From Jeremy Wilkinson and Berna Marthinussen. In English.

CSL
Chinese Sign Language
Modern Chinese Sign Language has developed mostly since the late 1950's. Similar to all sign languages and languages in general, CSL has several dialects, of which Shanghai is the most prominent. Aspects of the sign language relate to Chinese character signs. The first deaf school using Chinese Sign Language was created by the American missionary C.R. Mills and his wife in 1887, but even so American Sign Language did not influence CSL. Schools and workshops or farms for the deaf are channels that serve to spread and disseminate CSL in China. Others who are disconnected from these gathering places tend to use home sign languages that no one else can understand. The Chinese National Association of the Deaf, R.O.C. was created by deaf in the US and overseas. The main purpose of the domestic deaf in China was to raise quality of living for the deaf which was behind the quality of living standards provided for the blind and other disabled. The members worked together to better welfare of the deaf, to encourage education of deaf and sign language, and to promote the deaf community. ign Language interpreters are gaining popularity in theatres from Broadway to Boise. With the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act, along with increased sensitivity to Sign Language and the Deaf community, theatre producers and venues throughout the country find themselves exploring the opportunity to reach out to a new audience via interpreted performances. Unfortunately, interpreters who are experienced in performance interpreting are few and far between. In addition, most production staff have a limited understanding of the variety of issues associated with the provision of quality interpreted performance. It is hoped that this Web site will serve as a resource for both novice and experienced interpreters, as well as for theatre staff wanting to learn about sign language interpreted performance. For the Interpreter and For the Theatre are good places to start.
Getting ready for a performance of your own? Fill out our form , and we'll make sure to include it in our list of interpreted performances. Better yet, send us a photo, and we'll be happy to feature you on the site.

107. American Sign Language Program||University Of Rochester
American sign language Undergraduate program from the University of Rochester in New York.
http://www.asl.rochester.edu/
American Sign Language (ASL) is the native language for many deaf Americans, particularly those who are congenitally and profoundly deaf. It is a central vehicle for communication among deaf people, and is therefore also a binding force in their culture. Not only is it a full natural language, it is also at the core of a new literary tradition, both in poetry and theater. ASL is not a derivative of English, and its study raises many important scientific questions about the true universals of language as well as their developmental and neurological origins. This fact is reflected in the increasing linguistic and psychological research on ASL, the establishment of a number of ASL programs around the country, and the frequency with which conferences in this field are being held. While many ASL courses exist in the United States, very few have the instructional depth found at the University of Rochester. Furthermore, few of these programs are at major universities or approach the study of signed languages as part of the Liberal Arts, analogous to the study of spoken languages. The University of Rochester's ASL Program is a modern language, literature and culture program, and also approaches the study of signed languages from a linguistic and scientific perspective. Because the city of Rochester has a large deaf population, students have a unique opportunity to learn and use ASL outside the classroom. Students in the more advanced ASL courses regularly attend theatrical events and lectures in ASL at local schools and colleges.
