How to Lessen The Impact
  • Before leaving home, familiarise yourself with the new culture you'll soon be living in. Read books, talk to people who have been there, explore this website. Find out about the living conditions of local people, the political situation, the currency, climate and what the cuisine is like. Pick up a phrase book and start practicing counting and simple greetings. Familiarise yourself with the phases of culture shock. This knowledge is like a forecast of rough weather ahead. You'll still have to weather the storm but you'll be better equipped to cope well. If at all possible take the opportunity of a "Look, See" visit to your new country. Not only will you get a taste for the real estate and other facilities you may need, but you'll experience first hand the cultural contrasts you face.

Why Culture Shock occurs Our personal identity is framed by the community we live in. Part of the way we see ourselves is in relation to other people, as belonging to this or that group. Your personal identity becomes somewhat threatened when your familiar community is replaced by foreign landscapes, people and lifestyles. People respond with varying degrees of anxiety and confusion. This is what is referred to as Culture Shock.
In your home community people interact according to quite precise social rules. When you meet a new person you make eye contact, smile and shake their right hand. If you blow your nose you'll use a tissue or handkerchief. These acceptable ways of behaving have been taught to you since infancy. And if the rules are broken there are known consequences. You also know how to make amends and have confidence that these compensating behaviours will work in regaining social acceptability.
The thing to remember is that the appropriate behaviour can be learned. You will learn by observing and asking questions of locals as well as other expats. It may be hard at first to evaluate how well you are adapting but gradually your confidence will build.

Best of Singapore Culture l Religion Culture The pattern of Singapore stems from the inherent cultural diversity of the island. The immigrants of the past have given the place a mixture of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European influences, all of which have intermingled. Behind the facade of a modern city, these ethnic races are still evident. The areas for the different races, which were designated to them by Sir Stamford Raffles, still remain although the bulk of Singaporeans do think of themselves as Singaporeans, regardless of race or culture. Each still bears its own unique character. The old streets of Chinatown can still be seen; the Muslim characteristics are still conspicuous in Arab Street; and Little India along Serangoon Road still has its distinct ambience. Furthermore, there are marks of the British colonial influence in the Neo-Classical buildings all around the city. Each racial group has its own distinctive religion and there are colorful festivals of special significance all year round. Although the festivals are special to certain races, it is nonetheless enjoyed by all.

Tokyo residents get taste of Singapore's culture and cuisine
By Channel NewsAsia's Japan Bureau Chief Michiyo Ishida TOKYO : Tokyo residents had a rare opportunity recently to experience Singapore culture and cuisine in the heart of the Japanese capital. It was an afternoon of songs, games and goodies organised by a Japanese woman who grew up in Singapore. A Chinese-style lion dance, a traditional game known as cha-tek, and a taste of Singaporean English, or Singlish this afternoon of Singapore culture was a chance for Japanese to learn more about the island. Many Japanese know the Merlion or about the Night Safari but not many are aware of Singapore’s cultural mix.

History of Singapore - culture and background country
History
Singapore was first mentioned in a 3rd Century Chinese account, which described it as "Pu-luo-chung", or island at the end of the peninsula. In the 7th Century, a Malayan Buddhist Empire was established on the island of Sumatra. Temasek (Sea Town) as Singapore was then known, was a prosperous trading outpost of this empire. However, it is said that in the 13th Century, a member of the Royal family, Sang Nila Utama, was searching for a site to build a new city. Arriving at the sandy shores of the island, he mistook a tiger for a lion. Taking this as a good omen, he decided to build his new city here, naming it Singapura, the Sanskrit words for Lion City. Singapore's modern name was thus born. During World War II in 1942, the security was rudely shattered when the Japanese invaded North Malaya and advanced towards Singapore. The British administration in Singapore surrendered on February 8, 1942. Under the Japanese ruling, Singapore was renamed Syonan (light of the South), and the commerce died down.
