Balancing a Busy Life
  • Accept help. When friends and family offer their help, be sure to take it! This can mean having someone play with your child while you run errands, or having someone to call when you need to talk. Take advantage of local resources. Many communities offer play groups, after-school activities and parenting classes. These can give you and your child a chance to have fun, learn and make new friends. You can ask a nurse or social worker in the hospital for some recommendations. Make time for yourself. You need a chance to relax once in a while, too! It can be as simple as taking 15 minutes to look at a magazine when your child is in bed.

Among divorced parents, courts have made single mothers more common than single fathers . The definition of single parents may vary according to local laws of nations or provinces. But in typical cases, a woman may be a single parent after divorce , after giving birth to or adopting a child outside marriage , or after the father has died. A man may be a single parent after the mother has died or after divorce. Sometimes a mother, avoiding parental responsibilities, gives birth to a child and exits the domestic scene, leaving the father to raise the child alone. Some single mothers may have chosen to be so voluntarily through intentionally getting pregnant ,adopting a child or through causing a seperation (divorce if married) from the father. Others may become a single mother due to reasons beyond thier control such as unintentional pregnancy, a seperation initiated by the father or death of the father. Some of these situations can also cause single fathers though as stated these are far less common. Financial problems or other social circumstances often play a role. In some countries (including the US and the UK) teenage single mothers have become a serious social issue (see also

  • A single parent may have the flexibility to spend more time with his or her children without the demands of another adult. Single parents don't have to concern themselves with a spouse's needs or schedule. Single parent families become more interdependent, finding that working together helps solve problems. Because single parents rely heavily on the voluntary cooperation of their children, it is a good idea to involve them with the decision-making and problem-solving processes. Young people tend to feel more needed and valued as contributing members of the household and are more likely to carry out decisions they played a part in making. In single-parent families, each child's help and cooperation is needed on a daily basis. Single parenting presents challenges that often require new skills and further education. Single parents may discover new strengths they didn't know they had as they take on new responsibilities. Single-parent families can provide support to each other. Groups can be a valuable resource for activities, sharing, personal growth and new relationships.

Single Parent Support Groups and Information on the Web

The United States is home to approximately fifteen and a half million single parents, according to the Single Parents Association, and they are on the lookout both for information to improve their lives and for someone who understands their situation: dealing with children, bills, child support, custody hassles, and friends' reactions to their new single status. A multitude of sites on the Internet provide general information from organizations and "been-there, done-that" support from other single parents.

This group is generally acknowledged to be the granddaddy of support groups, mainly catering to divorced men and women when it first began in the late 1950s. Theirs is an attractive, simple site, set up for both browsers that read tables and those that don't, and providing PWP members with a restricted chat group. However, there is a resource center open to all, as well as a directory of local chapters and a search device to help anyone find a chapter nearby. A listing of local and international PWP events helps make it easy for people to find out how they can get involved.

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed The kids are running around the house. The phone is ringing. You are trying to do ten things at once and it just isn't working! You're going crazy. What do you do? Yell for your spouse? Not if you're a single parent. Right now there's no help, no advice and no support. With those odds stacked against a single parent, the result might be "role overload," says Janice Denehy, a retired professor in the University of Iowa College of Nursing. "Energy crises" are an occupational hazard for all parents when dealing with their children. But acting as both mother and father puts undue stress on single parents, Denehy says, and they may eventually "pull back in exhaustion, unable to manage it all." Statistics show there is a growing phenomenon of one-parent families, nearly 90 percent of which are headed by single mothers, she says. As they struggle to provide for their children, single parents may neglect their own needs, Denehy says, and their physical and mental health can slide away. Single parents are often plagued by depression, low self-esteem and, as a by-product of their scrambling to survive, poor health. "The personal needs of your family cannot be met if your own needs aren't being met," Denehy says. Conditions in single parent households can jeopardize elements of the family atmosphere such as love, trust, support, and encouragement, she says. "How can single parents transmit values if they're tired after working all day and the children have been in day care? If parents are struggling and suffering, it will affect the children's attitudes."

At higher risk for mental illness, substance abuse and suicide By Amanda Gardner
HealthScoutNews Reporter FRIDAY, Jan. 24 (HealthScoutNews) Two parents are better than one when it comes to the health of their children, says a new Swedish study. According to a report in the Jan. 25 issue of The Lancet , children who are raised in households with only one parent are more likely to suffer health problems, such as mental illness and suicide risk, than children raised by two parents. Other experts, however, find the study to be overly simplistic, lumping all one-parent households into the same category. "Divorce research stopped considering divorce to be all the same in the early 1970s," says Arnold Stolberg, a professor of psychology and director of doctoral training in clinical child psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. "They're not looking at subtleties within the home: How often did the child have to change schools? Did you lose your peer group? Could you not be on the basketball team anymore?" Single-parent households are becoming an increasingly common feature of modern life. According to background information in the study, in 1999, one-quarter of all Swedish 17-year-olds had experienced their parents' separation.
