Biography
Tony Binns graduated from the University of Sheffield with BA (Hons) in Geography and Diploma in Education (with Distinction). After a period of school teaching in South Yorkshire, he then graduated from the University of Birmingham with MA and PhD in Geography and African Studies. He was appointed at Sussex in 1975 as Research Fellow in Economic Geography, and in 1976 as Lecturer in Geography in the School of African and Asian Studies. Tony is currently Reader in Geography. He is also Convenor of the MA programme in Rural Development and was Director of MA Programmes (1997-2000) in the Graduate Research Centre for Culture, Development and Environment. He has held Visiting Lectureships at Bayero University, Nigeria (1984), Wiwatersrand University, South Africa (1993) and Rhodes University, South Africa (1996 and 1998). He spent the 2000-2001 academic year at Rhodes University, South Africa on a Leverhulme Study Abroad Fellowship. Among his appointments outside the University of Sussex, Tony was Honorary Secretary of The Geographical Association (1985-89), its first elected President (1994-95), Honorary Vice-President (1997-2002) and Chair of the Association's International Committee (1999-present). He was also Chair of the Institute of British Geographers, Higher Education Study Group (1988-93). Since 1995, he has been a Director and Council member of Worldaware, a development education organisation, and a member of the Editorial Board of the

Email Feedback Sierra Le·one (l n n A country of western Africa on the Atlantic coast. Inhabited by the Temne when the Portuguese first visited the coast in 1460, the region was later settled by Mande-speaking peoples from present-day Liberia. In 1792 freed slaves were brought from Nova Scotia to found the colony of Freetown, which was transferred to British administration in 1808. The region became a British protectorate in 1896 and achieved independence in 1961. Sierra Leone became a republic in 1971. Freetown is the capital and the largest city. Population: 5,730,000.
