assembly was addressed on June 19 by Soviet Premier Kosygin, who called for condemnation of Israel, withdrawal of its forces from all areas occupied in the war, and payment of compensation by Israel for damage inflicted on Egypt, Syria and Jordan. His address was answered by Israel's Foreign Minister.

Independence
On 14 May 1948, Israel proclaimed its independence . Less than 24 hours later, the regular armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq invaded the country, forcing Israel to defend the sovereignty it had regained in its ancestral homeland. In what became known as Israel's War of Independence , the newly formed, poorly equipped Israel Defense Forces (IDF) repulsed the invaders in fierce intermittent fighting, which lasted some 15 months and claimed over 6,000 Israeli lives (nearly one percent of the country's Jewish population at the time).
During the first months of 1949, direct negotiations were conducted under UN auspices between Israel and each of the invading countries (except Iraq which refused to negotiate with Israel), resulting in armistice agreements which reflected the situation at the end of the fighting. Accordingly, the coastal plain, Galilee and the entire Negev were within Israel's sovereignty, Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) came under Jordanian rule, the Gaza Strip came under Egyptian administration, and the city of Jerusalem was divided, with Jordan controlling the eastern part, including the Old City, and Israel the western sector.

In December 1946 - at the first post-war Zionist Congress in Basle - David Ben Gurion assumed the defense portfolio, including responsibility for the Haganah , which at the time concentrated on the struggle against the British. Although British restrictions, searches and detentions made the building of a clandestine force - with armor and artillery, air and sea power - well-nigh impossible, Ben-Gurion decided early on that this was the decisive task: to build up a force in preparation for an assault by the regular armies of the Arab countries, which the yishuv would have to face alone, without outside help. He found the Haganah woefully ill prepared for such an eventuality and set about energetically to rectify this. Since import and deployment of heavy weapons were not practicable as long as the British held sway over Palestine, it was decided that manpower should be readied in the country and equipment purchased abroad - to be "married" in time to throw back an Arab assault, if not to prevent it; in time for 15 May 1948, the day envisaged for the termination of the British Mandate and the day after Israel would declare its independence.

In six days in 1967, Israel defeated the combined forces of Egypt, Jordan and Syria, seizing control of the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip from Egypt, of the West Bank from Jordan and of the Golan Heights from Syria. What caused the war and what enabled the Israelis to inflict such a crushing defeat on the Arabs? What lessons did the Arabs and the Israelis learn from the conflict and what lessons should the United States draw from the 1967 war as it seeks to forge a lasting peace in the Middle East today? Joining us today, historian Michael Oren. Oren is a senior fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem. He is the author of the history

Mid-East Realities, 11 June 1997 MER - Most of the lies and distortions about the Six Day War in 1967 when Israel occupied the Golan, West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem, remain today 30 years later. The reality is that Israel encouraged and then took advantage of that war for many political, economic, and territorial reasons. In the following column by Prof. Tanya Reinhart, she puts this into perspective in so far as Israel's attack on Syria and capture of the Golan in the last days of the war. What history still does not properly record are:
  • Israel never was in military danger, the Israeli Army was always aware they could overpowered all the Arab armies. The US CIA was greatly involved in providing Israel intelligence information that greatly helped them win the war in such a short time. US military personnel, disguised as civilians and on secret missions to which they were sworn to secrecy, helped the Israelis with specific technical and intelligence-gathering operations.
There is also a considerable likelihood that in the years following the war the American CIA, cooperating with the Israeli Mossad, targeted Gamal Abdel Nasser, President of Egypt, just as was the case with other

Israel, pushed to the brink by Egypt, declares war.
By Eli Barnavi
In the spring of 1967, Israel was threatened with annihilation, as her Arab neighbors began a series of strategic moves designed to destroy the Jewish state. American Jewry, fearing that they might once again serve as spectators to genocide, displayed unprecedented philanthropic, emotional, and physical support for Israel. Israel, in turn, enacted a swift victory, demonstrating to the world the strength and staying power of the Jewish state. The following article, which details the events of the Six-Day War, is reprinted with permission from A Historical Atlas of the Jewish People published by Schocken Books. In the spring of 1957, the Israel Defense Forces withdrew from the Sinai casus belli. Fatah [the Palestinian group dedicated to obtaining Palestinian independence, founded by Yassir Arafat in 1951]went on sending its men from Jordan to carry out terrorist operations within Israel's borders. Syrian artillery on the Golan Heights frequently shelled settlements in the Upper Galilee State of Israel at the first opportune moment.

In May 1967 Arab armies began assembling long the frontiers with Israel. At the same time General Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt ordered a blockade of the Gulf of Aqaba. General Moshe Dayan , Israel's Minister of Defence, decided on a pre-emptive strike. On 5th June, 1967, the Israeli airforce bombed the airfields in Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Jordan. Egyptian tanks were also destroyed in Sinai and the Israeli army reached the Suez Canal and the west bank of the Jordan river on 7th June. Over the next three days the Israelis captured the Golan Heights and territory in Syria. The Six-Day War reopened the Gulf of Aqaba. It also gave them control over the West Bank of Jordan and the 600,000 Arabs living in that area. Available from Amazon Books (order below)
