Singapore History Museum
Housed in the elegant and historic National Museum building, the Singapore History Museum explores the rich heritage of the people of Singapore. From our ethic and religious diversity, to the struggle for nationhood. The museum traces the trends and developments that have characterised and shaped life in Singapore from as early as the 14th century, right up till modern day. Visitors can enjoy strolling through an early 20th century Peranakan house, fully recreated from its imposing ancestral hall, to the intricately decked-out bridal chamber. Or listen to an audio-tour of delicate 19th century paintings of Southeast Asian flora and fauna commissioned by Major-General William Farquhar. Public programmes such as lectures, workshops and hands-on activities are organised regularly to complement ongoing exhibitions. Look out for announcements in the newspapers!

Here is the timeline for the events that in some way or another changed Singapore's history. 9 Jan Raffles arrived in Singapore with Farquhar to look for a suitable trading port. 6 Feb The treaty was signed between Sultan Hussein, the Temenggong and Raffles and the British flag was hoisted. Raffles realized that the new settlement of Singapore under Farquhar's rule was very disorderly, and he drew up a Town Plan to reorganise it. Raffles founded the Singapore Institution, later renamed the Raffles Institution. Singapore was part of the Straits Settlements under the rule of the East India Company. Industrial Revolution, where there was invention of new machines and Singapore was engaged in the entrepot trade. Opening of gambier plantations by the Chinese. Pepper was also cultivated. Many gambier plantations were closed down due to infertile land, and the plantations were set up in Johor instead. Thomas Dunman, the 1st full-time police chief, improved the police force as well as the pay and working hours of policemen.

History In Brief
Early records of Singapore are vague, though it seems to have been a small seaport during the period when the mighty Sumatran Sri Vijaya Empire ruled the whole region. According to the 16th-century Sejarah Melayu, or 'Malay Annals', Temasek, as it was then known, was a flourishing trading post in the 14th century. However, a contemporary Chinese account describes it as a pirate island. It was briefly ruled by the Sumatran prince Parameswara, but invasions by the Thais and Javanese in the 1390s drove him to flee north to Melaka to found the Malay Sultanate there. Singa Pura remained undeveloped until the arrival of Thomas Stamford Raffles.
Gazing over the Singapore River up which he sailed in January 1819 stands this white marble statue of Thomas Stamford Raffles, the city's visionary founder.

Country Info Singapore Introduction Singapore General Data Singapore Maps Singapore Culture ... Singapore Time and Date Singapore History Back to Top Singaporeans and their leaders immediately accepted the challenge of forging a viable nation on a tiny island with few resources other than the determination and talent of its people. The leaders sought to establish a unique "Singaporean identity" and to strengthen economic and political ties with Malaysia, Indonesia, and the other countries of the region. The government also began to reorient the economy toward more high-technology industries that would enhance the skills of the labor force and attract increased foreign investment. By the 1970s, Singapore was among the world leaders in shipping, air transport, and oil refining. By the mid1980s , the first generation of leaders under Lee Kuan Yew had successfully guided the nation for more than two decades, and a new generation was beginning to take charge.
