AN INTRODUCTION TO EASTERN RELIGIONS AND THE LAND OF EASTERN RELEGIONS - BIHAR
There exists a land on both sides of the river Ganges in India which occupies the same place for people believing in Eastern Religions as does Jerusalem and the neighbouring areas for the people belonging to Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Great philosophers, sages, kings, and the knowers of Truth lived here. The word `Bihar' is a distortion of the word `Vihar' from Sanskrit, which means, ( a ) wander, and ( b ) a Buddhist monastery. Both these meanings are appropriate because ( a ) Lord Mahavira and many other Jain Tirthankars, and also Lord Buddha, wandered around in this land, and ( b ) It had numerous Buddhist monasteries and was the Centre of Buddhism . The messages these people left for the rest of the world took forms of different Eastern Religions called Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. The scriptures that millions and millions of people read contain the same Truth but, because of the various limitations of different people, the same Truth appears differently to them. This land is called Bihar which is one of the states of India. Hinduism as it is known these days, was known as the Sanatana Dharma which actually means that this religion has always existed

PREFACE
Religion has had a very important role to play in human lives. Today, it is being used in both the constructive and destructive ways. The examples of the first one are the food and other kinds of aid, opening of medical centres, shelters for destitutes, orphans, and many other humanitarian works which cannot be even enumerated. On the other hand, the killings in Northern Ireland, Yugoslavia, Armenia, Middle East, Pakistan and India are also going on, in the name of religion. It is a very sensitive issue in the western countries, as much as it is in the eastern countries because the separation of the church and the state took place, not too far back in the history of Europe. The dominant role of religion in the under developed countries is well known. The presentation here, is my understanding of various religions and I do not claim any credit for anything new here. These religions have existed for thousands and thousands of years and have been discussed in many books on these religions. The readers will find after reading this book that these are the human actions and thinking which are the determining factors in our peaceful existence and not, whether there is God or not. The Truth lies in our identification with everything around us. Finally, I would like to thank Ms. Yvonne Raymond for typing the manuscript.

An overview of Sikhism Sikh Origins No consensus exists on the origins of this religion. Historians and specialists in Eastern religions generally believe that Sikhism is a syncretistic religion, a combination of Hinduism and Islam, with independent beliefs and practices added. Fundamentalist Sikhs disagree; they believe that their religion is a direct revealed from God - a religion that was not derived from either of these two religions. Sikhism does contain many unique postulates and principles that are different from both Hinduism and Islam. Joseph D. Cunningham (1812-1851), the author of "A History of the Sikhs" (1848), observed: "It has been usual to regard the Sikhs as essentially
Hindu... yet in religious faith and worldly aspiration, they are wholly different from other Indians, and they are bound together by an objective
unknown elsewhere." Sikh History The name of the religion means learner. It is often mispronounced 'seek' It should be pronounced 'se-ikh', with the final 'kh' sound like the 'kh' in Mikhail Gorbachev. Its founder was Guru Nanak, (1469-1538) who was born in the Punjab area of what is now Pakistan. At Sultanpur, he received a vision to preach the way to enlightenment and God. He is responsible for the saying "There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim" which has since become one of the pillars of Sikhism. Guru Nanak and Panth (his followers) later built the first Sikh temple at Katarpur.

Please feel free to come visit. bsang@catawba.edu Course Summary, Goals, and Means of Assessment There is no longer justification for ignorance of the world's major religious traditions. World-wide physical and electronic mobility have made next-door neighbors of Buddhists, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Confucians, and the like. The West has conducted business for centuries with non-Judeo-Christian traditions, and the fact of religious pluralism in America is now almost a commonplace. Therefore, a better understanding of these major religious traditions is necessary if only to help us better understand the people around us. However, there might be even more compelling reasons for understanding these traditions. Religion, as the search for and response to that which is experienced as Sacred, is a search for ultimate meaning; it is about what is fundamentally important to humans. The major religious traditions represent the most influential patterns in humanity's quest for meaning.

Combating the Myth of Sikhism as a Derivative Religion
The scientific fact about Sikhism is that it is neither a syncretism, an amalgam and intellectual extraction from other religions and creeds nor a sect of Hinduism or Islam as has been variously asserted from time to time by numerous authorities. It is an autonomous, independent religion, complete and whole, with its validity inhering in its own revelations and proclamations such as are repeatedly made in the Sikh Scripture, its pious literature and its historical movement. - Sirdar Kapur Singh, An Incomparable Prophet: Guru Amar Dass

"This research examines the major religions of India, notably Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Zoroastrianism. The research will discuss major features of the religions, including historical background, key concepts, rituals, and relevance to social organization in India, as well as the distribution of population and elements of religious diversity in countries where Indian religions are found. Religion, with the Hindu religion predominant, emerges as the decisive element in all areas of Indian history and contemporary society. To see why Hindu culture predominates in India, claiming some 700 million adherents and accounting for 80% of Indians' religion ("Hinduism"), it is important to know that its history goes back to about 1500 BCE. It was in that period that the highly developed agricultural civilization in the .."

Religious Studies 100 (001): Religions of the World Welcome to this course on Religions of the World. You will be introduced to nine major religions this year: five from the east; three from the west; one with origins in both. At the same time you will learn a few basic methods in the study of religions. The course makes use of a number of resources. There will be lectures for each religion on the agenda. Some of the lectures will deal with original historical context and some basic themes and developments; other lectures will focus on a key text within that religious tradition. Occasionally these lectures will be supplemented with a few illustrations from Art History, guest speakers from specific religious communities, and selections from films. Unfortunately due to the tight schedule, we are unable to spend the same amount of time to each religion. Each student will take part in a Discussion Group which will meet on most Fridays during the two terms. Each student has been assigned to a group. Some meet at 12:00; some meet at 1:00. These groups will be led by the Teaching Assistants. Each student must read the assigned material before the seminar and be prepared to discuss themes in those texts and in the lectures.
