Theater and the Politics of Culture in Contemporary Singapore
Peterson, William Explores the vibrant relationships between theatre, cultural politics and social attitudes in a country whose history has many lessons for Western scholars. While the politics of Singapore continue to receive a larger share of media attention than the country's small size might seem to justify, very little has been written which attempts to link the government's cultural policies with any artistic practice. As a country that is increasingly being held up as a developmental model for other Asian nations, Singapore's relationship with its arts and culture demands scrutiny. Using Singapore's vibrant, English-language theatre as a lens, William Peterson examines the cultural implications of the much-celebrated Singapore model of political, economic and social development.
The author begins by providing a framework for the understanding of the government's role in creating arts policy. Peterson then explores the "discourse of crisis" in Singaporean political spheres and its effects on the theatre, Singaporean attempts to "find" and stage culture and nationhood, festivals in Singapore, Singapore's lively, indigenous musical theatre scene, and themes of interculturalism, gender, and sexual orientation in Singaporean theatre.
"Fascinating. Peterson makes a convincing argument for the benefits of studying such a culture by reminding us that Singapore has been seen in both regional and international terms as a model country whose politico-cultural history may have many lessons for Western scholars. The book explores the relationships between theatre, cultural politics and social attitudes in ways that are increasingly recognized as crucial to contemporary theatre studies." Helen Gilbert, Department of English, University of Queensland

The Islamic Calendar, which is based purely on lunar cycles, was first introduced in 638 C.E. by the close companion of the Prophet (PBUH) and the second Caliph, `Umar ibn Al-KHaTTab (592-644 C.E.) RAA. He did it in an attempt to rationalize the various, at times conflicting, dating systems used during his time. `Umar consulted with his advisors on the starting date of the new Muslim chronology. It was finally agreed that the most appropriate reference point for the Islamic calendar was the Hijrah. The actual starting date for the Calendar was chosen (on the basis of purely lunar years, counting backwards) to be the first day of the first month (1 MuHarram) of the year of the Hijrah. The Islamic (Hijri) calendar (with dates that fall within the Muslim Era) is usually abbreviated A.H. in Western languages from the latinized Anno Hegirae, "in the year of the Hegira".

April 2001
Ziauddin Sardar arrives in Singapore to find it’s been occupied
I T has been my misfortune to arrive in various places around the world only to be engulfed in local crisis. I am no stranger to war, rumours of war, coups d'etat and various natural disasters. But never before had I stepped off a plane to be confronted with cultural homicide. Changi Airport is globalization run riot, an impersonal consumerist cornucopia of designer labels. It is also dedicated to being the world's premier transport hub. From here you can go anywhere, ushered along by the ubiquitous Singapore Girl. Whenever I arrive in the building, I leave as rapidly as possible, hoping for a talkative ride into Singapore city centre, courtesy of a local taxi driver. And that is how the full scale of the culture crisis overwhelmed me. I was spared the usual inquisition that introduces conversation- where are you from, how's the economy there, how long are you staying, what do you think of Singapore. Enough to say I was down from Kuala Lumpur for the weekend to invoke a deluge of angst. 'Ah, no need sorry for my Singlish lah . You boleh Singlish, ah? Very bad, ah. Prime Minister say Singlish cannot, ah. So now what

    LOCAL ARTS SCENE

The development of institutions and infrastructure has put in place much "hardware" for the development of the culture and the arts, so now it is necessary to give more focus to the "software" aspect. The Ministry of Information and the Arts (MITA) has developed a vision for Singapore to be a renaissance city and Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong has promised to set aside more funds for the Arts. MITA has to aims: firstly to establish Singapore as a global hub for flourishing of the arts, to position Singapore as a key city in Asia and as one of the cultural centres in the world. And secondly, to provide cultural ballast in the nation-building efforts. In order to develop the arts and cultural scene, MITA has developed two approaches. That is to nurture a pool of people with the appreciation of the arts and a keen sense of aesthetic. Furthermore, more efforts will be made to attract, develop and support both local and overseas talent. This includes the support of arts making and investment programs that will contribute to the creative scene in Singapore.
