Home A Cosmopolitan, Multicultural Land Singapore's multicultural society of just over four million is reflected in its major ethnic groups: the Chinese (76.8%) Malays (13.9%) Indians (7.9%) and Eurasians and smaller minority groups (1.4%) . Despite rapid industrialisation, the majority of Singaporeans celebrate the major festivals associated with their respective religions. The variety of religions is a direct reflection of the diversity of races living here. Singapore's principal religions are Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity. The majority of Chinese Singaporeans follow Buddhism, although Daoism (Taoism), and more recently Christianity, are also popular. Malay Singaporeans are predominantly Muslim, while more than half the Indian Singaporeans profess Hinduism.

ne of the first people to register with the Corporate Governance NETwork , Jin Liu, Liu.Jin@anu.edu.au , is doing a comparative study of Australia and Singapore. The Seven Cultures of Capitalism by Charles Hampden-Turner and Alfonss Trompenaars (H-TT) offers insights to comparative corporate governance. The book is based on a questionnaire administered to 15,000 managers from around the world by the Center for International Business Studies in Amstelveen, The Netherlands. At the risk taking H-TT's work out of context and of alienating both the Chinese and English sides of my family, I offer a few of their findings that might be of interest to Jin Liu and others interested in cultural differences in corporate governance. Singapore's culture seems to favor long term working relations; managers from Singapore responding to the survey are almost 3 times more likely than Australians to assume a long term commitment to the company they work for. They have a cultural affinity for the cooperative approach of Deming's quality circles and Joe Scanlon's self-managed groups. Australia is more typical of English-speaking cultures which tend to idolize the individual entrepreneur such as T. Boone Pickens, Lord Hanso and Rupert Murdoch. (p. 60) Achievement/Ascription based on Age. Australians were more like to confer status by achievement; Singaprorians by age. H-TT argue that "a company, knowing it must pay more as its employees age, will make sure that they mature in all possible ways, as well and grow more valuable to their company in that process. To fail to invest continuously in their upgrading would be disastrous." (p. 91) "The system of mutually reinforcing ascription and achievement seems to work best." (p. 93)

Tay (1996) 41 McGill L.J. 743 Culture haunts the search for a system of human rights that can truly be universal. Today, when we value cultural diversity, religious and regional factors have increasingly emerged as reasons for differences in human rights. In Asia, the main proponents for this cultural argument are governments representing polyglot, largely multi-ethnic, modern capitalist societies. Singaporean representatives, dubbed “the Singapore school”, have been prominent among them. These proponents say that Asian views and practices of human rights necessarily differ from those in the West because Asian culture differs. But how can this claim to culture be mediated with other human rights? Beyond the rhetoric of the Singapore school, a survey of Singapore’s actual record shows no gross human-rights transgressions. Instead, there has been a reinforcing cycle between socio-economic and civil and political rights to create a core of human rights. The Singapore example may stand as a minimum standard for other developing nations. (1996) 41 R.D. McGill 743

The Paranakan Culture in Singapore By Philip Yim
Bride and groom during tea ceremony. An economic marvel, commercial hub of Southeast Asia, efficient and corruption-free government and number one airport in the world; these are usually the images that appears to the minds of frequent travelers in Singapore. Lesser known are the unique ethnic cultures that form the major ingredients of what the entire Singaporean experience is all about. The Malays, Chinese and Indians collectively make up the social and cultural pillars of Singapore. These are by no means cultures of anonymity and so much is already known that it does not warrant saying more. I intend to introduce to you the Peranakan culture, a truly unique and colorful culture that has never ceased to fascinate but is sadly fast losing foothold in the country to modernization and assimilation with other mainstream cultures. The Peranakan culture is essentially a cultural blend of mainly Chinese, Malay and some European descent, very often bearing the best of each. The Peranakan community evolved some two to three hundred years ago when Chinese traders established trade ties with the locals from the Malay Peninsula, including Singapore. Cross-cultural relationships and marriages were natural by-products when these traders married local Malay women. Peranakan, which means, "locally born" in the Malay language, was to be the name of subsequent generations of Chinese-Malays. To Westerners, they are commonly known as "Straits-born Chinese".

Singapore is a melting pot of four distinct cultures - Chinese, Malay, Indian and European. Although the Singaporean government has actively promoted a distinct Singaporean identity, and most residents think of themselves as Singaporean, rather than Chinese or Malay or Indian, the rich heritage of various cultural influences still remains evident in all facets of life. Although at first glance, Singapore's cityscape presents an urban uniformity, the traces of the racially segregated areas designated by Sir Stamford Raffles - Chinatown, Arab Street and Little India are still distinguishable by the cultural characteristic of their races. Singapore's colonial heritage is also evident in the architecture in many areas of the city. English is the common language that binds the various ethic groups together - while Mandarin, Malay and Tamil are also national languages. All children are taught English, and have to also master their mother tongue in schools. The main religions are Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity. The major festivals of each ethnic group are celebrated in its own traditional manner.
