41. Black Elk - Native American Near-death Experiences
of the native American medicine man, Black Elk, of the Lakota sioux nation, In this classic of native American literature, Black Elk s neardeath
http://www.near-death.com/elk.html
The Great Spirit Black Elk's near-death experience The near-death experiences of the Native American medicine man, Black Elk , of the Lakota Sioux nation, echo with the enchanting poetic language of an ancient society. His story reveals a traditional natural world culture, yet also many of the familiar phenomena of near-death experiences that leap across eras. Living between 1863 and 1950, Black Elk survived the collision of two eras, when the ancient primal world of his people was shattered by the violent invasion of the new industrial culture. This remarkable medicine man did not even speak English when he told his visionary experience to the author, John Neihardt , who told it in his book, Black Elk Speaks , in 1932. In this classic of Native American literature, Black Elk's near-death experience glows through his perceptions of a sacred natural world. The world of the Lakota Sioux is filled not with soulless material objects out there but with the manifestations of the presence of being that lies behind all creation: Wakan Tanka , the Great Mystery. This spiritual power is not personified as a remote God, but is both transcendent and present in all the world: in thunder, water, blood, birds, buffalo. Since the worldview of industrial society demands the expulsion of these perceptions, they seem like dim archaic memories. But Black Elk's near-death experience was a living, vital way of seeing in a sacred manner.

Rosebud, South Dakota and North Ferrisburgh, Vermont. The Rosebud Sioux Tribal Council and Native Energy today announced the completion of an agreement that will bring critical financial support that will allow the Tribe to proceed with construction on its first large-scale wind turbine, which has been stalled over the past year due to funding uncertainties. Tribal officials see this first turbine as a start of an economic development initiative that will bring a vital industry to the reservation, and they will position this first unit as a "show horse" with an educational mission. William Kindle, President of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe said, "We have spent many years studying our wind resource and planning our first wind turbine installation, and are pleased that the combination of the Tribe's efforts

The White Buffalo
"The White Buffalo Woman" The Sioux are a warrior tribe, and one of their proverbs says, "Woman shall not walk before man. " Yet White Buffalo Woman is the dominant figure of their most important legend. The medicine man Crow Dog explains, "This holy woman brought the sacred buffalo calf pipe to the Sioux. There could be no Indians without it. Before she came, people didn't know how to live. They knew nothing. The Buffalo Woman put her sacred mind into their minds. " At the ritual of the sun dance one woman, usually a mature and universally respected member of the tribe, is given the honor of representing Buffalo Woman. Though she first appeared to the Sioux in human form, White Buffalo Woman was also a buffalothe Indians' brother, who gave its flesh so that the people might live. Albino buffalo were sacred to all Plains tribes; a white buffalo hide was a sacred talisman, a possession beyond price. One summer so long ago that nobody knows how long, the OcetiShakowin, the seven sacred council fires of the Lakota Oyate

This is a talk I did on finding out about the different bands of the Sioux Nation.
The Sioux are used to portray all Native American tribes in Hollywood, anyone wanting to see a "real Indian" wants to see a war bonnet and a tipi. My own son included when he was six told his Grandfather who is 1/2 Cherokee that he wasn't a real Indian because he didn't have what Movie land decrees is a "real" Indian.Must be a difficult burden for them to bare with so much sterotyping involved. Though they have always been noted warriors, the strong sense of family shows a warmth that is not often portrade. The Lakota's that I have meet are a kind, gentle people with their loyalties to their friends and family extremly strong.

Timeline of Events Relevant to the Northern Plains Tribes
Pre-1795 - Trading begun with Spanish and French
merchants from St. Louis.
1804 The Sioux meet the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Post Louisana Purchase - Trading posts established
throughout the West to take advantage of established trade networks. Fur trading becomes an important part of Oglala life. Oglala and other Lakota tribes expand their region of influence and control to cover most of the current regions known as North and South Dakota, westward to the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming and south to the Platte River in Nebraska.
1834 - The Oglala become more centrally organized
with most bands following Bull Bear with many of the rest following Smoke. This was a change from their previous more loosely governed bands with many leaders of comparable influence. The Bear Butte area in western South Dakota, extending west to Devil's Tower was the geographic and spiritual center of their world. other Sioux bands
1849 - The U.S. government purchased Fort Laramie
from the American Fur Company and brought troops in.

Right now I have links to over 150 website locations from about 26 different tribes on this page. I will try to add comprehensive links to an additional one or two tribes each month (moon).

To use this website, scroll down the page to the listing of tribes , use the Quick Index below, or the Searching Tip to see if the tribe you are interested in has been researched for links. If so, it will have a hypertext link after it like this: [ Links ] , that you can click to take you to a page with the complete list of references to that tribe.

ALGONQUIAN
If you are looking for information on the "Algonquian Indians", you can stop right now. "Algonquian" is not the name of a Native tribe or nation; it is a language family, like "romance" or "indo-european". There are no "Algonquian Indians"; but there are some Algonquin Indians in Canada. There are dozens of North American Nations that speak Algonquian languages all across the United States and Canada, but the languages and their speakers are as different from each other as French and Spanish and Italian are.
