An island once known as Temasek held a legend that was to change its name forever. According to a Malay legend, there was once a Sumatran prince that visited this little fishing island. During this visit, he encountered a strange and amazing animal. He later found out that the beast was called a lion. He was encouraged by an omen that stated he would find a city upon sighting the beast. Thus the name Singapura or Lion City was found. "Singa" meaning Lion and "Pura" meaning city. Moving away from the legend, the official arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 claimed that he was the official founder of this wondrous city. What now is a beautiful city that has been transformed into a political and economic country was once a tale of the rise and fall of empires and colonialism. Having a naturally deep harbor and a shelter from disasters, made the island an important asset for trading. Traders near and far came to the "port of call" to exchange goods and set up businesses. This is how Singapore started to prosper.

  • Singapore Countries Live Agent document.write(liveagentname); document.write(liveagentname); document.write(liveagentmessage); Singapore History Singapore was first mentioned in a 3rd Century Chinese account, which described it as "Pu-luo-chung" or island at the end of the peninsula. In the 7th Century, a Malayan Buddhist Empire was established on the island of Sumatra. Temasek (Sea Town) as Singapore was then known, was a prosperous trading outpost of this empire. However, it is said that in the 13th Century, a member of the Royal family, Sang Nila Utama, was searching for a site to build a new city. Arriving at the sandy shores of the island, he mistook a tiger for a lion. Taking this as a good omen, he decided to build his new city here, naming it Singapura, the Sanskrit words for Lion City. Singapore's modern name was thus born.

Since its early beginnings that intertwine fact and folklore, Singapore has been engaged in the pomp of ancient Malay empires, the intrigues of medieval trade, the bartering of European colonial powers and the challenge of nation-building.
Here, we give you an account of the island's remarkable development throughout the centuries.
Legend has it ...

The beginnings of Singapore are steeped in local Malay legend. The island is said to have received its name from a visiting Sumatran prince in the 14th century, who saw a fearsome creature - later identified to him as a lion - on his arrival.
Taking this as a good omen, the prince founded a new city on the spot, changing the name of the island from Temasek to Singapura . In Sanskrit, "singa" means lion and "pura" means city. Thus the Lion City was born, and today the symbol of the merlion - a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish - is a reminder of Singapore's early connections to this legend and the seas.

history as a nation, thereby uniting Singaporeans and educating them, from the time when the museum was set up, which was when Singapore had been a part of the British Straits Settlements. Shortly after its establishment, the museum was recognised for its collection, which comprised of a natural history collection from South East Asia, and various other collections. Before coming under the name we all know today, the museum was called the Raffles Library and Museum, and it was only later when the museum and library separate did the museum have a name of its own, the Raffles Museum. The museum was unaffected by the war, as a scientist there was on good terms with General Yamashita, the head of the Japanese forces invading Singapore during World War II, and this was important for the safety of the great collection housed within the museum. Originally meant to serve the British staff in Singapore, the museum was renamed the National Museum after the independence of Singapore, thus it represented the important role which the museum played in the history of Singapore.

In the third century, a Chinese account gave reference to Singapore as Pu-luo-chung, or "island at the end of a peninsula". In 1320, however, the Mongol court sent a mission to a place called Long Yamen (Dragon's Tooth Strait) to get elephants. This probably referred to Keppel Harbour. A visitor from China, Wang Dayuan, who came around 1330, called the main settlement Pancur (spring), and reported that there were Chinese already living here. One of the earliest references to Singapore as Temasek, or Sea Town, was found in the Javanese Nagarakretagama' of 1365. The name was also mentioned in a Vietnamese source at around the same time. By the end of the 14th century, the Sanskrit name, Singapura (Lion City), became commonly used. At that time, Singapore was caught in the struggles between Siam (now Thailand) and the Java-based Majapahit Empire for control over the Malay Peninsula. According to the Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals), Singapore was defeated in one Majapahit attack, but Iskandar Shah, or Parameswara, a prince of Palembang, later killed the local chieftain and installed himself as the island's new ruler. Shortly after, he was driven out, either by the Siamese or by the Javanese forces of the Majapahit Empire. He fled north to Muar in the Malay Peninsula, where he founded the Malacca Sultanate. Singapore remained an important part of the Malacca Sultanate; it was the fief of the admirals (laksamanas), including the famous Hang Tuah.

About Singapore
This page covers a brief introduction of Singapore history, independence and economic growth in the last century.
Recommended book and source: Singapore 1994
Brief History Founding of Modern Singapore The British, who were extending their dominion in India, and whose trade with China in the second half of the 18th century was expanding, saw the need for a port of call in this region to refit, revitalise and protect their merchant fleet, as well as to forestall any advance by the Dutch in the East Indies. As a result, they established trading posts in Penang (1786) and Singapore (1819), and captured Malacca from the Dutch (1795). In late l818, Lord Hastings, Governor-General of India, gave tacit approval to Sir Stamford Raffles, Lieutenant-Governor of Bencoolen, to establish a trading station at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. On 29 January 1819, Raffles landed on the island of Singapore after having surveyed other nearby islands. The next day, he concluded a preliminary treaty with Temenggong Abdu'r Rahman to set up a trading post here. On 6 February 1819, a formal treaty was concluded with Sultan Hussein of Johor and the Temenggong, the de jure and defacto rulers of Singapore respectively.

About Singapore
We will introduce you all you need to know about Singapore. Our history, facts, climate and location, culture and language.
There is so much you can learn about Singapore. We hope this interesting read will help you know more about this exciting island city.
Introduction Singapore is both an island and a country, but perhaps its best description is that of city-state. Like the great city-states of the past, it offers civilization and order in the highest degree. Its combination of Western-style development and Eastern-style calm seems to present the best of both hemispheres: It's a modern metropolis where you feel safe walking the streets, and it's an Asian business center that's a model of efficiency. Singapore is also a multicultural city, and close to one-quarter of its population are expatriates or foreign workers from all over the world. Known for its desire to become the technology hub of Asia, Singapore is the most wired country in the region. Singapore shares another trait with historical city-states: Its authorities strongly believe that they can safeguard the status quo with regulations against almost anything and everything that - in their view - could possibly upset the sense of tranquility. In reality, visitors will find the place is not as restrictive as the long lists of hefty fines for such things as littering and jaywalking suggest. Some visitors to Singapore leave singing the praises of a society that "works," while others feel the government's near-compulsive fixation on cleanliness and order makes Singapore sterile in every sense of the word.

The parliament is unicameral; executive power nominally rests with the President, but is effectively wielded by the Prime Minister and the Cabinet: the presidency is a largely ceremonial post whose incumbent is elected by parliament to serve a six-year term.
