Sikh Origins: No consensus exists on the origins of this religion. Historians and specialists in Eastern religions generally believe that Sikhism is a syncretistic religion, originally related to the Bhakti movement within Hinduism and the Sufi branch of Islam , to which many independent beliefs and practices were added. Some Sikhs believe that their religion is a re-purification of Hinduism; they view Sikhism as part of the Hindu religious tradition. Many Sikhs disagree; they believe that their religion is a direct revelation from God - a religion that was not derived from either Hinduism or Islam. Sikhism does contain many unique postulates and principles that are quite different from both Hinduism and Islam. Joseph D. Cunningham (1812-1851), the author of "A History of the Sikhs" (1848), observed: "It has been usual to regard the Sikhs as essentially Hindu... yet in religious faith and worldly aspiration, they are wholly different from other Indians, and they are bound together by an objective unknown elsewhere."
Sikh History:
The name of the religion means learner . It is often mispronounced 'seek' It should be pronounced 'se-ikh', with the final 'kh' sound like the 'kh' in Mi

By simply logging on to this site, you have joined our congregation. Feel free to explore the many "rooms" and levels of FECHA, dedicated to the recognition and celebration of the power of focused electrons thru the ages. Does FECHA seek converts? Hardly. We don't wish to turn you away from your religious beliefs or traditions. We see all religions as part of human history; all churches as temporal extensions of their founders' particular visions of a power greater than themselves. We hope that you will come to accept, and participate in, this exciting electronic connection. No matter which religion we embrace, we are all made of electrons. That is our linkage. That is our heritage. That is our destiny. That is our Church: FECHA. Catholicism T Hinduism A Islam I slam has 840 million followers around the world. It was founded by the prophet Mohammed, who received the holy scriptures of Islam, the Koran, from Allah (God) c. A.D. 610. Islam (Arabic for "submission to God") maintains that Mohammed is the last in a long line of holy prophets, preceded by Adam, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. In addition to being devoted to the Koran, followers of Islam (Muslims) are devoted to the worship of Allah through the Five Pillars: the Statement: "There is no god but God, and Mohammed is his prophet;" Prayer, conducted five times a day while facing Mecca; the giving of alms; the keeping of the fast of Ramadan during the ninth month of the Muslim year; and the making of a pilgrimage at least once to Mecca, if possible. The two main divisions of Islam are the Sunni and the Shiite. The Wahabis are the most important Sunni sect, while the Shiite sects include the Assassins, the Druses, and the Fatimids, among countless others.

    Founded in the 15th century by Guru Nanak (1469-1539 in northern India, in the Punjab... he tried to unite Hindus and Muslims. "Sikh" means "disciple", and they are the disciples of 10 gurus (religious teachers, little less than God).
    - Guru Nanak started his revelations saying, "there is no Hindu and no Musulman (Muslim), and the path I shall follow is God's"...
    - Like the "Muslims", he revealed God as the only One, the Truth, the Creator, immortal, and omnipresent... and forbade images in the temples, only the Book "Adi Granth" is the object of ceremonial reverence in the temples and the only repository of spiritual authority... because God never incarnated into a human being.
    - Like the "Hindus", he believes in Reincarnation, the Law of Karma, celebrates the same Hindu festivals, but strongly opposes the caste system, and no Hindu gods. - There are 19 million Sikhs, 300,000 of them in the United States... well recognized by their long-coiled "turban" and the heavy beard . In India many of them are taxi drivers, with a fierce appearance, like a dangerous person, but all that I had treated were most friendly and good drivers. This turban is symbol of the unity of the brotherhood.

    Sikhism is a relatively recent and monotheistic religion of India. Little more than 500 years old, Sikhs now number between 16 - 20 million worldwide. Most still live in the Punjab area of Northwest India, where the faith began but Sikhs can be found right here in America. The hallmark of this faith is its stress on social equality, including the equality of women along with simple, honest living and devotion to the one God of all humanity. return to top Created by Laura Ellen Shulman home Last updated: April 05, 2004

    UNIVERSAL MESSAGE OF SIKHISM by Dr. Sukhraj Singh Dhillon, Ph.D. When we look at Guru Nanak's philosophySikhism belongs to every human being and it carries a universal message in the true sense ( sarbat da bhala ). However, most of the Sikh Gurdwara's are ignoring the spiritual nature of our founding Guru's message in Gurbani. In most of the places, we Sikhs are spending time fighting, for example, over physical appearanceeither forcing our views on others and cursing them or defending ourselves from those who are forcing their views. I meet Amritdhari Sikhs and those who are Non-Amritdhari. Most of us will agree that there will always be Amritdhari and Non-Amritdhari Sikhs and both can either sit together in Gurdwaras or divide our community into separate Gurdwaras. It's only the understanding of Gurbani and message that can practically improve our everyday living, and can keep us together within our own community and with the rest of the world. Just two lines of Gurbani can change our attitude: DOolu Drmu dieAw kw pUqu] sMqoKu Qwip riKAw ijin sUiq] "Dhaul dharam daya (compassion) ka putu;
