    1. I am interested in taking Chinese language classes. How do I know which class is right for me? Every student must take a placement test before taking Chinese language classes. See FAQs about Chinese placement test
    2. If I cannot get into the language class I want, can I take a higher level for now and take a lower level later?
No. This is called “back-tracking” and violates university policy. For example, if you have taken CHN 3BL and then take CHN 2BL in a subsequent quarter, the lower class result would become invalid. Similarly, you cannot take CHN 120 (advanced Chinese) and then take 111, 112, or 113 (third-year Chinese) later. However, CHN 130, 131, 132, 140, 160, and literature courses can be taken out of sequence.

Department of Applied Linguistics, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University Lublin, Poland jarek.krajka@wp.pl Introduction Looking back at the history of foreign language teaching, one can notice that there are few issues that have raised as much controversy as the use of L1 in the classroom. Within the Grammar Translation Method, the mother tongue played an extremely prominent role, and very often students learned about the target language in the source language, with translation being the most important language learning activity. On the other hand, the Direct Method almost forbade the use of L1, as the teacher's job was to immerse students in the target language, to use L2 in all situations, obviously, facilitating comprehension with gestures, demonstrations or visuals. Other language learning methods of the past and the present can be situated somewhere between these two extremes, shifting the focus from Teacher Talking Time (usually in the target language) to Student Talking Time (not only in the target language, but also in the mother tongue).

Gdañsk, Poland indexkd@axel.com.pl Authors Publisher Oxford University Press, 2000 pp. 70 ISBN 0-19-437226-X Overview Internet English. WWW-based communication activities is a conversation course for pre-intermediate and intermediate students. It teaches real-life English utilising the Internet When using this coursebook students develop not only their language skills but also computer abilities. By being engaged in basic computer operations learners are getting more and more motivated and creative. Through Internet English students develop basic information technology (IT) skills such as word processing, Web-browsing, e-mailing or typing. But, what is more important, the course gives learners the opportunity to manage their own learning. They are offered some guidance from the teacher and then are left on their own to direct their learning to the resources they are interested in. The course contains two main components: the student book and the teacher’s book, as well as an accompanying website.

Homework Help: Social Studies: World Issues: Conflicts in the Middle East
by Tyler Stigmier Are Middle Eastern Conflicts Turning Into A World War? Suicide Bombers in Israel have become such a problem that Ariel Sharon has ordered that the military begin a campaign against Yassir Arafat and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). Israel has been very successful on many attempts to corner Yassir Arafat in order to force discussion about suicide bombers. When the Israeli troops had Arafat cornered in Ramallah on the West Bank, talks began about what Arafat would do about the suicide bombers, and how Israel would respond if the bombings stopped or slowed. Israel has been demanding that the suicide bombers be stopped and Yassir Arafat continues to deny the accusation that Palestinian suicide bombers are directly linked to his command of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. Another situation that could lead to worldly conflicts is the fact that Ariel Sharon is losing the majority of the political support in the Israeli Parliament. Since there are multiple political parties in Israel, and not one or two dominant parties, major parties do not get enough votes to get a Prime Minister in power. In order to elect a Prime Minister a political party must get fifty percent of all votes or more. With so many parties the larger platforms must merge with smaller political parties to get someone elected. Since Ariel Sharon has started to lose power due to his order that Israeli troops should stop pursuing Yassir Arafat, electing a new Prime Minister will be very difficult for his country.

February, 1999 SUCCESS FOR ALL One of the most widely used of all whole-school reform models is Success for All, a model that focuses on reading, writing, and language arts in the elementary grades. Success for All provides well-structured curriculum materials and instructional strategies for prekindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1-6 reading, writing, and language arts, one-to-one tutoring for primary-grades children struggling in reading, and extensive family support services. Begun in 1987, Success for All is currently used in more than 1100 elementary schools, and will be in more than 1700 schools by September, 1999. Most of these are high-poverty, Title I schoolwide projects in cities and rural areas throughout the U.S. In longitudinal studies conducted in 15 school districts, involving thousands of students, students in Success for All schools have consistently performed better than those in matched control schools on measures of reading performance, writing, language arts, special education placements, promotions, and other variables (see Slavin et al., 1996, for a summary of evaluations). Most of these evaluations were carried out by researchers other than the developers.

You can get a Thawte personal ID for free, while a Verisign ID will cost you $15 unless you go for the trial option and then cancel in time. You may use either for this assignment. The Verisign digital ID requires a credit card transaction, which gives them a mechanism to verify your name. A Verisign digital ID will say "Issued To: your name", while a free Thawte digital ID will say only "Issued To: Thawte Freemail Member" not terribly descriptive, but good enough for us. The gospel tracts probably turned a lot of people off; my apologetics was often simplistic or even plain wrong! What is the internet? It all started in the 1960s. The U.S. Defence Department wanted a communications system which could survive a nuclear holocaust. Then the academic community used it to transmit and access information. For a while it stayed that way - bureaucrats and technocrats and academics swapping ideas and software. Time Magazine, Christianity Today, this Renewal Journal Newsgroups And on the lighter side... In the process of defining all of the components of the book, I choose the typeface, the style, and location of illustrations and photographs, and how each page flows from one to the next. My ultimate task is to bring the author and reader together one-on-one. When did you first become interested in designing books? In the mid-70s, while working as a production manager for a small Illinois publishing company, we changed from doing our books in-house and started hiring book-building professionals. I was responsible for hiring designers and typesetters for our books. Since this process was new to us and electronic typesetting was in its infancy, I learned the hard way from some very talented bookbuilders. The more I learned about the art of typography and book design, the more I wanted to learn. As a child, did you make your own books or magazines?
