Students are offered a compelling look at the principles and practice of some of the world's major religions. The seven modules include:
  • Exploring Religion Hinduism Confucianism Taoism Buddhism Shinto Religious Pluralism
Revealing Eastern Religions includes seven modules (corresponding to textbook chapters) that cover the religions most often taught in introductory eastern religions coursesHinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Shintoalong with modules on the academic study of religion and on religious pluralism in the 21st century. The text is designed to convey the maximum amount of information in the most user-friendly manner, and to reinforce learning with interactive exercises and a large bank of review questions. Compared to other introductory texts, Revealing Eastern Religions is vastly more experiential. Through use of digital technology, evocative images of the religions presented are available at the rate of one for roughly every seventy words of text, a ratio that print textbooks cannot begin to match. Links to scripturessome available online and others on the CD-ROM itselflessen the need for adjunct texts such as anthologies of primary readings. Finally, an extensive, and easily searchable glossary and bibliography provide additional resources for students, including the proper pronunciation of key terms in the study of the world's religions. The narration provided is a tremendous asset for students with learning differences and for those whose native language is not English.

We might note here that the Eastern religions described here all originated in India, and that Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism were offshoots of Hinduism. Among the Western faiths, Judaism, Christianity and Islam all share a common root in Abraham, and in recent times the term Abrahamic has been coined to denote these three world religions. Naturally there are important exceptions to the views expressed (for example, Buddhism does not believe in a Personal God). Nevertheless these broad generalities are useful, as they give a scholarly window into the East and the West. Description
This fascinating volume provides a concise, illustrated introduction to five of the great religious traditions of the worldBuddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Shinto. Buddhism, one of the world's great religious traditions, attracts millions of modern-day followers. Hinduism, one of the most ancient of all belief systems, is increasingly well known in the West through expatriate Indian communities. Taoism has been an important influence on Western thinking, especially through the impact of the Tao Te Ching . Confucianism, less metaphysical in its principles, emphasizes family values and the role of the individual within the state. And Shinto, distinctively Japanese in character, is the most animistic of the great religions, based on a belief in numerous individual spirits. The contributors explore a great variety of topics within these religions, including: the life of the Buddha;

Perceived Rates of Violence Associated with Religion
Core Problem: Who's god is God?
We are violent;
that is why we don't ban guns.
- Kris Rosenberg -

Terror in the Name of God by Jessica Stern is a must read by anyone who cares about the future of humanity. Any scholar of terrorism will find new information from the terrorists themselves. Ms Stern provides deep insights into why Judaism, Christianity and Islam spawn so much violence. Ms Stern is not an armchair pundit; she traveled extensively to interview terrorists herself. By her own admission, she became a new person from the experience. Her findings are at once sobering, persuasive of the problem and encouraging with understanding of a problem can come control. Some excerpts follow:
"Writing this book has helped me to understand that religion is a kind of technology. It is terribly seductive in its ability to soothe and explain, but it is also dangerous. Convents such as the one I visited as a child may make good people better, but they don't necessarily make bad people good. They may even make bad people worse."
In discussing Elaine Pagels' "The Origins of Satan," Stern goes on:

S-U of Faith
By Veronica Wall As we near the end of our A-Z, we take a look at Sikhism, the youngest of the world's great faiths, the Chinese philosophy of Taoism and, finally, Unitarianism. Keep reading to find out more and click on the audio links to listen to the interviews. SIKHISM Sikh Temple Sikhism is the youngest of the great world faiths and was founded in the 15th Century. Its origins can be traced back to the Punjab district of what is now known as India and Pakistan. Guru Nanak began teaching a faith that was quite different from Hinduism and Islam. Nine Gurus followed Nanak and developed the Sikh faith and community over the next centuries. Sikhs believe the way to lead a good life is to keep God in heart and mind at all times, live honestly, work hard, treat everyone equally, be generous to the less fortunate and serve others. They worship only one God and do not use statues or images to help them. Prayer can be conducted at any time and in any place, however, specific prayers should be recited at specific times of the day and the official place of worship is called a Gurdwara. The morning is treated with the utmost importance within Sikh communities and a stern code of conduct is laid out for the start of the day.

HINDUISM Hinduism may be defined as a set of religions that positively relate to several mythological figures (Krishna, Rama), some metaphysical ideas and practices (reincarnation, karma, yoga), two writings (the Vedas and Upanishads), and a people's history (India). That definition seems to describe Hindus while distinguishing them from other religious groupings, particularly the Jains and Sikhs. The early history of Hinduism is relatively vague and unknown. Aspects of Hinduism that are most familiar in the West focus on a desire to flee an often harsh existence. Reincarnation is the belief that a person goes through a series of lives, being reborn as a human, animal, etc. The goal of life is to escape that process by becoming perfect. A supporting idea is karma the just consequences of a person’s present or past deeds. What is done in one life carries over to the next, for good or ill. Escape from karma is by absorption in the world-soul, Brahman. Usually that is sought by the practice of yoga, leading to union with Brahman. There are several forms including the use of posture to lead to physical harmony. There are four paths to God in yoga: love, knowledge, work, or meditation. Different types of persons will find one or the other more appropriate.

PHILOSOPHY PHIL 101. Introduction to Philosophy
Many issues that we deal with in daily life are ultimately philosophical issues. Philosophy is defined as "love of wisdom." This course will lead students to explore some fundamental philosophical questions. These questions include: What is reality? What is knowledge? How do we know anything? What is the good? What is truth? What is beauty? What is the foundation of human morality? Is morality absolute or culture-relative? Does God exist? What is happiness? What is a person?, etc. Logical reasoning and argumentation will be strongly emphasized. Students will have opportunities to look into these issues and develop their own coherent views. No prior knowledge of philosophy is required. (Three credits.) PHIL 201. Critical Thinking: Introduction to Logic
A study of fundamental distinctions required for effective reasoning such as definition, truth, validity, deduction, induction, and fallacies. Application of procedures for testing the validity of arguments in concrete situations. (Three credits.) PHIL 207G. Ethics: Philosophical and Religious

Over twenty million Sikhs follow a revealed, distinct, and unique religion born five centuries ago in the Punjab region of northern India. Between 1469 and 1708, ten Gurus preached a simple message of truth, devotion to God, and universal equality. Often mistaken as a combination of Hinduism and Islam, the Sikh religion can be characterized as a completely independent faith.

Six Popular 'Religions'
Basic Judaism
Judaism is the oldest of the world's four great monotheistic religions. It's also the smallest, with only about 12 million followers around the world.
The Holocaust of the 1930s and and 40s transformed Jewish demographics-if the Holocaust had not occurred there would now be between 25 and 35 million Jews in the world, and far more of them would live in Europe.
Most Jewish people in the world live in Israel or the USA. The largest European Jewish community is in France.
There are 285,000 Jews living in the UK. Only 85,000 of them are active in their faith, but virtually all the others still regard being Jewish as a vital part of their identity.
Judaism does not seek converts. Those who convert to Judaism must undertake the observance of Torah (Jewish Law), including, if they are men, circumcision.
Basic Islam Islam is the world's second most followed religion.
It began in its present form 1400 years ago in Arabia, but swiftly become a world faith, and now has around 1,200 million adherents.
"Islam" is an Arabic word which means surrendering oneself to the will of God, and achieving peace and security by doing so.
