Single Parent FAQ Single Parent Newsletters Contact LifeTips If you have questions Ask a Question Now! Today's Featured Single Parent Tips Tip: Reading Time Ritual Scheduling a regular quiet time to read to your child after dinner or before bedtime helps both child and parent relax and enjoy each other’s company. This reading habit creates an intimate and still moment for parent and child to share and provides a good opportunity for bonding. Tip: Reading to Your Child It is never too early to start reading to your child. You can start as soon as your child is born or even before. Even though your child may not grasp the meaning of what they hear, they learn to identify the rhythm and tone of their parent’s voice. Nursery rhymes and songs are especially good reading materials for infants. Tip: Family Dinners Impact Teens According to the National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, family dinners are VERY important. Teen surveys conducted by CASA in 1998, 1999, and 2000, showed that the more often a teen eats dinner with the family, the less likely that teen is to smoke, drink, or use illicit drugs.

Divorcemart "Broken home." This is a derogatory label that causes much pain and misunderstanding. Too often, children living in single parent households have to contend with negative stereotypes and hurtful remarks made by Insensitive adults. Regardless of whether the single parent family exists as a result of divorce or death of the other parent, the child is clearly not responsible for the circumstances. However, it is the child who often pays the price: the child who has to write an essay because a parent cannot afford Back to School night, the child who has to sit on the bench because he/she misses practices while visiting the other parent, the child who comes home crying from school, sad when he doesn't know who to make a Father's Day card for because his father died. As adults - teachers, coaches, neighbors, family, and friends, we can change our attitude, be more sensitive and compassionate, and recognize that SINGLE PARENTS RAISE GOOD KIDS TOO!

Days overflow with responsibility: making ends meet, chauffeuring kids from one activity to the next, maintaining the house. But even in the midst of endless activity, the monotony of life sets in and many single parents question their effectiveness. Feelings of inadequacy and loneliness often surface: Will my child be balanced? Why do I have to be alone? How can I handle everything I have to do? Will my child resent growing up without both parents? These concerns and fears can be paralyzing, preventing moms and dads from being the parent their kids need. Insecurity, loneliness, grief and rejection loom over many single parents. But there is hope and encouragement for those who face parenting alone. On Your Own

BellaOnline's Autism Spectrum Disorders Editor Single parenting two autistic children We are a close knit family, just the three of us. I am a single parent with two boys ages 9 and 10 on the Autism Spectrum . There is no room for negativity - so contact with my family on the East Coast ceased several years ago. The father stopped the court ordered supervised visits a few years ago, but was never a constant in their lives to begin with. I try to make sure they have both male and female teachers, as well as therapists.
Both my children receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to their disability of autism. They each also receive Social Security Benefits off the Father's record. These are two different programs. The SSI is the one that comes on the first, the Social Security comes on the third. I am also the Home Health Care Provider for my younger son through In Home Supportive Services, known as IHSS. In order to qualify for IHSS services you need to be on SSI, have an in-home assessment and get the Pediatrician to fill out some forms. Recordkeeping for all these programs is a job in itself. I will share about these programs in another article.

Frequently asked Questions about Single Parenting 1. Where can I live with my baby?
Look into your housing options before you deliver. Some possibilities include living with a friend or relative, living with your parents or the birth father's parents, living in a group home for single mothers, living in subsidized housing (may have a waiting list), or finding your own apartment. Look for a safe, convenient, and affordable place. If you are a student, ask if your school offers day care most universities and many high schools do. Some pregnancy counselors will help you find a good day care center. 2. Can anyone help me with baby items?
Most pregnancy resource centers and many churches and community agencies are eager to help with needed baby items. Your counselor or pregnancy resource center can also connect you with parenting classes and other resources, including public assistance for medical and financial needs, if necesary.
