important to them and what it means in their daily lives. Sher Singh is a 38-year-old Canadian lawyer and a Sikh.
Sikhism is different from other Eastern religions. In Sikhism there is an injunction against celibacy and renunciation. You can’t leave the world and join a monastery, or as Hinduism suggests, go into the forest and meditate. The married and domestic life is central to being Sikh. You must live in the family setting, you must face the rigours of life and rise above them, not run away from them. Also, there are no brokers between man and God in Sikhism. Hindus say ‘the Brahmins are the only ones who can lead you to God’. But Sikhs believe anybody has direct access to God. In my life I try to follow the three main principles of Sikhism. The first is Nam Japna, which means worship of God. Meditation on the name of God must be done during your regular duties, when you are at work and at play. It says the ideal state is when you can remember God all the time. The second is Kirat Kami.

FROM THE 2001 CENSUS

Overview:
Statistics Canada reported the following data on individual faith groups in their 1991 and 2001 census. Membership include adults and children, and is self-reported. There are major problems with this method of counting: Some individuals identify themselves with a particular religion, even though they have never been to a religious service in years. Some are reluctant to reveal their religious affiliation to a census taker or pollster who might be a neighbor. Some religious groups are widely hated by some Canadians. Examples include Wicca , other Neopagan faiths Satanism , and Atheism According to Statistics Canada anyone who says they are of a certain faith is counted as being from that faith. But many people use other definitions. Many conservative Protestants, for example, do not regard Jehovah's Witnesses Mormons , Spiritualists, etc. as Christian. Some major non-Christian shifts over the decade: Canada is becoming increasingly secular, as more people no longer associate with any organized religion.

    60. DEFINING A SIKH AND KEEPING UNIVERSAL NATURE OF SIKHISM
combine the philosophy of whole world Christianity in the west and all theeastern religions. That is why we can call sikhism a UNIVERSAL religion.
    http://acsagurdwara.org/defsikh.html
DEFINING A SIKH IN THE SPIRIT OF UNIVERSAL NATURE OF SIKH RELIGION Dr Sukhraj S Dhillon, PhD There is an excellent dialogue among sikhs all over the world to define a sikh. The recent focus is the 1925 definition of a sikh and its endorsement among various groups. The discussion is about the definition of a Sikh as a " person who believe in the Guru Granth Sahib, believe in the Ten Gurus, and have no other religion." The 1925 definition of a sikh in the spirit of universal nature of Sikh religion is an excellent effort, and I admire the endorsees of 1925 definition. However, we cannot ignore the Amrit and Khalsa aspect of Sikhism without clarification. The greatest contribution of the last living 10th Guru NanakGuru Gobind Singhis the creation of Khalsa , the family of pure ones, to which a Sikh may belong through receiving baptism ( Amrit ). Therefore, every khalsa is a Sikh but every Sikh is not a khalsa unless he/she receives baptism. Although Guru Gobind Singh offered the highest honor to Khalsa, he did not expect every Sikh to become khalsa. One of his most favorite poets Bhai Nand Lal and more than half of his other poets, for example, did not become khalsa. Therefore, Dashmesh Pita 10th Guru Nanak should have no objection to the definition of a sikh we are endorsing. This is a good lesson to avoid making it a controversial issue. (Going back to rahitnamas etc doesn't help. As many of us know that rahitnamas written by Chaupa Singh, Bhai Nand Lal, Desa Singh..... are not in agreement with each other.)
